Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)100% new wood. Solid bright purple, and on the chunky side. Massive, almost inky, a very dark fruit, the 2023 Clos de Bèze does not quite blossom on the palate as it has in some recent years. Despite the ripeness of the fruit, this feels a little introverted today, or perhaps a bit subdued behind its oak. Drink from 2033-2042. Tasted Nov 2024. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97-99)(5-Star Wine) 100% of both new wood and whole bunch vinification. The Clos de Bèze sits in its own tank apart from the rest of the wines. Must be a bit of a snob I suppose. A solid central core of purple, an imperial robe. Just a soupçon of oak on the nose but obviously the fruit is far more evident. There is indeed an immense weight of dark fruit on the nose, with the whole bunch pepper and spice woven throughout. Excellent weight and density. Rich red roses, along with a sensual dark raspberry, sensuality and structure beautifully interwoven. Drink from 2032-2045+. |

Vinous (94-96)The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is 100% new oak and 100% whole clusters. It has quite an intense bouquet with brambly red fruit, white pepper and forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, elegant and poised, white pepper notes with a harmonious, quite mineral-driven finish that incorporates the stems with style. Excellent. |

Vinous (94-96)Raised entirely in new oak with all its stems, the 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a tough job following the crystalline Les Amoureuses. Almost opaque at first, this whole bunch imparts a strong pepperiness, with a light charcoal scent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, taut and fresh with a slightly chalky textured, sorbet-fresh finish. Afford this 5-8 years in bottle. |

Vinous (94)The 2014 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is slightly deeper in colour than the Bonnes-Mares. It has a splendid bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, sous-bois and black truffle that blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine structure, good backbone here with a slightly savory, dried blood-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. There is just a hint of salted liquorish that pops up on the aftertaste. Excellent. Tasted at the Domaine. |

Vinous (93-96)(70% vendange entier; 100% new oak; these 80-year-old vines produced 37 hectoliters per hectare in 2013): Bright, dark red. Lovely pepper-and-spice lift to the aromas of red cherry, rose petal and licorice. Sappy and dense, with a captivating light touch and a compelling sweet/savory balance to the red fruit and licorice flavors. The very long finish features noble tannins and a building spiciness. A bit hard to taste today owing to a high level of carbon dioxide but looks to be brilliant. |

Vinous (93)Rich and explosive to the core, Groffier's 2011 Chambertin Clos de Bèze hits the palate with huge dark blue/purplish fruit, violets, menthol and cloves. Even with all of the intensity, power and voluptuousness, my preference is to drink the Groffier Burgundies sooner rather than later. The inclusion of 50% whole clusters adds complexity and dimension. This is an especially bold, fruit-driven Bèze, but it all works. |

Vinous (92-95)(aged in 100% new Francois Freres barrels): Deep red-ruby color. Cool, high-pitched aromas of blackberry, redcurrant, orange zest, licorice, pepper and cardamom. Large-scaled but primary and light on its feet; silky in texture but a bit hardened today by the CO2. Shows intriguing citrus peel notes: is it the excess gas or the cool site? Finishes firmly tannic, with a sexy spice character. Tricky to taste today: I would not be surprised if the finished wine rated a score at the top end of my projected range. |

Vinous (86-88)The 2018 Bourgogne Rouge, matured in two- or three-year-old oak barrels, has an attractive bouquet of generous mulberry and black currant aromas and a touch of wild hedgerow. Vinous (89)(bottled the day before my December visit, after spending a month in cuve; represents a yield of just 20 hectoliters per hectare): Bright red-ruby. Rather wild aromas of crushed cherry, black raspberry, blueberry and violet, plus a leathery nuance. Sweet and full for Bourgogne, conveying an almost chocolatey ripeness to its dark berry flavors. And yet this wine has a pH of just 3.22, according to Nicolas Groffier, who aged it with a lot of its lees and bottled it without fining or filtration. Groffier made just 15 barrels of this juice, versus a more typical 33 to 38. This 2015 boasts vibrant acidity and uncommon density for its appellation, but then this bottling is almost always an outperformer. |

Wine Advocate (85-87)The 2014 Bourgogne Rouge, from two vineyards, one tucked just below Clos Vougeot and the other in Morey Saint Denis in Chaponnières averaging around 50-years in age, had only just finished its malolactic fermentation. It has quite a tight black cherry and blueberry-scented bouquet, a hint of crushed violet in the background. The palate is bold and forthright with sappy black fruit, a nice saline touch in the mouth with a controlled, quite citrus-fresh finish. This is a Bourgogne Rouge with substance and in keeping with Groffier's upfront style. |

Robert Groffier Bourgogne Passetoutgrains 2022 epitomises the quintessential Burgundy craftsmanship. Cultivated in the heart of Bourgogne’s esteemed vineyards, this exquisite wine is a masterful blend of Pinot Noir grapes meticulously selected from sustainably managed terroirs. Under the expert guidance of vintner Robert Groffier, known for his dedication to traditional Burgundian techniques, the Passetoutgrains undergoes a delicate fermentation process in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving its vibrant fruit character. The wine is then aged for twelve months in French oak barrels, imparting subtle complexity and refined tannins. On the palate, it reveals a harmonious balance of ripe red berries, elegant floral notes, and a hint of earthy undertones, culminating in a long, graceful finish. Robert Groffier Bourgogne Passetoutgrains 2022 is a testament to the producer’s unwavering commitment to quality and the rich heritage of Burgundy, making it an exceptional choice for connoisseurs seeking sophistication and depth in every sip. |

This has a very delineated and pure bouquet. The stems are neatly assimilated; subtle scents of sous-bois and Earl Grey emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, taut and fresh, quite saline, like others, maybe missing the usual flamboyance and opulence on the finish, yet that is articulating the style of the growing season.
