Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru had been racked the previous week, but it was essentially the final wine I tasted as it was just about to be bottled. It has a stricter and more backward bouquet than the Chênes Carteaux: blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, the 20% new oak neatly folded in. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, leaning more towards black fruit laced with tar and tobacco. Quite Morey-like towards the finish with impressive persistence. The 1996 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a broody and herbaceous nose, and a little green around the edges, becoming pastille-like with aeration. The palate is fresh with pointed, sharp acidity, gentle in terms of grip but this fades alarmingly on the finish. This suggests it is running out of puff so drink up! Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte. In BondSG$2,910.00 -

The 2011 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry, a subtle seawater scent that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, packed full of blackcurrant and cranberry. There is a trademark leafiness that develops towards the firm, structured finish with traces of black tea on the aftertaste. Give this another two or three years in bottle. Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)
Good bright, deep red. Blackberry, minerals and crushed stone on the nose. Densely packed and concentrated, with savory dark berry, floral and licorice flavors leading to a youthfully powerful if rather strict finish. Classic sturdy Nuits-Saint-Georges but with lovely energy and finesse to its fruit. The big tannins spread out on the back end, yet the wine maintains a light touch. In BondSG$1,240.00 -

Light cherry red with a suggestion of vegetal undergrowth on the nose. Lively and refined. Cool impression with very refined tannins. Absolutely nothing like the rather stodgy, austere style of yesteryear. Not long term but very charming. In BondSG$138.00 -
Wine Advocate (93+)
The 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets Saint Georges is—like the Vaucrains—already beginning to shut down, gradually unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis, currant leaf, rich spice and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine's fine-grained tannins take center stage for the moment, but its depth, concentration and energy are all very promising: the only missing ingredient is time.In BondSG$179.00 -
Decanter (94)
This hails from a mid-slope premier cru on the south side of Nuits and mixes clay and limestone soils within the Gouges' 3.7ha monopole. It’s an intense, aromatic and comparatively early-drinking style with some chalky freshness, medium-weight tannins and a hint of volatility. In BondSG$585.00 -

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and touches of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, saline and slightly peppery with a structured, quite firm yet balanced finish. Give this another couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. In BondSG$157.00 -

Vinous (90-92)
The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet, iris and incense notes dominating at the moment, slightly at the expense of terroir expression. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with fleshy red berry fruit and a touch of white pepper and clove, dovetailing into a piquant, lively finish. All it lacks is a bit of persistence on the aftertaste. In BondSG$604.00 -
Tim Atkin MW (94)
Antoine Gouges says this is a cooler terroir, like its neighbor Ch nes Quarteaux, because it is flatter and the Combe des Vallerots runs down one edge. Still, the warmth of the vintage comes through in the fruit with succulent blackberries and cassis. The tannins are, again, more old school with some stern grip. The focused, long finish shows a hint of oak toast with crushed slate. Just give this some time in bottle. 2025-40In BondSG$1,310.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
Bottled yesterday! A vibrant fresh mid purple. Lots of energy too on the nose. Perhaps seems a little richer after yesterday’s bottling, which may have slightly muddied the waters - but this is clearly a good wine with plenty of dark red fruit and a good thread of acidity. The tannins are gentle. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: November 2022In BondSG$475.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)
The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru had been racked the previous week, but it was essentially the final wine I tasted as it was just about to be bottled. It has a stricter and more backward bouquet than the Chênes Carteaux: blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, the 20% new oak neatly folded in. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, leaning more towards black fruit laced with tar and tobacco. Quite Morey-like towards the finish with impressive persistence. Give this two or three years in bottle to shave the edges. Very fine.In BondSG$1,280.00
