Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

  • Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2005 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (92-95)

Reticent nose hints at menthol and spices. Then wonderfully flavorful and gripping in the mouth, with a sweet orange marmalade flavor framed by lively acidity. At once superripe and precise, and fresh and very long on the aftertaste. This was picked at the beginning of the harvest, with potential alcohol of 13.8%. Boasts superb intensity and density of material.
  • Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2015 (1x75cl)

    Burghound (96)

This is slightly more complex if a bit less elegant with its equally broad-ranging nose of apple, pear, white flowers and mandarin orange, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to warrant mentioning. There is outstanding volume to the concentrated, powerful and palate coating flavors that are supported by a firm acid spine on the tension-filled and massively persistent finish. This is a big yet well-balanced Bâtard that should age for a very long time yet be approachable after only 5-ish years or so.
  • Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2016 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

Compared to the premier crus at this address, this wine offers another dimension on the nose, with aromas of pear, white flowers, almond and hazelnut complemented by deeper-pitched soil tones and a hint of dried fruits. Hugely rich but surprisingly energetic on the palate, conveying seamless flavors of yellow and dried fruits and salty minerality. Totally saturates the mouth and mounts on the back end without leaving any impression of heaviness. Boillot told me that the 2017 version of this wine is a bit higher in acidity but this bottle boasts excellent verve.
  • Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (1x150cl)

The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is showing brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, honeycomb, white flowers, orange oil and wheat toast. • Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 (3x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)

Mid lemon yellow. There is a slight reduction to the nose. All the weight appears on the palate with a gorgeously sensual deep white fruit, not heavy at all. White pepper. There is no sign of the reduction on the palate. An exceptional example with more tension at the back, great potential for the long term. Guillaume Boillot has dialled down to 50% new wood here and that is plenty. Tasted: 10/1/2021
  • Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 (1x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)

The holding is right in the middle of Bâtard-Montrachet, with rows all the way up and down. Mid yellow. A weighty punchy bouquet, not quite so fine. Massive on the palate and the fruit takes on a whiter, not over ripe configuration, with excellent thread of acidity. Still an absolute baby but will certainly achieve its grand cru status. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: October 2022
  • Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 (1x75cl)

A glowing pale yellow. Super-concentrated if not yet very yielding bouquet. Extra tension here, certainly some depth, but perhaps more in class than power. That will change with time – the class with remain but the depth will expand. White fruit, tension, some youthful bitters, but keeping itself to itself for the moment. Really very long finish though. • Henri Boillot Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94-97)

(13.5% alcohol; 30% vendange entier): Dark red-ruby. Wild aromas and flavors of black raspberry, earthy spices and mocha, with an element of menthol freshness providing lift. Round, fat and highly concentrated; boasts outstanding richness and depth but will need extended aging to deliver on its inherent complexity. The crop level here was just 25 hectoliters per hectare, or less than the Chambertins. Most promising today on spicy, rising, edge-free finish, which saturates every square millimeter of the palate with salty minerality and dark fruits. This wonderfully silky, classy Bonnes-Mares is from stony, whiter soil on the Chambolle side of the cru.
  • Henri Boillot Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2017 (1x75cl)

    Burghound (95)

Here too the nose is quite restrained with its admirably pure aromas of red cherry, dark currant, spice and earth along with notes of violet and lavender. I very much like the sense of underlying tension to the succulent, indeed even juicy, medium weight plus flavors that exude a subtle salinity on the tautly muscular and firm finish that flashes just a hint of youthful austerity. This isn't quite as complex as the Chambertin but it's close and it may well close the gap over time as this is also very clearly structured for mid to even longer-term keeping.

On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and muscular, with lively acids and an impressively structured, introverted profile for the vintage, concluding with a long, saline finish.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

A glowing pale yellow. Super-concentrated if not yet very yielding bouquet. Extra tension here, certainly some depth, but perhaps more in class than power. That will change with time – the class with remain but the depth will expand. White fruit, tension, some youthful bitters, but keeping itself to itself for the moment. Really very long finish though. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: December 2023.

The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is beautiful, mingling notions of red plums and raspberries with hints of rose petals, orange rind and warm spices, framed by a deft application of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, bright and concentrated, it has lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, elegantly chalky finish. Fine-boned and vibrant, this has turned out very well indeed.

The 2021 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is another attractive wine in this range from Boillot. Medium in body and nicely lifted, the Bonnes Mares has plenty of energy, if not quite the depth or textural resonance of the very best years. This is a decidedly small-scaled Bonnes Mares. - Antonio Galloni
