Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru had been racked the previous week, but it was essentially the final wine I tasted as it was just about to be bottled. It has a stricter and more backward bouquet than the Chênes Carteaux: blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, the 20% new oak neatly folded in. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, leaning more towards black fruit laced with tar and tobacco. Quite Morey-like towards the finish with impressive persistence. Give this two or three years in bottle to shave the edges. Very fine.Inc. GSTSG$669.74 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
Racked to tank in October, to bottle in December. Deep purple. The bouquet is certainly a rich expression of pinot fruit without being over-ripe. Very full on the palate yet with energy through adequate acidity. Excellent balance and persistence. A fresh classic. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. GSTSG$631.55 -

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet of brambly red berry fruit, plus a dusting of dark chocolate and damp undergrowth; gentle and attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Fleshy toward the finish, delivering tart red fruit, this will be one of Gouge’s more approachable cuvées and should drink well for 12–15 years.Inc. GSTSG$665.68 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)
Racked to tank. Chaignots enjoyed a slightly better yield at just above 25 hl/ha, because there was more juice in the grapes. Full rich purple. The nose has similar basic characteristics of ripe fruit but is not too concentrated. Very good depth thereafter, and as with all the wines here the fruit is that little bit fresher on the palate than the nose. Good acidity at the finish. 14.2% alcohol. Tasted: November 2021Inc. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)
Medium deep crimson colour. The nose shows an assured ripeness of red berry fruit, supported by a little new oak (20%). Very pretty and quite floral on the nose, yet much more solid red fruit weight on the palate, with a little vanilla from the oak playing at the edges. Good length. Drink from 2026-2031.Inc. The 2008 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has a pretty bouquet with cranberry, pomegranate, bergamot and Vervane tea aromas that gently unfold from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite crisp and certainly conveying more energy and tension than the 2007. It gently fans out towards the finish that is a little ferrous in style, with a dash of cracked pepper on the finish. Excellent. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.Inc. GSTSG$792.87 -

The 2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers stands in contrast to the suave and elegant 2017 rendition. Offering up aromas of raspberries, cassis, dark chocolate, rich soil tones and cedary new oak, the wine is medium to full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with bright acids and an imposing chassis of rich, chewy tannin. Firm and tight-knit, this will require all the patience that readers will be accustomed to afford Gouges' Pruliers.Inc. GSTSG$154.32 -

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru did not suffer too much hail according to Antoine Gouges, at most 5%. This is very ripe and slightly gourmand on the nose, light savory notes emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, nicely controlled and then just tightening up towards the finish that shows just a bit of VA. Quite dense of a Pruliers, give this some time in the cellar.Inc. GSTSG$873.55 -

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has a simple nose with redcurrant and blueberry fruit and a light marine influence in the background, though it is not the most complex. Still in barrel. An intense deep purple. A little wood alongside the relatively heady fruit. Rich purple. Very oaky on the nose, but note that this is still in wood, unracked. Sample taken from all barrels. Sturdy stuff, very Nuits-St-Georges with plums and a little suggestion of a peachier aspect, gourmand and juicy, yet with a fine clean structure at the back. I like this more and more as it progresses across the palate. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. GSTSG$1,069.73 -

The 1995 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a fleshy and (for Gouges) quite a corpulent bouquet with bergamot and crushed rose petals. This remains exuberant, especially juxtaposed against the 1996 Clos des Porrets. The palate is fleshy and rounded with plenty of dark berry fruit laced with brine and clove. There is impressive persistence to this Les Saint-Georges, one of the domains finest of the decade. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.Inc. GSTSG$314.90 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)
Deep red-ruby. Deep but reticent aromas of noteworthy complexity: dark berries, minerals, roast meat and truffle. Big, broad, sweet and filled in; a seamless wine of grand cru volume. One senses the wine's minerality in its structure more than its flavors. Finishes very long and suave, with strong tannins perfectly buffered by middle-palate richness. This will be bottled in March with about 12.9% alcohol.Inc. GSTSG$356.32 -

Jonnson mentions he has a few reds that aren’t on the list, including the 2001 Gouges Les Saint-Georges. That’s another obvious Yes! I absolutely adore the Gouges wines, especially with some bottle age. Two thousand one is a vintage of reticent, tightly wound Burgundies that have been slow to mature. Frankly, I thought the 2001 Les Saint-Georges would be a bit more forward. Instead, it is bright, aromatically intense, and super-structured, with even more youthful intensity in its red-toned fruit than I expect. Readers who own it should be positively thrilled. What a wine!Inc. GSTSG$397.39 -
Vinous (94+)
Saturated ruby-red. Explosive, multidimensional nose offers raspberry, dark cherries macerated in alcohol, minerals and leather, with a treble note of citrus skin. Like liquid silk in the mouth; already shows its great depth, but the highly complex, soil-inflected flavors of black raspberry, dark chocolate, leather and fresh blood are still youthfully reserved. Most impressive today on the remarkably sappy, precise finish, which builds slowly and subtly and is given even greater penetration and grip by a suggestion of grapefruit. I could drink this wine every night of the week-and probably for the next two decades.Inc. GSTSG$345.07 -

Moderately saturated medium red. Tight, pure nose offers restrained scents of cherry, flowers and peppery spices. Then sweet but taut in the mouth; impressively concentrated owing to the very low yield here but quite closed and hard to taste today. Perfumed and powerful wine but ungiving, and showing less sweetness than the Vaucrains. I'd hold this for five years.Inc. GSTSG$537.15 -

Bright medium red. Lovely high-toned aromas of currant, dried flowers, stone, tobacco, leather and earth. Silky and concentrated, with terrific lift and noble rusticity to its rich, sharply delineated red fruit flavors. Really saturates the entire mouth without leaving any impression of weight. The tannins are completely enrobed by the wine's velvety texture. This impeccably balanced wine leaves the taste buds vibrating. Boasts the class and texture of a grand cru. I recently opened a bottle of the 1993 and the family resemblance was clear. But the 2010 boasts suaver tannins and greater refinement.Inc. GSTSG$5,781.14 -

Bright red. Ripe, musky aromas of red berries, minerals and rust. Suave and creamy-sweet in the mouth, with an almost jammy ripeness but also very good framing acidity to the crunchy red berry flavors. Perhaps a bit youthfully disassociated at present, not to mention firmly tannic on the back end, yet this is easier to taste today than the Vaucrains owing to its sheer sex appeal. Offers superb potential.Inc. GSTSG$2,497.06 -

The 2015 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges took three or four minutes to unfold...but what a bouquet! Copious black cherry, cranberry jus, pomegranate and bergamot scents all infused with stupendous mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannin, plenty of blood orange infusing the red and black fruit, a keen line of acidity and a gentle grip towards the finish. It constitutes one of the best vintages that I have tasted in recent years. It should be considered a stunning victory for the 2015 vintage, but without wishing to sound like a broken record, please cellar this for 5-7 years for it to attain its drinking plateau.Inc.
