A markedly floral nose is quite pretty with its array of earth, liqueur-like dark berries and lovely spice wisps. There is again outstanding volume to the beautifully textured large-scaled flavors that exude a bracing salinity on the sneaky long and well-balanced if overtly austere finale that displays absolutely stunning length. Here too plenty of patience will be required.

Aromas of dark cherries, licorice, peonies and sweet spices, framed by a deft touch of classy new oak, introduce the 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, ample and satiny wine that's fleshy and gourmand, its sweet, powdery tannins entirely concealed in an enveloping core of vibrant fruit. Such is its underlying substance and incipient complexity, however, that I suspect its immediate charm is deceptive.

Here the more reticent nose isn’t as elegant though it is more complex with its layered blend of red and dark pinot fruit, anise and discreet earth and floral wisps. The supple and highly seductive medium weight flavors possess excellent depth and persistence on the mildly austere finale. This is already appealing and several years of cellaring should only enhance its attractiveness.

The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru reveals the same seriousness it displayed in barrel. Unwinding in the glass with notes of cherries, dark berries, orange zest and petals, it's full-bodied, layered and enveloping, built around a chassis of sweet, powdery tannins and animated by lively acids. While this is generally the domaine's most immediate grand cru, the 2022 will nevertheless demand a bit of patience.

From the esteemed house of Bernard Dugat-Py, the Chorey-les-Beaune Tres Vieilles Vignes 2021 is an alluring and exquisite Burgundy. Dugat-Py's mastery is manifest in this wine, crafted with grapes sourced from impressively ancient vines, "Tres Vieilles Vignes", ensuring intensity of flavours. Another highlight of the range this year is the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques, a beautifully vibrant, penetrating wine that will likely prove almost immortal. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of rose petals, exotic spices, orange zest and sweet wild berries, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a seamless, integrated profile and a racy spine of acidity that carries though the long, penetrating finish. The only missing ingredient is time.

Dark red. Restrained but pure aromas of blackberry, currant, minerals and spices, complicated by a whiff of fresh blood. Densely packed and layered, with lovely finesse and minerality for this cuvee. Finishes spicy, sweet and long, with considerable dusty tannins and a whiff of black licorice. This is balanced to offer early appeal but has the juicy concentration and backbone to age well.

Here the more expressive nose is quite floral and high-toned with its mélange of red currant, pomegranate and soft earth scents. Once again there is excellent mid-palate density to the sleek, intense and powerful flavors that flash fine detail and minerality on the mildly austere, complex and strikingly long finish. This is a classic Champeaux of power and grace though one that is also clearly constructed to age for years.

Vinous (90-92)

(a blend of 50- and 90-year-old vines, according to Dugat; 80% vendange entier; this and the following 2013s are aging in 100% new barrels): Deep red with ruby tones. Blueberry, blackberry and licorice on the nose, along with a fresh note of menthol. Clearly tighter and more backward than the Evocelles; less minerally but more peppery. No shortage of power or thrust here. Finishes with a tougher tannic spine that will require patience.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle confirms all the promise it showed from barrel and ranks among the highlights of this year's collection chez Dugat-Py. Bursting with aromas of cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, truffles and loamy soil, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety but incisive, simultaneously impressively concentrated and stimulatingly vibrant, concluding with a long and sapid finish. This is the finest Petite Chapelle that I can remember tasting at this address.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru was picked on the first day of harvest, along with the Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères. Containing 50% whole bunch, it is very perfumed on the nose, the most floral of Dugat-Py’s Premier Crus, but thankfully the gushing violet and peony aromas do not obscure the fruit expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, more understated than I anticipated after the aromatics. This ends up a streamlined Petite Chapelle of wonderful delineation and salinity (though maybe the Champeaux has a little more complexity overall at this early juncture). Not so Petite!

Bright, full ruby. Captivating aromas of cassis, game, mocha and brown spices. Sweet, concentrated and chewy, with powerful cassis and kirsch fruit flavors. Already displays wonderful inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes with rather strong, slightly tough tannins that will require patience. This is quite impressive, but the 2000 version appears to have sweeter tannins.

Dugat-Py's 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Cœur du Roy emerges from parcels ranging from 50-103 years of age. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and black olive are rich and explosive on the palate, The 2012 is endowed with stunning purity and depth. This is another huge Burgundy that is going to require at least a few years in bottle.
