The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussières includes a small proportion of whole bunch fruit. It has a harmonious bouquet with red cherries and pomegranate aromas. I appreciate the definition and precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp and crunchy red berry fruit, very natural in style, pure and tensile with a dash of spice on the finish. This should give ten years of pleasure, possibly more.Inc. GSTSG$2,264.98 -

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru la Perrière comes from purchased grapes, although Laurent Lignier controls the vineyard that is in its first year of conversion to biodynamie. It has a perfumed and floral bouquet with red cherries, redcurrant and crushed strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red berry fruit, tensile from the beginning with fine tannin and a pointed sorbet-fresh finish. This is very fine and may well eclipse the excellent 2014 la Perrière.Inc. GSTSG$1,170.07 -

Cropped at a modest 32 hectoliters per hectare, the 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes unfurls in the glass with an enticing bouquet of ripe cherries, dark chocolate, spices and espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a textural attack, excellent depth and dimension at the core and velvety structuring tannins. It's a real success in the gourmand style of the vintage.Inc. GSTSG$236.42 -

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Village, from the usual 11 parcels, has a tightly controlled red cherry and crushed strawberry bouquet with veins of dried rose petal. The palate is crisp on the entry with grainy tannin, beautifully balanced with a poised, winsome finish and a saline aftertaste. It eschews the usual heaviness that can pervade Chambolle premier crus this vintage with a sense of precision. This comes recommended.Inc. GSTSG$1,075.26 -

The 2015 Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru from Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is exceptional, bursting from the glass with notes of cherries, wild berries, exotic spice, dried flowers and orange rind. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and authoritative, built around a bright line of acidity and a fine-grained chassis of satiny tannins. The finish is long, fragrant and racy.Inc. The 2015 Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeot reveals attractive aromas of Griotte cherry, rose petal, dried flowers and orange rind, with little to hint at the savory nuances to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, sappy and transparent, its caressing, velvety attack segueing into a chalky mid-palate and finish. A very elegant rendition of this lovely climat below Les Amoureuses.Inc. GSTSG$1,464.37 -
Vinous (91-93)
Impressive dark ruby-red color. Slightly high-toned scents of blackberry, kirsch, crushed stone and licorice complemented by extravagant chocolate and mocha nuances. Strong and sweet on the attack, showing intense, high-toned dark berry, spice and licorice flavors, then firmer and more minerally on the back end, finishing with a serious spine of fine-grained tannins and excellent supporting acidity.Inc. (1x75cl) 2015Wine Advocate (94)
The 2015 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is excellent, opening in the glass with notes of peony, ripe cherries, briary fruits, potpourri, dark chocolate and coniferous forest floor—more wild in profile than Mugnier's other wines from Chambolle. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and deep, with impressive power and a long finish. This is quite a dramatic Bonnes Mares by Mugnier's standards, and the only criticism one could make is that it doesn't possess the ineffable sense of completeness that distinguishes his Amoureuses and Musigny. Discussing his Bonnes Mares, Mugnier notes that half of the vineyard was replanted in 1988 and a quarter in 1980. As these young vines reach age 30, he observes, they have become more Chambolle in character.Inc. GSTSG$3,083.51 -

(3x75cl) 2015Vinous (90-92)
(this was due to be bottled shortly after my visit): Bright, full yellow. Slightly exotic aromas of lemon, spices and banana complicated by fresh herbs. A distinctly fat, soft style of Chevalier-Montrachet in spite of its lemony fruit. A bit more serious and firm on the back end, finishing with stony and saline nuances. I'm not wild about this.Inc. GSTSG$2,441.27 -
Vinous (95+)
(13.8%; from 30- and 60+-year-old vines; 3-1/2 barrels made, versus just 1 in 2016): Bright dark red. Sappy, pure aromas of black and red fruits and pungent minerals lifted by a floral topnote. Wonderfully penetrating and smooth, displaying outstanding intensity and class to its fruit and savory mineral flavors. Offers a compelling combination of velour and weightlessness. Thick and seamless but still youthfully tight, this very pure wine finishes with superb subtle rising length. This very cool site can perform splendidly in hot years like 2015; indeed, the estate harvested these vines at the end, on September 11. But winemaker Gublin noted that the first vintage was 1996 and that the estate has never had a negative surprise, in either cold or hot years. I prefer this wine to the Chambertin for its suavity. And here the terroir (Domaine Prieur's vines are in Les Champs Traversins and Les Poulaillères) dominates the vintage character. A wine of great panache.Inc. GSTSG$1,024.50 -
(3x75cl) 2015Vinous (92-94)
(13.3% natural alcohol; about to be bottled): Bright, light yellow. Aromas of apricot, yellow grapefruit, apple and iodine. A distinct step up in intensity and cut from the Chevalier-Montrachet; higher-pitched and more energetic in the mouth, with its ripe apricot and citrus fruit flavors buoyed by excellent mineral support. This structured wine will need at least several years in bottle to express itself.Inc. GSTSG$4,432.74 -
(3x75cl) 2015Wine Advocate (94-96)
The 2015 Musigny Grand Cru perhaps somewhat predictably has the most sophisticated bouquet amongst Prieur's red wines, with mulberry and blackberry notes infused with cold stone and subtle sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin that feel quite bony at the moment, although it will mellow and gain more harmony. There is very fine focus on the finish with attractive salinity on the finish. Afford this a decade in the cellar if you can.Inc. GSTSG$3,985.84 -

Mugnier's 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is a terrific success in the 2015 vintage and is strongly reminiscent of the excellent 2005 rendition, opening in the glass with aromas of creamy cassis, ripe cherry, dark chocolate and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and sapid, with succulent acids, an ample chassis of rich tannins and excellent length. This is one of the rare cases of a great Burgundy from a great domaine that is available in some volume, and no one should fixate on Mugnier's Chambolles at the expense of this lovely Nuits.Inc. GSTSG$1,922.17 -
Burghound (89-92)
In contrast to the expressiveness of the Damodes this is aromatically timid and only aggressive swirling eventually coaxes an attractively complex nose of wood, cool and earthy dark berry fruit aromas that exhibit a whiff of the sauvage to reveal themselves. There is excellent richness to the subtly stony, rich and seductively textured medium weight flavors that also possess a taut muscularity on the mildly austere finale. This too could aptly be described as a classic Nuits.Inc. GSTSG$460.42 -

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a detailed, precise bouquet, very pure with ripe dark cherries, kirsch, orange sorbet and subtle graphite aromas. It is one of the classiest that you will come across from this ancient vineyard this year. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin that feel a little fuller and suppler than the premier cru Vosne-Romanées. Grippy in the mouth with an effervescent finish, this is a long-term Clos de Vougeot that will age effortlessly over 20-30 years.Inc. GSTSG$503.48 -

Tasted blind, the 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru also put in a superb performance, bursting from the glass with an expressive bouquet of dark wild berries, cola, orange rind, dried flowers and espresso. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, lavish and dramatic, with a broad attack, a deep and juicy core of fruit, satiny structuring tannins and a long, fragrant and already sapid finish. It's one of the finest renditions of Echézeaux to be found this year.Inc. GSTSG$4,096.72 -

This is riper still with liqueur-like dark berry fruit aromas that are liberally laced with spice, earth and game nuances. There is outstanding richness and volume to the seductively textured mid-palate that contrasts markedly with the firm, serious and ever-so-mildly rustic finale that is very Nuits in character.Inc. GSTSG$324.36 -
Burghound (91-93)
As it should, this presently has an entirely different aromatic profile with its ripe and fresh combination of earth and sauvage characters together with both red and dark currant scents. Here too there is really lovely mouth feel to the tautly muscular flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the energetic, detailed and beautifully persistent finish. This is also admirably seamless and should amply reward extended keeping.Inc. GSTSG$1,255.11 -

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Lavières, located just under Aux Murgers and matured in 20% new oak, has an engaging, floral bouquet with dark berry fruit, just a hint of blood orange and cola emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, plenty of edgy red berry fruit, a gentle but insistent grip in the mouth with impressive persistence on the finish, especially for a village cru. This comes recommended.Inc. GSTSG$224.08 -

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a wonderful, expressive bouquet, once you get past just a touch of reduction. Black cherries, raspberry and crushed stone all vie for attention, and the oak is very nicely integrated. The palate is sweet and generous on the entry, and super-fine tannins frame a mineral-driven, supremely well focused finish that lingers in the mouth. Top class. Like the 2015 Les Beaux Monts, there is wondrous focus and precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin. This is full of energy and tension, with a killer line of acidity and wonderful structure and precision towards the mineral-rich finish. It will require several years in bottle, but it has the substance and complexity to repay patience.Inc. GSTSG$613.21 -
Discover a bottle of Jean Marc Vincent Auxey Duresses Bretterins 2015, a sophisticated expression of the Burgundian terroir. Revered for its excellence, this red wine is produced by skilled winemakers Jean Marc and Anne-Marie Vincent, in the picturesque village of Auxey-Duresses in Burgundy, France. The Vincents have practised meticulous, small-batch, biodynamic viticulture since 1997, with an unwavering commitment to quality. This particular vintage is biodynamically made from the estate's old vines, yielding a complex mineral character layered with spicy, red fruit notes. Aged in fine-grained French oak barrels, Jean Marc Vincent Auxey Duresses Bretterins 2015 offers an exquisite palate experience - a crescendo of raspberry, cherry, and earthy undertones. Its balanced acidity and lingering finish make it a stellar companion to a variety of dishes. We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
