Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Wine Advocate (95-97)
Matured entirely in new oak, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru has a beguiling, elegant bouquet that is beautifully defined with superb mineralité coming through with aeration. Nothing flamboyant, nothing overstated here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, very harmonious, with a svelte texture and it positively glides toward the pure sorbet-like finish. The small number of owners will be glad they have some of this nectar - for me, one of the wines of the vintage.Inc. GSTSG$4,068.05 -
Wine Advocate (95-97)
The 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru, around three barrels this year, is matured in 100% new oak and includes around 30% to 40% whole bunch fruit. It has a very energetic bouquet with intense, compelling undergrowth/sous-bois aromas, with hints of tree bark tincturing the blackberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and the fruit here soaks up that new wood easily, allowing the wine to maintain fine delineation and poise. Harmonious right to the finish; this is a very serious, very complex Chambertin with genuine aristocracy.Inc. GSTSG$1,835.46 -
Wine Advocate (95-97)
The 2015 Chambertin Grand Cru consists of three barrels this year, and is matured in 100% new oak and includes 50% whole bunch. It has a very clean and precise bouquet, more backward and broody than the Bonnes-Mares, the oak in the driving seat at the moment but with plenty of black fruit behind it. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannin, succulent black and red fruit with white pepper and spice box notes, a clinical thread of acidity that binds together a harmonious, almost understated finish. A case of 'less is more' here.Inc. GSTSG$2,870.96 -
Wine Advocate (94-96)
There is just one new barrel of the 2016 Chambertin Grand Cru instead of the usual three, using 50% to 60% whole bunch. It has a linear, strict and focused bouquet, not a flamboyant Chambertin, yet well defined with tightly coiled black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with very impressive complexity, pure and intense, mineral-driven with a sweet cassis-tinged finish that seems to go on forever. Excellent...but maybe not the best from Arnaud Mortet this year.Inc. GSTSG$2,696.56 -

Vinous (95-97)
The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru contains 40-50% whole bunches and is matured in 100% new oak (the only cuvée to do so.) It has quite an intense bouquet and as you would expect, the new wood is expressed as much as the fruit at the moment. With time, scents of tobacco and undergrowth emerge. The palate is very well balanced with grippy tannin, quite saline in the mouth with plenty of tightly-wound, detailed black fruit towards the lengthy finish. It will require several years in bottle but will be worth the wait.Inc. GSTSG$2,162.46 -
Vinous (95-97)
The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru is matured entirely in new oak with 40-50% whole-bunch fruit. It displays sublime purity on the nose, which offers layers of brambly red fruit mixed with crushed stone, pressed rose petals and freshly tilled soil. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and a perfect line of acidity. Tighter than the Mazis-Chambertin, with a precise and quite conservative finish. This is another profound Chambertin from Arnaud Mortet.Inc. GSTSG$2,178.81 -

This is one of those wines that just goes for it. It's other worldly. It is made entirely with Arnaud's twist on whole clusters: vendange enti re d coup e, or whole cluster with the stem cut out by hand. As with many things, it sounds "prettier" in French! It also sees 100% new oak. Layered in aromas and flavors, there are leather scents, exotic spices, field strawberries and more. There's a bit of woodsy grip, too, and the tannins definitely are firmer than the Bonnes Mares. The solid fruit core and elegant, lingering finish suggest that this has at least a few decades in it. 2025-45Inc. GSTSG$2,162.46 -
Vinous (96-98)
The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru is represented by three barrels this year, two new, with 50% whole bunches (pédicelles). It has superb mineralité and tension, full of electricity and breeding. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very harmonious with a silky texture, pixelated on the finish that feels so pure and ethereal. Simply, one of the best Chambertins in this vintage.Inc. GSTSG$2,043.64 -

The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns is an especially warm, generous 2008. It shows lovely depth in its open, expressive fruit. The balance and sense of harmony are first-rate. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.Inc. GSTSG$504.21 -

Good full red. Subdued, slightly medicinal nose hints at redcurrant and herbs. Ripe and supple but a bit youthfully simple today-or is it simply closed? Plenty of power here, but this seems less sweet than the Lavaux. Finishes with very good length.Inc. GSTSG$1,836.43 -

Crushed rose petals, mint, small red cherries and wild flowers are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2011 Clos de Vougeot. A wine of delicacy and finesse, the 2011 impresses for its nuance and transparency, all attributes that aren't always easy to find in Clos Vougeot. The lifted, aromatically expressive finish is particularly of note.Inc. GSTSG$652.81 -
(3x75cl) 2017Vinous (91-93)
The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru includes 30% whole bunches this year and matures in 75% new oak. It has a very pure, almost candied bouquet with strawberry tart, raspberry preserve and pressed rose petal aromas that are neatly entwined with the new wood. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannin, orange pith and brown spices infusing the layers of red fruit. Maybe it just misses a little personality compared to some of Mortet’s other 2017s, but it is still very well balanced and stylish.Inc. GSTSG$2,677.84 -

The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, which comes from Mortet's 0.32-hectares of 50-year old vines, is clean and precise on the nose, beautifully defined with pure Morello cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal and orange sorbet scents that are utterly seductive. Bright, moderately saturated medium red. Sexy perfume of raspberry, Asian spices, dried flowers, sandalwood and gentian root opened nicely in the glass. Spicy, fine-grained and vibrant on the palate; not especially sweet or fleshy but surprisingly fresh and easy to drink, showing lovely ripe acidity and excellent retention of fruit. This may not have the thickness of today's Mortet wines but it's just entering its plane of peak maturity. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and terrific spicy length. Arnaud Mortet noted that his father Denis aged this wine entirely in new oak.Inc. GSTSG$1,520.44
