Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (88-90)
Pretty medium red. Fresh raspberry and mineral aromas. Pliant and sweet in the mouth, with a succulent quality. Very red fruit in character, in the style of the Chatelots, but with minerality accentuated by the wine's firm acidity. A bit tighter than usual for this cuvee, and developing slowly. Good firm, lingering finish. This was 12.8% potential alcohol, at the high end for this estate in 2004.Inc. GSTSG$350.87 -
Vinous (90)
Medium red. Musky, slightly reduced aromas of raspberry and spices. Sweet and fine-grained, offering lovely racy acidity that avoids sharpness. Raspberry and mocha flavors are complicated by a mineral touch. Finishes with firm tannins and good lift.Inc. GSTSG$1,758.67 -
Wine Advocate (91-93)
The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Beaux Bruns has a lilting nose of wild strawberry and redcurrant, nonchalant and precise, though not powerful in any way. The palate is elegant and fresh with crisp tannins, red merging into dark berry fruit towards the finish that is nicely structured, understated and with a faint marine influence. I just adore how the terroir comes through here.Inc. GSTSG$1,834.97 -
Vinous (90-92)
Bright red with ruby tones. Crushed black fruits and cherry on the nose, lifted by notes of mint, rock and orange zest. Pliant but firm wine with thickness, clarity and lift. Sappy flavors of medicinal dark cherry, spices and red licorice display excellent balance and depth. A strong performance for this cuvée, from a crop that was off by 50% due to the frost. This reminded me of the superb 1993 bottling.Inc. GSTSG$2,216.47 -
Decanter (94)
This old vine cuvée from a 0.72ha parcel is typical of the domaine's style: feminine if you like, or just fragrant and elegant. Showing subtle reduction that promises a bright future in bottle, it's chalky, minerally and precise with focussed red fruit flavours and lacy tannins.Inc. GSTSG$426.09 -

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns 1er Cru has one of the most elegant bouquets from Ghislaine Barthod, offering beautiful, seductive red currant, crushed strawberry and crushed rose petal aromas. The palate is very well defined, with strict tannins framing dark berry fruit laced with soy and black pepper. A little introverted toward the finish. Very fine.Inc. GSTSG$336.71 -
Wine Advocate (92-94+)
Always one of the most immediate, charming wines in Barthod's range, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns is nonetheless especially elegant this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berry fruit, peonies, blood orange and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a beautifully pure, dynamic core of fruit, exquisitely refined tannins and a long, precise finish. It's a magical Beaux Bruns in the making.Inc. GSTSG$336.71 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns 1er Cru, which sees just a little new oak, has a fragrant, floral bouquet with wilted rose petals infusing the vibrant red fruit. Excellent delineation here, very elegant. The palate has a little more grip than the Chatelots, more salinity, particularly on the finish that displays a hint of black olive. Very fine.Inc. The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns 1er Cru has an attractive nose, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois, crushed stone and rose petals. It displays more vigour than the Chambolle-Charmes. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red cherry and strawberry fruit, desiccated orange peel and white pepper. Not complex yet it demonstrates more length than some of the other cuvées.Inc. GSTSG$262.58 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)
The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns 1er Cru has a deeper, richer, more tertiary nose than the preceding Aux Combottes. Touches of brown spice emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, good structure and complexity. This is a little sauvage and savory toward the lingering finish. It's not quite up there with the superlative 2022, but it will give 15 to 20 years of drinking pleasure.Inc. GSTSG$1,203.80 -

(6x75cl) 2016Vinous (89-91)
Bright, dark red; a bit less saturated than the Beaux-Bruns. Tight nose offers aromas of black fruits, menthol, licorice and black pepper, plus a piquant suggestion of blood orange. A bit more herbal and much more dominated by its structure than the Beaux-Bruns, showing a very primary quality as well as good saline minerality. Distinctly clenched today and showing little sweetness but there's very good energy and intensity here. Finishes with a firm spine of tannins and a slight dry edge. This is tough to judge today and clearly in an awkward phase of its evolution in barrel.Inc. GSTSG$3,225.75 -
Vinous (92)
Bright red-ruby. Subtly perfumed, very complex aromas of raspberry, strawberry, minerals, red licorice and exotic hints of apricot and grapefruit. The biggest and sweetest of these '96s; really lush and full, combining superb lingering sweetness with a large structure. The even tannins are thoroughly enrobed by thick, sappy red fruit. Very impressive.Inc. GSTSG$6,042.74 -

Deep red. Perfumed aromas of raspberry, cherry, spices and flowers. Offers compelling, penetrating, sweet flavors of small red fruits; initially quite creamy but closed up quickly in the glass. Dense but fresh. Finishes very long, spicy and firm, with suave tannins. Boasts superb fruit today, but this is likely to shut down in the bottle, perhaps for several years.Inc. GSTSG$4,642.09 -
Decanter (96)
Ghislaine Barthod's two parcels of Charmes are both in the more southerly part of the premier cru and can make one of the more reticent wines in her line up. That's far from the case here though, as this is all about rose petal and summer berry aromas with bright, vivacious acidity, subtle 30% new oak integration and a sweet, lingering finish.Inc. GSTSG$6,086.34 -
Wine Advocate (93-95+)
One of the more dramatic, gourmand cuvées in the range is the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes, a stunning wine that bursts with aromas of mulberries, raspberries, violets and rose petals, complemented by hints of loamy soil and baking chocolate. Full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, its rich, powdery tannins are entirely cloaked in an ample core of ripe but succulent fruit. I found it hard to resist.Inc. GSTSG$3,170.22 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
A light ruby purple. The bouquet is immediate and very seductive, doing its Charmes thing. Roses and red fruit, especially strawberry. Fills the mouth seductively, continuing through to a fine finish, not too much acidity, refined tannins, very agreeable. And excellent persistence. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. GSTSG$3,285.70 -
Vinous (90-92)
The Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots is big, rich and explosive. Here the fruit is dark in tone, with sweet, balsamic inflected notes that add complexity. The tannins are big and imposing, but also very nicely integrated. With time in the glass, the Chatelots becomes a bit more finessed, but never loses its essential intensity.Inc. GSTSG$2,789.75 -

The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Châtelots has an open, articulate nose that really expresses its terroir -- such fine mineralité here. The palate is strict and linear with dark berry/blackcurrant fruit, plenty of freshness and with a steely, precise finish that perhaps just needs a little more persistence. That may come by the time it is in bottle, but for now, it is the finesse that comes through in barrel.Inc. GSTSG$1,655.12 -

Opening in the glass with bright aromas of red berry fruit and orange rind, as well as bass notes of licorice and spices, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots is medium to full-bodied, layered and sumptuously textural, with a pure core of fruit, lively acids and a nicely defined finish.Inc. GSTSG$2,092.15 -

There are also just two barrels of the 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots 1er Cru this year, though this cuvée works better than the Aux Combettes at the moment. There is more fruit concentration on the nose with attractive blackcurrant, wild strawberry and briary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black cherry and strawberry fruit, fine mineralité and quite a deep, lightly grippy finish. Very fine.Inc. GSTSG$1,492.97 -
