Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (90-92)The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru comes across tightly wound on the nose and requires coaxing, very flinty and with light bell pepper notes. You would almost think there is a touch of Sauvignon Blanc in the blend (there isn’t of course.) The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, though it does not quite deliver the verve or the comeliness of the preceeding Vergers and feels straightlaced on the finish. Maybe it has something up its sleeve for later? |

Vinous (91-93)The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers 1er Cru needs some coaxing from the glass, eventually revealing lemon sherbet and orange zest aromas, just a touch of marzipan in the background. The palate is clean and precise, the new oak is neatly integrated with a harmonious and poised finish with blood orange notes on the aftertaste. One of my picks from the domaine this year. |

Vinous (96)The 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has a kaleidoscopic nose with mineral-rich yellow fruit, chalk and apple blossom, cohering marvelously with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced, quite powerful with real weight and density. Plenty of extract towards the finish. There is just the right amount of bitterness to keep this edgy. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92)The 2021 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has a glorious, expressive and intense nose with crushed limestone, petrichor and citrus aromas that burst from the glass with razor-sharp delineation. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry, perhaps more lime-driven than I would have liked, especially after the arresting aromatics. Fine weight and length with some reduction, though quite peppery and persistent. It just loses a bit of composure in the final furlongs. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. |

Vinous (92-94)Bright deep ruby. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, crushed black cherry, cassis, violet and black pepper complicated by pungent stony minerality. Juicy, penetrating wine with terrific energy and intensity to its flavors of dark berries, crushed stone, espresso, bitter chocolate and iodiney minerality. The wine's firm tannins saturate the front teeth without coming off as hard. Really stimulates the taste buds on the very long finish. I like this! The pH here is 3.36, or a bit lower than the rest of these 2016s. Superb for this bottling, and built for a long life in the cellar. |

Vinous (92-94)Medium ruby, less saturated than the Damodes. Totally different on the nose, offering complex scents of wilder berries, dark cherry, licorice, garrigue and spices, plus a complicating soil element. Less black fruit and floral in character than the more primary Damodes but very sexy right now, conveying a silky texture and noteworthy volume to its fruit, spice and savory mineral flavors. This wine is typically more difficult to taste early than the Damodes but with its impression of high pH (actually 3.54), this '16 should offer relatively early pleasure. |
