Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Raised entirely in new oak with all its stems, the 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a tough job following the crystalline Les Amoureuses. Almost opaque at first, this whole bunch imparts a strong pepperiness, with a light charcoal scent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, taut and fresh with a slightly chalky textured, sorbet-fresh finish. Afford this 5-8 years in bottle.Inc. GSTSG$14,575.39 -

(5-Star Wine) 100% of both new wood and whole bunch vinification. The Clos de Bèze sits in its own tank apart from the rest of the wines. Must be a bit of a snob I suppose. A solid central core of purple, an imperial robe. Just a soupçon of oak on the nose but obviously the fruit is far more evident. There is indeed an immense weight of dark fruit on the nose, with the whole bunch pepper and spice woven throughout. Excellent weight and density. Rich red roses, along with a sensual dark raspberry, sensuality and structure beautifully interwoven. Drink from 2032-2045+.Inc. GSTSG$7,879.02 -

100% new wood. Solid bright purple, and on the chunky side. Massive, almost inky, a very dark fruit, the 2023 Clos de Bèze does not quite blossom on the palate as it has in some recent years. Despite the ripeness of the fruit, this feels a little introverted today, or perhaps a bit subdued behind its oak. Drink from 2033-2042. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. GSTSG$7,404.87 -

Bright dark red. Captivating nose offers redcurrant, raspberry, iron, tobacco, minerals and coffee. Lush, silky and sweet; youthfully reticent in the mouth but already offers an ineffably complex perfume. Boasts impressively fine, late-arriving tannins for the vintage. The wine's firm acid/tannin spine gives the finish excellent bite. A beauty.Inc. GSTSG$16,324.84 -

Good dark red with ruby highlights. Sexy, complex aromas of raspberry, minerals and faded rose, lifted by an exhilarating whiff of grapefruit. Lush, concentrated and sweet, but with noteworthy vinosity and sappiness to the tangy red berry flavors. The slow-mounting finish is positively electric, saturating the mouth with perfume. Robert Groffier’s 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses was tasted blind in a line-up of 2011 Amoureuses in Holland. It has a deep ruby color, but the nose is far more backward than the first two wines, a little more herbaceous and tertiary (perhaps with some more stem addition?) but still well-defined. But it is certainly less flamboyant than Drouhin and Lucien le Moine’s Amoureuses ’11, though returning on my second run-through, the wine unfurls supremely well and gains intensity. The palate is very intense and very fresh, very citric with good tension, although it does not quite have the complexity that the aromatics suggest. Reticent and masculine, this needs 4-5 years in bottle. Tasted June 2014.Inc. GSTSG$1,035.40 -

The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is matured with 40% whole clusters in 100% new oak. Again, the stems have a strong sway over the nascent aromatics, but there is sufficient fruit underneath to absorb that with age. Fine delineation. Nicolas Groffier has done a superb job with his Amoureuses; he will separate the upper and lower parts in 2022. Just under Musigny, he explains, there is a lot of sand, which helps the vines ripen to a greater degree. This cuvée has a black plum and cassis fruit character with notes of earth and smoke. The texture is fuller and more powerful, with great ripeness and depth. One should wait seven to ten years to open this monumental wine and drink over the next thirty.Inc. GSTSG$7,922.62 -

One third new wood. A more energetic bright purple. The bouquet shows a lighter concentration of fruit. This is the leaner of the two though making up for that with an impressive precision of flavour, a fresher red fruit, raspberry and redcurrant, more in the style of Les Sentiers than neighbouring Les Hauts Doix. The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru comes from 80-years old vines that was harvest over five morning, one hour each day and vinified in the same vat of course. Blended with 50% whole bunch and matured in 25% new oak, it has a well-defined bouquet with rose petals, red berry fruit, just a very faint hints of menthol in the far distance. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh and vibrant, lightly spiced towards the finish that feels linear and strict. This Amoureuses does not want to give too much away at the moment but the length in the mouth cannot be denied and augurs well for the future. In BondSG$9,865.00 -

Vinous (92-94)
The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is matured with 40% whole clusters in 100% new oak. Again, the stems have a strong sway over the nascent aromatics, but there is sufficient fruit underneath to absorb that with age. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine detail, taut and fresh, and quite saline. Not an intense Les Amoureuses but I find some similarities to Christophe Roumier's that I tasted just an hour earlier. In BondSG$4,710.00 -
Decanter (97)
Nicolas Groffier has done a superb job with his Amoureuses; he will separate the upper and lower parts in 2022. Just under Musigny, he explains, there is a lot of sand, which helps the vines ripen to a greater degree. This cuvée has a black plum and cassis fruit character with notes of earth and smoke. The texture is fuller and more powerful, with great ripeness and depth. One should wait seven to ten years to open this monumental wine and drink over the next thirty. In BondSG$7,215.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)
One third new wood. A more energetic bright purple. The bouquet shows a lighter concentration of fruit. This is the leaner of the two though making up for that with an impressive precision of flavour, a fresher red fruit, raspberry and redcurrant, more in the style of Les Sentiers than neighbouring Les Hauts Doix. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.In BondSG$5,130.00
