Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (85-87)

The 2021 Bourgogne Rouge is light and airy on the nose, brambly red fruit with light sous-bois scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, brittle in texture, attenuating towards the finish with a sapid aftertaste.

(aged in 100% new Francois Freres barrels): Deep red-ruby color. Cool, high-pitched aromas of blackberry, redcurrant, orange zest, licorice, pepper and cardamom. Large-scaled but primary and light on its feet; silky in texture but a bit hardened today by the CO2. Shows intriguing citrus peel notes: is it the excess gas or the cool site? Finishes firmly tannic, with a sexy spice character. Tricky to taste today: I would not be surprised if the finished wine rated a score at the top end of my projected range.

Rich and explosive to the core, Groffier's 2011 Chambertin Clos de Bèze hits the palate with huge dark blue/purplish fruit, violets, menthol and cloves. Even with all of the intensity, power and voluptuousness, my preference is to drink the Groffier Burgundies sooner rather than later. The inclusion of 50% whole clusters adds complexity and dimension. This is an especially bold, fruit-driven Bèze, but it all works.

Vinous (93-96)

(70% vendange entier; 100% new oak; these 80-year-old vines produced 37 hectoliters per hectare in 2013): Bright, dark red. Lovely pepper-and-spice lift to the aromas of red cherry, rose petal and licorice. Sappy and dense, with a captivating light touch and a compelling sweet/savory balance to the red fruit and licorice flavors. The very long finish features noble tannins and a building spiciness. A bit hard to taste today owing to a high level of carbon dioxide but looks to be brilliant.

The 2014 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is slightly deeper in colour than the Bonnes-Mares. It has a splendid bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, sous-bois and black truffle that blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine structure, good backbone here with a slightly savory, dried blood-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. There is just a hint of salted liquorish that pops up on the aftertaste. Excellent. Tasted at the Domaine.

Vinous (96-98)

The 2019 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is all about one-hundreds: age of vine, percentage of new oak and whole bunches. It has an incredibly intense and powerful bouquet with layers of blackberry, sage, sous-bois and charcoal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and sufficient fruit to easily soak up the new wood. Fresh and quite citrus-like, it is beautifully proportioned on the finish with a lingering hint of pepperiness on the aftertaste. This is an outstanding Clos-de-Bèze, though it will require several years in bottle.

Vinous (94-96)

Raised entirely in new oak with all its stems, the 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a tough job following the crystalline Les Amoureuses. Almost opaque at first, this whole bunch imparts a strong pepperiness, with a light charcoal scent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, taut and fresh with a slightly chalky textured, sorbet-fresh finish. Afford this 5-8 years in bottle.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97-99)

(5-Star Wine) 100% of both new wood and whole bunch vinification. The Clos de Bèze sits in its own tank apart from the rest of the wines. Must be a bit of a snob I suppose. A solid central core of purple, an imperial robe. Just a soupçon of oak on the nose but obviously the fruit is far more evident. There is indeed an immense weight of dark fruit on the nose, with the whole bunch pepper and spice woven throughout. Excellent weight and density. Rich red roses, along with a sensual dark raspberry, sensuality and structure beautifully interwoven. Drink from 2032-2045+.

100% new wood. Solid bright purple, and on the chunky side. Massive, almost inky, a very dark fruit, the 2023 Clos de Bèze does not quite blossom on the palate as it has in some recent years. Despite the ripeness of the fruit, this feels a little introverted today, or perhaps a bit subdued behind its oak. Drink from 2033-2042. Tasted Nov 2024.

Bright dark red. Captivating nose offers redcurrant, raspberry, iron, tobacco, minerals and coffee. Lush, silky and sweet; youthfully reticent in the mouth but already offers an ineffably complex perfume. Boasts impressively fine, late-arriving tannins for the vintage. The wine's firm acid/tannin spine gives the finish excellent bite. A beauty.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)

Good medium red. Highly perfumed but youthfully reticent nose suggests flowers, licorice, pepper, crushed rock and brown spices. Sweet, seamless and utterly primary, with terrific intensity to the dark berry and spice flavors. But this extremely backward wine will need a decade of aging. Finishes with dusty tannins and vibrant, lingering notes of ginger and lavender.

Wine Advocate (93)

Robert Groffier’s 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses was tasted blind in a line-up of 2011 Amoureuses in Holland. It has a deep ruby color, but the nose is far more backward than the first two wines, a little more herbaceous and tertiary (perhaps with some more stem addition?) but still well-defined. But it is certainly less flamboyant than Drouhin and Lucien le Moine’s Amoureuses ’11, though returning on my second run-through, the wine unfurls supremely well and gains intensity. The palate is very intense and very fresh, very citric with good tension, although it does not quite have the complexity that the aromatics suggest. Reticent and masculine, this needs 4-5 years in bottle. Tasted June 2014.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses has a composed bouquet with good fruit intensity, blueberry and wild strawberry, neatly integrated oak, a real presence. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, tightly wound at the moment but with precision and a brisk acidic line that keeps everything very focused. Give this 4-5 years in the cellar at least. Tasted September 2016.

Dense dark purple, rich fruit, there is a touch of something tough on the nose. This is very powerful wine, with a heady dense dark red fruit, then some floral notes. The wood returns behind. Surprisingly inaccessible in some ways but potentially very fine. The backwardness of the bouquet disappears with time in the glass.

Vinous (94)

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is showing quite a lot of reduction on the nose, which is quite savory at first, with hints of dried blood infusing the black and blue fruit. The focused, well-balanced palate is full of energy, delivering very fine, supple tannin and a perfectly pitched line of acidity. It doesn’t quite deliver the complexity one would expect, although the finish is undoubtedly refined and persistent. Good potential, but it needs five years in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
