Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2018 Marsannay Les Longeroies, raised in 30% new oak and with 90% whole-bunch fruit, has a superb bouquet of well-defined red currant and cranberry fruit. The oak is very nicely integrated here. The saline palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins and good tension, though I would like a little more substance and grip on the finish. Still, I see good potential here from a traditionally styled and quite cerebral Marsannay.Inc. GSTSG$156.85 -

The 2019 Marsannay Les Longeroies comes from the middle of the vineyard on clayey soils. It is quite high-toned on the nose with Morello cherry, crushed strawberry and sea cave aromas. Deep, bright ruby-red. Pure, sexy aromas of raspberry, blackberry, plum and game. Thick and velvety on entry, then pliant and broad in the middle, with multidimensional flavors of dark fruits, pungent minerality, pepper, herbs, mocha and brown spices saturating the entire palate. I don't find this closed today but it will surely shut down soon. This voluptuous wine boasts superb lift and outstanding peppery persistence. Sylvie finds this too powerful. My father loves young wines, though, she told me. The 2000 is too old for him; he loves the 2003. This calls for a good decade of cellaring.Inc. GSTSG$579.42 -

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques sweeps across the palate with beautifully delineated black fruits. This shows tremendous aromatic intensity and fabulous length. With time in the glass, the wine turns more delicate, showing another side of its personality. A 65 note of licorice adds complexity on the multi-dimensional finish. Esmonin used 100% whole clusters for the fruit from the top of the vineyard, but fully destemmed the fruit from the bottom of the hill, resulting in about 70% whole clusters for the final blend. (vinified with 75% whole clusters; 90% new oak): Bright, dark red. Reduced aromas of black raspberry and licorice accented by spices. Rich, round and voluminous yet light on its feet owing to intense minerality and lively acidity; offers complex flavors of black raspberry, black cherry, redcurrant, spices, flowers and crushed rock. An element of peppery, spicy herbs really lifts the finish today while giving the wine a slight edge that calls for patience.Inc. GSTSG$1,811.01 -
Vinous (92+)
Good deep red with ruby tones. Ripe, deep perfume of black cherry, dark berries, crushed rock, wild herbs and game lifted by a peppery topnote. Very concentrated, intense, taut wine with terrific volume and inner-mouth energy. A captivating floral quality contributes another dimension. Explosive on the back end, saturating the mouth and exciting the salivary glands. Finishes with terrific late spicy lift. This wonderfully perfumed, classy wine needs time. Consumers will probably prefer the 2014 but the '13 is longer and has more finesse, said Sylvie Esmonin, adding that the 2014 doesn't have the same shoulders.Inc. GSTSG$1,652.96 -

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is deeper in color than its peers. The signature Esmonin aromatics feature plenty of upfront, bold black cherries and raspberry fruit, a little confit, well-defined but requiring more years in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, quite strict tannins. This has closed down since I last tasted it. Very linear and grippy on the finish. Cellar away for several years. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is dense and forward on the nose, slightly more concentration and just a little more confit in style. The new oak becomes more prominent with aeration. The palate is sweet and slightly candied on the opening with blood orange infused black fruit, grippy and quite bold. Not a subtle Clos Saint-Jacque, but it retains delineation throughout, finishing with cracked black pepper and mineral notes. This will need several years in bottle. The 2022 vintage presents an elegant bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, and delicate floral notes, complemented by fine tannins and a lingering finish. Perfectly balanced and expressive, this wine pairs beautifully with gourmet dishes, making it a treasured addition to any fine wine collection.

This calls for a good decade of cellaring. In BondSG$523.00 -

The Clos St. Jacques saw 100% new oak.In BondSG$1,915.00 -

An element of peppery, spicy herbs really lifts the finish today while giving the wine a slight edge that calls for patience. In BondSG$1,610.00 -

Consumers will probably prefer the 2014 but the '13 is longer and has more finesse, said Sylvie Esmonin, adding that the 2014 doesn't have the same shoulders. In BondSG$1,465.00 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. In BondSG$1,255.00 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. In BondSG$1,390.00 -

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, well-defined but backward. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite dense and layered with touches of allspice and pain d'épices, veins of blood orange towards the finish that feels quite long. I suspect this will close down after three or four years as it tends to do, otherwise, cellar it away for a decade. In BondSG$1,535.00 -

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru had just begun its malo and contains 56% whole bunch. This has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, briary and light violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, quite linear and precise towards the finish. Lively and focused, I admire the joie-de-vivre in this Clos Saint-Jacques.In BondSG$1,930.00 -

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a slightly deeper colour than its peers. It has a comparatively intense nose with bold black cherry and boysenberry fruit and just a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins and that chocolate tincture interlacing the red fruit with a sweet figgy finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. In BondSG$1,010.00 -
(12x75cl) 2022Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
Deep purple. The barrel toast is immediately evident and gives a fractional burnt toast flavour to the wine. The volume of fruit, though, is immense and will soon take over. It covers the tannins smoothly. On the one hand you can see the class of Clos St-Jacques, on the other, the hand of Sylvie stands out. Drink from 2030-2039. Tasted Nov 2023.In BondSG$2,625.00 -

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village offers intense brambly black fruit on a nose laced with orange zest. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy tannins and moderate acidity, just missing some tension and terroir expression toward the sweet and quite candied finish. In BondSG$448.00 -
(2x75cl) 2020Vinous (89-91)
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village was picked up to 8 September and here, the malo was unfinished. This contains 50% whole bunch. The nose was a little difficult to assess because of that, though there appears to be plenty of vibrant black cherry and boysenberry fruit here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, quite fresh and harmonious with a little piquancy towards the finish. In BondSG$213.00 -

Burghound (89)
(from vines that are to the east of D974 and mostly in Les Crais along with many other small parcels that include Le Fourneau, Reniard, Croix des Champs, Grands Champs, Champ Franc and Es Murots). A deeply pitched nose reflects aromas of humus-inflected poached plum, cassis and violet that display hints of earth and leather. The supple and succulent yet well-detailed medium weight flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel before concluding in a youthfully austere finish where a touch of wood arises. This is an fine Gevrey villages and worth your interest. In BondSG$1,140.00
