Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Bright medium red. Less black on the nose than most of Fourrier's other 2016s, offering complex aromas of raspberry, wild strawberry, crushed rock and smoky minerals. Plush and fine-grained but light on its feet, boasting terrific juicy lift; like a mouthful of crushed rocks and flowers. Youthfully tight but not hard, this wine finishes with terrific sappy energy, savory minerality and building sweetness. I would have guessed that this beauty was harvested earlier than many of Fourrier's domain wines but in fact it was picked on September 30.Inc. GSTSG$4,044.38 -

The 2010 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru from Jean-Noel Gagnard, out of magnum, is quite deep in color, although not premoxed. It has an open bouquet of white flowers, yellow plum and orange pith, nicely defined if just needing a little more mineralité. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity, lovely walnut and hazelnut notes rendering it quite Meursault-like, and plenty of weight and concentration toward the finish. I do not estimate this to be a long-term Bâtard, so don’t hesitate to pull the cork soon. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2010 white burgundy tasting in London.Inc. GSTSG$6,086.34 -

A notably ripe and ever-so-mildly exotic but not really surmature nose consists primarily of spicy white orchard fruit along with hints of wood, white flowers and viognier. Sample taken from barrel and tank. Clear mid yellow. The 2008 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Cailleret has a delightful bouquet, perhaps now fully mature with almond, grilled walnut and light minty aromas developing in the glass. I appreciate the cohesion and focus here. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, quite phenolic and pithy. Crafted in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis, this Pinot Noir is meticulously vinified by the renowned Jean-Michel Guillon, whose dedication to traditional Burgundian techniques ensures exceptional quality. Hand-harvested from the La Riotte vineyard, the grapes undergo a gentle fermentation process in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving the wine’s delicate aromatics and vibrant acidity. A modest proportion of oak is introduced during ageing in French barrels, enhancing the wine’s complexity without overshadowing its intrinsic fruit character. The 2022 vintage showcases deep garnet hues, with an intricate bouquet of red berries, subtle earthy undertones, and a hint of spice. On the palate, it is elegantly structured, offering silky tannins and a long, harmonious finish. Jean-Michel Guillon Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 2022 promises both immediate enjoyment and graceful ageing potential, making it a distinguished addition to any fine wine collection.

Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2010 white burgundy tasting in London. In BondSG$5,465.00 -

A notably ripe and ever-so-mildly exotic but not really surmature nose consists primarily of spicy white orchard fruit along with hints of wood, white flowers and viognier. The rich, opulent and vibrant broad-shouldered flavors possess lovely complexity while delivering excellent length on the powerful and focused if somewhat linear finish. This will almost certainly add body with age, and it appears to be structured for mid to even longer-term cellaring. In BondSG$4,555.00 -

The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from a one-third hectare of vines of which half is en friche (fallow), so only a couple of barrels are produced. It has a very delineated bouquet with enticing citrus peel, crushed pebbles, Clementine and blackcurrant leaf aromas. The palate is very well balanced with impressive concentration and slightly viscous on the entry. Quite rich for a Bâtard-Montrachet yet poised and mineral-driven on the finish. What a wonderful Bâtard-Montrachet - and I confess that I could not resist a cheeky morning sip!In BondSG$4,245.00 -

Sample taken from barrel and tank. Clear mid yellow. The bouquet is very backward today but there is great class to the fruit on the palate, with a little honeydew melon suddenly surging forth at the finish. Multi-layered, at the very least adequate acidity with a very long aftertaste. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Dec 2024.In BondSG$3,500.00 -

The acidity could maybe be a little higher just to counter that weight, although I like the unabashed spiciness and that tang of white pepper that lingers on the aftertaste. This is worth seeking out. Tasted at Sarah Marsh's 2008 White Burgundy tasting. In BondSG$925.00 -

Bright, pale yellow. Highly aromatic nose combines orange zest and crushed stone. The broadest of these 2014 samples but energized by mineral-driven acidity and a strong salty quality. Finishes firm-edged and long, with subtle orange-y sweetness and crushed-rock minerality. In BondSG$2,010.00 -

5*s 34 hl/ha. Fine pale lemon, with a very distinct Caillerets nose - all the stones you could want - to support the pure white fruit. Impeccable density on the palate, now including some bright yellow plum fruit, racy acidity, layers on layers here, boding well for the future. Perfect balancing acidity, this has the power to age extremely well.In BondSG$1,035.00 -
