Niellon's 2015 Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru is superb, opening with a lovely nose of pastry cream, preserved lemon, beeswax and toasted nuts, framed by new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and textural, with a glossy attack, a deep mid-palate, and a bright, lightly grippy finish. While this is a powerful, dramatic Chevalier Montrachet it's very nicely balanced.Inc. GSTSG$4,816.12 -

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St Marc 1er Cru is showing some reduction on the nose, like many of its NSG compadres. This seems to dissipate with aeration, although the nuance and detail of Gouges's Les Pruliers tasted alongside do not materialize. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, a little chewiness on the entry and good grip. There is a firmness here, a little obduracy that should be tamed with bottle age, so give it five years in the cellar, because there is potential. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.Inc. Healthy dark red with ruby highlights. Lovely floral, spicy high tones to the aromas of dark cherry and raspberry. Dark medium red. Ineffable nose combines tight, wild red berries, musky animal nuances and a hint of torrefaction, enlivened by hint notes of wild mint and white pepper. Densely packed and chewy; a distinctly masculine wine with outstanding intensity and underlying structure. And yet the texture is silky too. This utterly palate-saturating wine finishes with explosive rising notes of red berries, game, licorice, pepper, mint and saline minerality and great perfumed persistence. The crop level from these old vines and small berries was between 30 and 35 hectoliters per hectare, as Bernstein routinely does multiple green harvests here to ensure that the clusters finish at roughly the same level of potential alcohol. Incidentally, Bernstein attempted to ensure freshness in his 2015s by using 80% whole clusters to balance the ripeness of the fruit.Inc. GSTSG$4,781.54 -

Bright, dark red; a bit more saturated than the Mazis. Knockout, slightly liqueur-like aromas and flavors of dark raspberry, boysenberry, rose petal, licorice and mint, complicated by musky soil tones. Pure silk on the palate but with its uncanny thickness of texture leavened by energy. This wonderfully tactile, savory wine saturates every square millimeter of the palate and finishes with powerful medicinal reserve and incredible building length. And yet there's no impression of weightiness here. This could be enjoyed right now with the right piece of meat, but I'd rather lay it down for eight or ten years.Inc. GSTSG$3,724.24 -

Incidentally, Bernstein attempted to ensure freshness in his 2015s by using 80% whole clusters to balance the ripeness of the fruit. In BondSG$4,360.00 -
(3x75cl) 2015Vinous (97)
Bright, dark red; a bit more saturated than the Mazis. Knockout, slightly liqueur-like aromas and flavors of dark raspberry, boysenberry, rose petal, licorice and mint, complicated by musky soil tones. Pure silk on the palate but with its uncanny thickness of texture leavened by energy. This wonderfully tactile, savory wine saturates every square millimeter of the palate and finishes with powerful medicinal reserve and incredible building length. And yet there's no impression of weightiness here. This could be enjoyed right now with the right piece of meat, but I'd rather lay it down for eight or ten years. In BondSG$3,390.00 -
(6x75cl) 2015Vinous (94)
Moderately saturated bright red. Subtler on the nose than the Champeaux, showing a penetrating perfume to the aromas of raspberry liqueur and flowers. Plush, sweet and stuffed with red berries, spices and dried flowers, offering outstanding volume while maintaining its shape and avoiding any impression of heaviness. Quite spherical in the middle palate, then suave on the back end, finishing with late-arriving fine-grained tannins and resounding length. (This is a blend of Charmes and Mazoyères, from two different owners.)In BondSG$2,470.00 -

Bright, dark red. A sexy note of flinty reduction to the aromas of raspberry, mocha, brown spices, smoke and underbrush. Silky and fine-grained but with terrific energy and lift to its sappy flavors of raspberry, minerals and spices. This penetrating, vibrant wine finishes with a firm tannic spine and terrific palate-stimulating length and grip.In BondSG$3,365.00 -
Vinous (91-93)
Bright, dark red. Red raspberry and exotic spice aromas are accented by a peppery stem element. Juicier and tighter than the Chambolle Les Lavrottes, showing a more restrained sweetness owing to its pungent spice and herb qualities. But this very long, vibrant wine finishes with a touch of underbrush and superb rising perfume. Incidentally, Bernstein owns these vines, as well as those from which he makes his Mazis-Chambertin.In BondSG$1,950.00 -

The 2015 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a gorgeous, seductive, complex bouquet of intermingled layers of red and black fruit and touches of sous-bois, sage and rose petals. The palate is finely tuned and a little oaky at the moment, though the oak will be soaked up with time. This is well balanced, displaying a fine bead of acidity, impressive precision and a very persistent finish that is pure joy. An outstanding Mazis from Bernstein. The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers 1er Cru has a rich, almost decadent bouquet of billowing clementine, mango and vanilla aromas that are attractive but missing some definition. The palate is balanced, offering lime and orange zest and a pretty, slightly saline finish that lingers in the mouth; it lacks precision but there is satisfying length. The 2015 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a well-defined and focused bouquet. The oak initially feels loud, displaying toasty notes that admittedly marry well with the reduction, and then, magically, it coalesces and becomes more and more vivid and animated with aeration. The palate is very well balanced, and then flavors of mango, clementine and a touch of ginger reflect the precocity of the growing season. It feels a little heavy toward the finish, possibly with some botrytized fruit, but it develops precision with aeration. Very promising. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Burghound (92)
A more elegant and slightly more complex broad-ranging nose reflects an assortment of green apple, white flower, pear, mineral reduction and a wisp of oak. The overtly rich, full-bodied and powerful flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the moderately firm acid spine shaping the stony and saline-inflected finale. This too will need at least a few years of patience. In BondSG$281.00
We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
