Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Wipe your tears because this is the last vintage of Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru for now; the vines were pulled up after the harvest as production had tumbled to untenable levels, plus there was unacceptable soil erosion. The well-defined bouquet is intense with yellow plum, Mirabelle, crushed stone and wilted white flowers. The palate is very well-balanced with superb tension, focused and energetic with a saline finish. Bowing out in style.Inc. GSTSG$297.47 -

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)
Bright yellow. The nose suggests a wine with terrific inner-mouth tension: yellow peach, white flowers, menthol, minerals and crushed rock. Fatter than the Vergers in the mouth, with a seductive orange zest sweetness throughout, but kept firm and bright by piquant minerality. Quite tight on the long, aromatic back end. More austere than the Vergers, and not showing the early balance of that wine.Inc. GSTSG$1,535.22 -
Burghound (93)
(Sweet Spot Outstanding) A notably ripe and moderately exotic nose combines notes of pineapple, tangerine, lychee nut and floral, citrus and matchsticks hints. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the intense and much stonier middle weight flavors that also possess even better detail on the notably firm if not really austere finale that delivers superb length. This is excellent and while I am in general not really a fan of exoticism, this manages to work particularly well.Inc. GSTSG$254.96 -

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a minty/aniseed tinged bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. There is a very subtle reduction at play. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, and, again, rather reductive. But, there is plenty of matière in situ. Fine boned with a lightly spiced and reassuringly persistent finish developing more and more salinity with aeration. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.Inc. GSTSG$1,235.47 -

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a crisp, more understated bouquet with more earthy overtones that the domaine's other cuvées. The palate is one of the most terroir-expressive from the domaine, very well defined with a lightly spiced finish. This has a real spring in its step.Inc. GSTSG$1,333.57 -

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has wonderful terroir expression on the nose, very nicely balanced, touches of lemon verbena, white peach and a light walnut aroma. The palate is very taut and linear, a fine spine of acidity with impressive salinity, especially on the finish. Great length and poise, this may warrant a higher score in the future.Inc. The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a clean and precise bouquet, not intense, yet focused and gaining clarity with time. The palate is well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite saline with admirable persistence on the finish. This is worth seeking out.Inc. GSTSG$235.34 -

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has wonderful delineation and poise on the nose, real frisson, with yellow fruit, egg whites and wild peach. Love it! The palate is very well-balanced with a touch of reduction, elegant in style, perhaps needing more depth and grip on the finish. But this is very suave and nuanced.Inc. GSTSG$921.55 -

The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a very harmonious bouquet, fine mineralité and terroir expression and touches of oyster shell infusing the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with a rounded texture. There's a fine silver bead of acidity here, a little richer in style, fanning out marvelously on the finish. This is excellent.Inc. GSTSG$861.54 -

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru has a tight and rather recalcitrant bouquet that remains tight-lipped despite rigorous coaxing. The palate, meanwhile, is more open on the entry, offering lemon peel and orange zest, though I would like to see more depth and grip on the rather linear finish. Fine precision here, but it needs a little more matière.Inc. GSTSG$184.11 -

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru from vines located on the Saint-Aubin side on shallow soils, has wonderful mineralité on the nose, crushed rock filtering through the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, lively and spicy on the finish with veins of stem ginger. I love this...you will too.Inc. GSTSG$1,822.39 -

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru just misses the mineralité expressed by other cuvées on the nose - a little one-dimensional by comparison. The palate is better with fine "bite" on the entry, moderate depth, perhaps just needing a little more precision on the finish.Inc. GSTSG$932.45 -

The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru has a bright nose with yellow plum, white peach and light sea spray scents that opens beautifully in the glass. The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru, over towards the Santenay side, usually takes longer to ripen. The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Morgeot 1er Cru is certainly more flattering on the nose than the Clos Saint-Jean at the moment, with ebullient red berry and blueberry fruit, well-defined and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There’s plenty of fleshy red fruit with cracked black pepper and allspice towards the finish. Maybe the Domaine's strongest red this vintage. Very fine.Inc. GSTSG$740.55 -
