Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

A fine pale colour, light perfumed including a bit of sandalwood, much more finesse than Bougros. The oak comes out a little more, though the wood cannot hide the impressive backbone. A fine, understated classy finish. Drink from 2027-2036. Tasted Jul 2024.Inc. GSTSG$914.95 -

Lovely stuff, clean and pale, with a lean linear approach. More expressive juicy apple fruit on the palate, with a clearcut and somewhat saline finish. Very good. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted Jul 2024.Inc. GSTSG$290.38 -

The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a pure bouquet with white peach and orange blossom scents. A little linseed oil comes through with aeration. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, a very subtle reduction, poised and quite persistent towards the spicy finish. This is a convincing Corton-Charlemagne that should age with style. Very good full red. Pure but subdued aromas of cherry and licorice; much more reserved than the Latricieres. Conveys an impression of tightly coiled minerality and energy but this is rather inexpressive today in spite of its vibrancy. Finishes tight and discreet. The Rossignols' parcel of vines in the Gemeaux section of this cru produces a wine with more interior force wine, says David Rossignol, but it needs time. Finishes juicy and discreet.Inc. Made with 50% whole bunches in 2012, this has notes of pepper and clove spice on the nose and palate. There's plenty of sweet vanilla oak too, with chalky minerality and a hint of reduction on the palate. The wine was picked earlier and shows charming red fruits that complement the savoury undertones.Inc. GSTSG$1,994.05 -
Vinous (89-92)
Good full red. Darker but less perfumed on the nose than the Latricières, offering aromas of black raspberry and licorice complicated by smoke and cocoa powder and perked up by peppery spices. Silky-sweet in the mouth; clearly the plushest and densest of these 2014s to this point. There's more mid-palate stuffing here to support the slightly dusty, late-arriving tannins. This is always a dense wine, notes David Rossignol--closer to Chambertin in style than to Griottes, for example.Inc. GSTSG$238.60 -

The 2015 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a delightful bouquet with generous raspberry and wild strawberry aromas, very floral and exuberant with wilted violet scents and iris emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, crisp acidity and fine cohesion. This is nicely focused, although it just needs a little more substance to seal the deal on the finish. It just tapers in a little early and leaves you wanting more. Hopefully that will be addressed with bottle age.Inc. GSTSG$1,488.33 -

The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two plots, apparently from 2019 the domaine plans two separate cuvées, one from the lieu-dit of Les Gemeaux. It has an understated, beautifully defined bouquet that gradually unfurls in the glass: brambly red berry fruit, autumn leaves and hints of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is born with a pitch perfect line of acidity that imparts an engaging sense of harmony, very pure with a dash of spice on the finish. Superb.Inc. GSTSG$249.15 -

The 2021 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a slightly bricking hue, presumably due to whole bunch addition. The nose delivers on that, overtly stemmy to the point that it masks the red berry fruit and used tea leaf scents behind it. Thankfully, they do seem to be assimilated with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, again quite stemmy and brittle. There is plenty of freshness here but if you don't like whole cluster Burgundy, avoid. Mid purple, the bouquet perhaps a fraction less than fresh though just taken. There is clearly more volume here of a dark fruit with some blueberry, a few more tannins, more solid than the regular village wine. Needs freshening up at which point should merit a higher score. No deeper in colour than the village Beaune. Deep ripe cherry and raspberry but I find better balanced than in the Mariages. (from vines at the top of the vineyard in an old quarry). A discreet but perceptible application of wood and menthol nuances frame the liqueur-like dark berry and spice aromas. Good full red. Complex nose melds wild raspberry, tobacco and earth. Suave and fine-grained but youthfully subdued, with ripe balancing acidity giving the broad red fruit and soil flavors a sappy quality and very good snap. Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune, the 2011 Chambertin has a pure bouquet with wild strawberry, cranberry, animal fur and strong sous-bois aromas that are nicely defined, but lend it a feral quality that is intriguing. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp filigree tannins. This is tensile and focused with a sense of energy and poise that revs up on the gorgeous finish and leaves you crying for more. This is a great success for the domaine and is utterly sublime.Inc. GSTSG$384.31 -

A wine that doesn't have to try too hard to impress, this is everything you'd expect from a top Chambertin in an excellen year.
