Quite dry and reserved today, and distinctly saline in the middle palate, but ultimately less tight than the Vergers. Finishes with lovely energy and lift. Lovely silky wine with good depth of fruit; not exotic or tropical but not green either. Ultimately displays more dusty mineral tension and better balance than the Vergers. The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru, matured in 30% new oak, has a more Meursault-inspired bouquet that develops hints of hazelnut and nutmeg in the glass. The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru comes across tightly wound on the nose and requires coaxing, very flinty and with light bell pepper notes. You would almost think there is a touch of Sauvignon Blanc in the blend (there isn’t of course.) The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, though it does not quite deliver the verve or the comeliness of the preceeding Vergers and feels straightlaced on the finish. The 2016 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru comprises of three barrels instead of the usual five, although there is an additional barrel that comes from Philippe's parents from this vintage onward. It has a well-defined and quite fragrant bouquet with scents of citrus fruit, orange blossom, wet granite and a touch of sea spray. I would have liked just a little more vigor at this stage. The palate is very well balanced with neatly integrated oak from the two new barrels, good weight in the mouth with a spicy vein that emerges toward the tensile finish. The palate is very well balanced with neatly integrated oak from the two new barrels, good weight in the mouth with a spicy vein that emerges toward the tensile finish.
