Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
Bright pale primrose, with a reductive nose. There’s a very significant weight to the fruit though, with good acidity behind, a little yellow fruit then a cushion of broad-based orchard fruit behind. A punchy, energetic finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. GSTSG$1,078.51 -

The 2019 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru comes from a 0.42-hectare parcel of 55-year-old vines. This is a step up in quality, delivering impressive, mineral-rich citrus fruit that conveys real vibrancy. The palate is well balanced with touches of praline and nectarine and a lovely build in the mouth while maintaining fine tension, leading to a spicy and quite persistent finish. This is a quality Genevrières that should age well over the next two decades.Inc. GSTSG$1,442.57 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)
Six barrels in all, from various sources. Clear bright mid yellow. A little bit more savoury, some pepper here, leaner and finer in profile than the Charmes but not quite as complete overall. Decent persistence. Drink from 2026-2030.Inc. GSTSG$1,462.21 -

The 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières has turned out brilliantly, offering up notes of orange zest, wet stones, white flowers, toasted hazelnuts and nutmeg. Medium- to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with lovely mid-palate plenitude, it marries ethereal purity with mineral depth to compelling effect, concluding with a sapid, chalky finish.Inc. The 2022 Meursault Les Narvaux has turned out beautifully, underlining what a strong vintage this is for the white wines of the Côte de Beaune. Unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, hazelnuts, sweet citrus oil and white flowers, it's medium- to full-bodied, satiny and vibrant, with excellent texture and cut, concluding with a long, saline finish.Inc. The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes is showing very well despite its youth, bursting with aromas of pear, toasted nuts, white flowers and hints of iodine. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and textural, with a creamy attack that segues into a bright, saline finish, it retains excellent balance in this riper, more powerfully styled vintage.Inc. As I wrote shortly after it was bottled, the 2021 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes is one of the sites that Germain's team was able to thoroughly protect from the spring frosts (I remember driving past the parcel 10 days later, with it and Domaine Leflaive's vines standing out as the solitary island of green amidst a sea of desiccated buds), and the result is a wine that transcends the vintage. Offering up notes of waxy citrus rind, buttery pastry, iodine and white flowers, it's medium- to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with racy acids, chalky structuring extract and a long, saline finish.Inc. GSTSG$1,540.67 -
Vinous (91-94)
Bright medium yellow. Aromas of yellow fruits, minerals and flowers, plus a hint of reduction. Conveys an impression of density without weight, with terrific acid tension giving the flavors of citrus fruits, flowers and spicy oak a sharply chiseled character in spite of the wine's element of reduction. Finishes sappy, savory, tactile and dry, with noteworthy lift. Terrific potential here.Inc. GSTSG$3,023.44 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)
From Ez Folatières, purchased as must. A lime streak runs through the mid yellow colour. This has notable density of bouquet without showing much detail yet. More substantial than the racy Pucelles, but retaining its own lively character behind the substantial flesh. Dense, generous, and with class. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru comes from bought must, the vines managed virtually organically except for one treatment during the growing season. This has a tightly wound, rather laconic bouquet that, despite coaxing, remains stubbornly mute. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh on the entry yet not quite achieving the same tension and nuance as the Puligny Champ Gain tasted alongside.Inc. The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne "Quintessence" Grand Cru comes from the Aloxe-Corton side, from a climat, and is made with purchased grapes from vines around 55–60 years old. The rather muted nose has trouble following on from the clearly more expressive Puligny Les Combettes. The palate is balanced with a fine bead of acidity, but the truth is that I find this missing the complexity and mineralité of a Grand Cru, surpassed by some of Girardin’s excellent Premier Crus this vintage.Inc. The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne "Quintessence" Grand Cru comes from a single parcel in Aloxe-Corton. This has more complexity and energy on the nose compared to the regular cuvée with fresh pineapple, grapefruit, crushed stone and a touch of mirabelle. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, harmonious and quite refined, not powerful on the finish but linear and poised. Eight barrels produced.Inc. GSTSG$2,309.12 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
From the lower part of Le Charlemagne. There is a regular cuvee too. Lively fresh primrose. At the moment the oak shows a little stronger than the wine on the first nose. The fruit is pretty substantial on the palate, starting at the front, then gracefully continues through to a stony and salty finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. GSTSG$3,814.35 -

The 2023 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru was completely destemmed. As a result, I feel this has a more attractive fruit profile, with very well-defined red berry and light blood orange scents.
