Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Burghound (88-90)
The is also very pretty with its array of cool and pure red, earth and soft spice nuances, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The delicious, round and sappy middleweight flavors possess solid mid-palate concentration and a seductive texture before culminating in a bitter pit fruit and mildly austere finish.Inc. Burghound (88-90)
(this includes the fruit from the domaine’s .6 ha parcel of Au Bas de Combe as well as fruit from Les Lavières and the villages portion of Aux Grandes Vignes). Here the expressive nose blends hints of cassis and red berry liqueur with those of soft spice and newly turned earth. There is a lovely texture to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that also conclude in a firm, mildly warm and serious but not especially rustic or youthfully austere finishInc. Domaine fruit from Bas de Combe, plus purchased Grandes Vignes. Ruby purple in colour, picked at a more ideal ripeness than the Marsannay. Plenty of energy here in a rich red fruit with just a suggestion of blacker berries, yet with good acidity. Some plums to finish. Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted Nov 2024.Expected Price RangeSG$534 - SG$652 -
(6x75cl) 2018Vinous (85-87)
The 2018 Marsannay Village is a cru that Jean-Nicolas Méo told me he is considering returning under the domaine since he is finding it difficult to find good sources. It has a pleasant bouquet of cassis and blueberry fruit, nicely defined and floral in style. The palate is quintessential Marsannay with quite sturdy tannins and plenty of blue fruit, although I would like to see more delineation toward the finish.Inc. GSTSG$631.63 -
(6x75cl) 2021Vinous (86-88)
The 2021 Marsannay Village, which comes from a single parcel, has a crisp, quite stony, almost terse bouquet and only reluctantly opens up in the glass. The palate is balanced with a sapid entry, touches of blue fruit and a steely finish.Inc. GSTSG$763.44 -
Vinous (89-91)
The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru comes from two vineyards, La Perrière and Terre Blanches, the former affected by hail in August. It has a relatively simple bouquet, though it seems fresh and focused. The palate is lighter in style, quite elegant, nicely poised if just missing a little substance on the finish.Inc. The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru, which comes from Les Hauts Pruliers (this is unlikely to be mentioned on the label). (6x75cl) 2013Vinous (92+)
Healthy deep red. Very pure aromas of crushed dark berries, minerals and bitter chocolate. Juicy, tight and penetrating, conveying terrific energy and cut to its flavors of dark berries, licorice and herbs. Quite backward today, even austere, but built to age. Jean-Nicolas Méo does not normally vinify with stems but he made this wine with 10% whole clusters.Inc. GSTSG$2,163.00 -
(3x150cl) 2015Vinous (94)
Healthy dark red. Pure but reticent aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and violet. Intensely flavored and sharply delineated, displaying terrific energy to its sappy flavors of blackberry, licorice and violet. Conveys an impression of strong acidity for the year, which the inclusion of some of the stems no doubt amplifies. Beautifully balanced Nuits-Saint-Georges with a firm tannic spine and lingering salty minerality. I'm not sure I would have identified this wine as a 2015.Inc. GSTSG$3,644.37 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru needed a lot of aeration before it finally graced me with its presence. There is no stem addition in this vintage as there has been in previous years. It has a very well-defined bouquet even though it feels "aloof" at the moment, presenting sous-bois-infused black fruit and traces of iodine. The palate is well balanced with a slightly lactic, licorice-tinged entry. A precocious Les Boudots in the making. There is firm structure, good grip and a countervailing sorbet-like zip on the finish. This has all the components of a very fine Nuits Saint-Georges, but it will require cellaring.Inc. GSTSG$1,945.11 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has a very expressive bouquet with ebullient red and blue fruit combined with violet and crushed stone scents. Dark purple black, full of energy, almost too much, the fruit is pretty ripe as well, some black cherry notes, balanced on the palate, some coffee to finish. Wouldn’t want it to be any riper. Always a lower acid site. 13.3% but the aromatics show that it needed to be picked. Tasted: December 2021.Inc. GSTSG$1,598.46 -

The 1991 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru is fully mature on the nose with brambly red berry fruit, undergrowth, and hints of citrus peel and yuzu in the background that lend plenty of vim. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft entry. More like a 1990 in some ways, but there is fine grip, a little dryness creeping in on the back palate with tobacco notes gathering pace towards the finish. This is certainly commendable given its age. Tasted at the Méo-Camuzet dinner at Arbor in Hong Kong.Inc. GSTSG$1,117.14 -
(6x75cl) 2013Vinous (90-93)
Bright, dark red. Slightly reduced aromas of cherry, iron, red licorice and dried flowers. Sappy and sweet on the palate, and much easier to taste today than the Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes despite its solid underlying structure. Finishes savory and lightly saline, with noteworthy subtle length.Inc. GSTSG$2,052.97 -
Vinous (91-93)
(14% alcohol!): Dark red with ruby tones. Deep, musky scents of black raspberry, smoke and game; very ripe but reserved. Dense, tactile and concentrated, with its raspberry, animal fur, chocolate and saline flavors communicating an impression of strong dry extract. More than enough stuffing here to support the ripe tannins.Inc. GSTSG$345.42 -

The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers is showing especially well, unwinding in the glass with notes of sweet wild berries, plums, sweet soil tones and smoked meats. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and concentrated, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Like many of Méo's 2018s, I suspect it will offer a broad drinking window.Inc. GSTSG$1,584.27 -

Pick up some 2020 while you can as 11 barrels were made. In 2021, only four were made. This will need a few years to come around with its slightly drying tannins, but otherwise, this is almost ready to enjoy. The mid-palate feels satiny and tastes of black cherries and licorice. The whole package is lifted by well-placed acidity that dances across the back palate. 2024-30Inc. GSTSG$1,221.50 -

(Sweet Spot Outstanding) Moderate reduction with some wood influence blurs the underlying fruit today. Otherwise, the ripe, suave, round and powerful broad-shouldered flavors exude a fine minerality on the muscular, mouth coating and wonderfully persistent finish that is both dusty and moderately austere. While this should be reasonably approachable after 7 to 8 years, it should also be capable of repaying 12+ years of cellaring.Inc. GSTSG$1,635.52 -
Burghound (90-93)
(from a .73 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). A deft application of wood sets off the markedly ripe yet still nicely fresh nose of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and warm earth. As one would reasonably expect, there is better volume and density to the more powerful medium-bodied flavors that are at once rich and caressing before terminating in a palate soaking, very firm and sneaky long finish. Lovely and a wine that should be approachable after only 5-ish years yet easily reward a decade plus of cellaringInc. GSTSG$1,911.27 -

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Perrières 1er Cru is under the négoce label, although Méo-Camuzet is responsible for both viticulture and winemaking.
