Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Barrières comes from a single 0.70-hectare parcel in the north of the appellation. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)
One third their own vines in Les Plateaux, two thirds purchases from Longecourts. More ruby than purple, with a classic Nuits-St-Georges profile on the nose, a little plum alongside the red fruit. This comes across as more concentrated than the other village wines, with a useful structure from a mix of tannin and acidity. Robust, not rustic. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Oct 2024.In BondSG$155.00 -

Moderately saturated medium red. Subdued aromas of red berries, mocha and spicy oak are lifted by a floral quality. Not especially fleshy or sweet but more penetrating than the Clos Saint-Marc, showing good floral lift and more flavor interest. Turns a bit lean and herbal on the back end, though, finishing with slightly dry, dusty tannins and a note of menthol. In BondSG$535.00 -

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Argillières 1er Cru certainly sports one of the better aromatics from the flight of wines from Prémeaux, offering detailed black and red fruit, pressed flowers (iris) and subtle mineral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, beautifully integrated new oak, impressive depth and genuine finesse and complexity on the finish. Wonderful. The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Argillières 1er Cru, matured with 40% whole bunch, offers fleshy ripe black cherries, raspberry coulis and marmalade scents on the nose, a touch of bloody orange (freshly squeezed) emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with layers of pure red and black fruit. Svelte, velvety and utterly seductive, it does not stint on precision and persistence on the white pepper finish. This is a brilliant Clos des Argillieres from RionIn BondSG$150.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)
The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Barrières comes from a single 0.70-hectare parcel in the north of the appellation. It doesn't quite click into gear on the nose like the wonderful 2022, rather it is perhaps more discrete with loamy scents percolating through the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a firm grip. Fine tannins and a conspicuous, almost briny marine influence develop toward the finish, lending another dimension. It coheres nicely in the glass and it should give 12 to 15 years' drinking pleasure. In BondSG$172.00 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos Saint-Marc has a complex, quite arresting bouquet with finely tuned dark cherry and raspberry fruit, hints of incense of pressed flowers developing with time. I adore the precision of these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, notes of blackberry and raspberry preserves, a keen line of acidity and a pleasant touch of bitterness toward the long finish. This is another delightful, beautifully sculpted wine from Rion. Tasted September 2017.In BondSG$663.00 -

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St Marc 1er Cru is showing some reduction on the nose, like many of its NSG compadres. This seems to dissipate with aeration, although the nuance and detail of Gouges's Les Pruliers tasted alongside do not materialize. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, a little chewiness on the entry and good grip. There is a firmness here, a little obduracy that should be tamed with bottle age, so give it five years in the cellar, because there is potential. The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St Marc 1er Cru, which is the domaine's monopole of just under a hectare, contains the same amount of whole bunch fruit as the Clos des Argillières and yet its presence is completely disguised. The fruit here is a little redder on the nose, showing touches of bay leaf and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with insistent grip on the entry. This feels quite chalky in texture, not quite as harmonious as the Clos des Argillières, but with more thrust toward the finish. This is another excellent 2017 from Rion.In BondSG$613.00 -
Vinous (95-97)
The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St. Marc 1er Cru is curiously much less expressive on the nose than the Clos des Argillières despite coaxing. Finally, after I am already bloody late for my next appointment, it unfolds with wonderful mineral-rich blue fruit. The palate is clean and very precise, extremely focused, the oak seamlessly integrated and it fans out in splendid fashion on the lightly spiced fashion. About as good as Nuits Saint-Georges you can find.In BondSG$986.00
