Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)
The recipe for both 2022 Amoureuses wines is 30% new wood and 100% whole bunches. The Grâce des Argiles comes from the bottom section of the vineyard, grown on red clay. A solid rich bouquet yet absolutely with its seductive charm. A velvet covering on a big frame with a delicious richness of fruit without losing the precision of the year. A superb fruit weight, yet with energy from a sufficiently mineral acidity to finish. Drink from 2030-2040+.Inc. GSTSG$6,173.17 -

One third new wood. A rich deep dark purple. Plenty of depth, a rounded style, dark fruit but short of black, dark raspberry, medium plus concentration. Significant energy further back on the palate, now a redder style of fruit, good acidity, alongside the comfortable pillow of Amoureuses. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. GSTSG$5,155.05 -

Medium red, a bit less bright than the Gevrey villages Roasted plum, brown spices and an animal quality on the nose; riper and spicier than the 2008 version. Then opulent, rich and sweet but not cooked, with a seamless Chambolle-typical texture. With its rather soft acidity, this plump but very concentrated wine reminded me of a 1997. Medium red. Expressive aromas of purple fruits, violet, licorice and spices. Precise and energetic but a bit youthfully clenched; perhaps a bit hardened by the sulfur addition two weeks before my tasting but without any rough edges. Finishes savory and long, with dusty tannins and very good cling. These vines now average 28 years of age, noted Groffier, and produced just 14 hectoliters per hectare in 2010.Inc. GSTSG$2,446.40 -
(12x75cl) 2012Vinous (91-93)
A juicy, supple wine, the 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix is totally expressive in the glass. Sweet raspberries, spices, flowers and mint all meld together in a gracious, silky Burgundy long on class. Here, too, Groffier achieves lovely polish and silkiness. Sweet floral notes meld in the resonant finish.Inc. GSTSG$5,866.29 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts Doix has a reserved, tightly wound bouquet, but there is decent fruit stored up here, black plum and raspberry coulis, damp earthy notes that become more accentuated in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, plenty of juicy red fruit laid over fine structure, plus there is fine mineralité surfacing on the finish to complete to a very well-made Chambolle-Musigny from Nicolas Groffier. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Groffier's 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Hauts Doix is much more pure on the nose compared to the Les Groseilles from Digioia-Royer, sporting lifted red cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry preserves—vigorous and very focused. The palate is pure and sensual on the entry, the acidity very well judged, with a caressing and long finish laden with black fruit. The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix 1er Cru has a more compact, high-toned bouquet than Drouhin’s Chambolle premier cru tasted alongside, with darker fruit (blueberry and bilberry) complementing the red fruit. The palate is sweet and rounded on the entry and quite candied in style, but displays perfect acidity. Amazingly fragrant, silky and refined, this exudes rose, herbs, wild strawberry, cherry and spice aromas and flavors. This is very harmonious now, and caresses the palate, ending in a wonderful aftertaste of sweet fruit, spice and mineral. Best from 2013 through 2023. 315 cases made. -BSIn BondSG$431.00 -

Good medium red. Dark cherry, raspberry, wild herbs and a hint of caraway seed on the enticing nose. Dense and juicy; less plump than the Haut-Droix but has plenty of stuffing. Rather massive, creamy wine but imploded today, even clenched. This, too, shows an element of edgy citrussy acidity on the back end, which gives lift and a light touch to the finish. In BondSG$339.00 -

(50% vendange entier): Good deep red. Ripe aromas of small wild red fruits, mocha and brown spices, plus a note of menthol; deeper-pitched than the Haut-Doix. Then big, ripe and rich but fine-grained, with savory red fruit flavors complicated by spices and torrefaction. Finishes youthful, broad and long. Nicolas Groffier noted that his family used to vinify Sentiers for power, like our Amoureuses, but that he has cut back on extraction. Still, this is a strong wine in 2012.In BondSG$3,545.00 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers has an upfront, fruit-driven bouquet with pure raspberry, wild strawberry and dried rose petal aromas that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, gentle at first but segueing into quite a structured and multi-layered finish with edgy redcurrant and crushed strawberry notes on the finish. This is excellent. Tasted September 2016.In BondSG$3,265.00 -
