Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The excellent 2015 Echezeaux Grand Cru reveals a youthful bouquet of sweet red and black fruit, wood smoke, grilled squab and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and expansive, cutting a broad swathe, its tannins fine-grained and its fruit juicy and succulent, more structurally open-knit than the domaine's grands crus from Morey and Chambolle.Inc. The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru had been racked the day prior to my visit. That said, the bouquet is very well defined, offering black cherries, raspberry, rosemary and pressed rose petal aromas that blossom with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, good depth and precision, revealing bitter cherry and a touch of balsamic toward the finish. Very good potential.Inc. GSTSG$9,236.07 -

The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru has an endearing bouquet with predominantly red fruit, white pepper, a light ash-like bouquet that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, very saline, a little herbaceous with a stronly marine-influence towards the finish. I find the Beaux Monts has more finesse than this cuvée.Inc. A fresh and vibrant purple. 100% whole cluster. A sort of brioche reduction. Then it really develops on the palate, with a lifted vibrant red fruit, mainly raspberry, still some tannins behind, though the fruit covers them very nicely. Medium persistence. I can see Jeremy’s 2002 comparison for this wine. Drink from 2032-2040.Inc. GSTSG$7,377.64 -

Brilliant red. High-pitched aromas of raspberry, crushed stone and dusty brown spices. Creamy-sweet and juicy, with ripe fruit nicely leavened by a sappy, savory quality. Finishes with substantial broad, dusty tannins and excellent subtle, smoky persistence. Very promising.Inc. GSTSG$6,331.22 -
(1x75cl) 2011Vinous (91+)
Captivating aromas of pristine red fruits, minerals and underbrush, plus a whiff of porcini. Juicy and penetrating on the palate, with terrific high-pitched precision to the red raspberry and cherry flavors. Lovely cut here, as well as a tannic spine that calls for four or five years of aging. Jeremy Seysses noted that with the estate's clonal material, their grapes are riper. We start pulling leaves on the north side of the vines not long after the flowering, and we get thicker skins, he told me, adding that the estate's 2011s are tannic wines.Inc. GSTSG$848.65 -

The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes shows the pure power and intensity of the year in spades. Dark red stone fruits meld into expressive floral notes, but it is really the wine's energy, depth and textural finesse that stand out most. Readers can look forward to several decades of exceptional drinking.Inc. GSTSG$723.30 -

Dujac’s 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes is simply wonderful. For some reason, I don’t buy the Combottes regularly. Tasting this bottle makes me wonder why. Lifted, perfumed and sensual, with striking layers of dimension, the Combottes does what only Pinot can do, and that is convey richness without weight. Captivating and so inviting, the 2014 is fabulous on this night.Inc. GSTSG$842.46 -

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru has quite a stemmy bouquet beneath an attractive carapace of black and red fruit. It is certainly well defined, charming and full of character. The palate is detailed and structured, yet endowed with thrilling focus. There is still a little new oak to be assimilated, but the tannins are very fine and there is wonderful mineral tension all the way through to the classy, ever so slightly lactic finish. This will require several years in bottle, but it will reward those with patience. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.Inc. GSTSG$1,773.14 -

Good medium red. Lovely complex nose offers distinct floral lift to its aromas of cool cranberry, raspberry and rose petal. At once silky and bright, displaying superb intensity and definition to its juicy flavors of red berries, orange zest and spices. This impeccably balanced, vibrant wine--a classic manifestation of Jeremy Seysses' preference for light, delicate Pinots, finishes with rising floral persistence. Showing beautifully now, no doubt partly due to the fact that it was the first estate wine here to finish its malolactic fermentation.Inc. GSTSG$572.15 -
(1x75cl) 2017Vinous (92-94)
The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru, which was slightly affected by hail, albeit affecting the canopy rather than the bunches, has an appealing, pure, quite airy bouquet of raspberry, bilberry and blackberry, just a touch of brine/seaweed emerging with time in the glass. The palate is nicely focused with sappy red fruit, well-judged acidity, and orange peel and hints of brown spice on the finish. While not as persistent as the 2016, this has good potential and seems to gain depth with aeration.Inc. GSTSG$609.94 -

Sample 1: from a new barrel racked to a new barrel (thus not representative of the finished wine) Deep and rich in dark-red fruit. Peppery, spicy and creamy too. But a bit dry on the finish because of the new oak. Sample 2: from a different barrel More open on the nose, still lovely dark and lifted fruit. More peppery. Juicier and more aromatic. Great finesse both in the fruit and the tannins. Super-elegant and while it has 2018’s characteristic dark fruit, it has 2017 freshness and finesse.Inc. GSTSG$625.56 -
