Tasted blind, the 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées also put in a superb performance, unfurling in the glass with an attractive bouquet of ripe red berries, incense and candied peel, framed by a touch of light reduction that segues into sapid bass notes of smoked duck. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, lavish and multidimensional, with supple tannins, a dramatic core of fruit and succulent underlying acids. This is a very promising Brûlées from Domaine d'Eugénie.Inc. GSTSG$427.55 -
Vinous (95)
Bright, full red. Ineffable aromas of raspberry, rose petal and minerals display wonderful perfumed lift for the year. Silky, concentrated and fine-grained on entry, then sharply delineated and perfumed in the middle palate, boasting superb floral lift and an impression of menthol reserve to its black raspberry, crushed stone and botanical herb flavors. A wonderfully savory, silky midweight with terrific energy and restrained sweetness for the year, not to mention noble, perfectly buffered tannins. The savory, slowly building finish is hard to scrape off your palate. This outstanding 2015 really stands out for its light touch.Inc. GSTSG$4,047.67 -
Vinous (94-97)
(made from same plot of 60+-year-old vines on the Chambertin side of this grand cru as in the past; 100% destemmed): Bright dark red. Raspberry and a touch of reduction on the nose. Then dense, sappy and high-pitched in the mouth, with terrific intensity and saline complexity to the intense red berry flavors. Notes of menthol and crushed stone contribute to an impression of youthful tightness. Harder to taste today than the classic Clos de Bèze, which is showing more energy and salty minerality in the early going. But this is subtler and longer on the aftertaste, with a distinctly floral, feminine character that reminded me of a great Chambolle-Musigny. Very different in style from Faiveley's basic Clos de Bèze, but is it better?Inc. GSTSG$2,973.32 -

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns from Joseph Faiveley is notably reduced on the nose, notes of raspberry, cherry and candied peel only emerging with extended aeration. On the palate, the wine is sappy, medium to full-bodied and a bit dried out from its reduction which renders it rather inscrutable, though the raw materials seem to be good. If this shakes off its reduction as it ages it may end up being very good, but my instinct is that it is a sadly stillborn Chambolle.Inc. GSTSG$995.69 -
Burghound (92-95)
Earthy red berry fruit aromas trimmed in a discreet touch of wood spice are laced with earth, forest floor and violet hints. The full-bodied and tautly muscled broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent power and detail on the stunningly long, mildly rustic and youthfully austere finish. This is quite serious and clearly very structured yet it stops short of being overtly old school in style; that said, this will not be an early drinker.Inc. GSTSG$1,464.37 -
James Suckling (97)
I'm amazed! This is extremely fresh with orange zest and smoky notes, as well as intense cherry aromas. With its stunning concentration and vitality, this could wake the dead! A great and dynamic expression of this unique terroir that could be drunk now, but it also has a huge future ahead of it.Inc. GSTSG$1,725.97 -
Vinous (90)
Bright dark red. Slightly reduced, youthfully medicinal aromas of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Surprisingly rich and sweet on the palate if a bit reduced, offering rather soft, pliant flavors of black cherry, dark berries, menthol and minerals. Finishes with plush, horizontal tannins and very good length. Quite plush in the style of 2015 but I wanted a bit more structure and reserve. Still a bit reduced.Inc. GSTSG$1,219.12 -
Vinous (93-96)
(just a single new 150-liter barrel of this wine, vinified with 50% whole clusters): Bright, dark red. Captivating aromas of raspberry, coffee, mocha and pistachio. Plush, dense and deep, conveying more saline minerality and deep soil tones than primary dark fruits in the early going. But this wine boasts compelling sweetness and finishes with dusty, thoroughly ripe tannins and outstanding length. (Incidentally, Faiveley will actually have two different bottlings of Musigny from the 2015 vintage as they purchased a tiny parcel of vines from the Dufouleur family just after the harvest of 2015. The new wine will be bottled in magnums, which Faiveley plans to open in 2025 as part of the family's 200th-anniversary festivities. Beginning with 2016, there will be a single estate Musigny consisting of about 600 bottles.)Inc. GSTSG$13,562.67 -
Vinous (90+)
Bright medium red. Cool, vinous nose offers aromas of black cherry, cassis, blackberry, menthol and licorice. Densely packed, dry and youthfully imploded. A distinctly chewy wine whose youthfully bound-up, slightly tough character belies the vineyard's proximity to Vosne-Romanée. Less sweet than the Chaignots; more backward and savory, with its firm, dusty tannins in need of patience.Inc. GSTSG$953.16 -
(6x75cl) 2015Wine Advocate (89-91)
The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Clos le Village, picked 5 and 6 September with 20% whole bunch fruit, has a broody, introspective bouquet at first, tightly wound mulberry and blackberry fruit, a little earthy with undergrowth aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, the whole bunch not noticeable here, apart from a slight textural graininess towards the kirsch and soy-tinged finish. Whilst I prefer the Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes, this remains a fine contribution to the vintage and it should age with style.Inc. GSTSG$994.52 -
(6x75cl) 2015Vinous (86)
The 2015 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru has a bold and generous but smudged nose that lacks real complexity. The palate is chewy and dense, displaying moderate grip and a very conservative finish that feels a little sterile and tastes of sour cherries. Not my cup of tea. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.Inc. GSTSG$1,284.52 -
Vinous (89-91)
Bright lemon-yellow color. Restrained aromas of mirabelle, yellow flowers and clove. Brisk but not hard, offering a lovely sugar/acid balance to its intense lemon zest and spice flavors. Finishes with good cut but a touch of youthful rigidity. These vines were originally planted in the 1950s but a lot of them have been replaced through the years.Inc. GSTSG$960.79 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)
Bright yellow. The nose suggests a wine with terrific inner-mouth tension: yellow peach, white flowers, menthol, minerals and crushed rock. Fatter than the Vergers in the mouth, with a seductive orange zest sweetness throughout, but kept firm and bright by piquant minerality. Quite tight on the long, aromatic back end. More austere than the Vergers, and not showing the early balance of that wine.Inc. GSTSG$1,535.22 -
Wine Advocate (92-94)
The 2015 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, which came in at around 13.5% alcohol, has a lovely nose with scents of lemon curd, apricot blossom and cold limestone, a touch of mango emerging with time. The palate is extremely well balanced with a fine line of acidity. There is energy and tension here, tightening up towards the finish but still persistent in the mouth. This has great potential, a reserved Criots that should spread its wings once in bottle.Inc. GSTSG$665.89 -
Wine Advocate (95)
Tasted blind, Jean-Marie Fourrier's distinctive fingerprint was immediately recognizable in the 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques, a beautiful wine that soared from the glass with a projected bouquet of wild berries, peonies, orange rind and subtle currant leaf. Medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, it's a concentrated, fleshy wine with considerable mid-palate depth and dimension, structured around fine, even melting tannins and concluding with a long, intense finish.Inc. GSTSG$5,709.92 -
Vinous (89-90)
Bright dark red. Very fresh aromas of blueberry and menthol plus a hint of game. Concentrated and seamless, with its crushed purple fruit flavors complicated by a suggestion of fresh blood. Offers a lovely combination of thickness and acidity and finishes with a firm tannic spine. This cool site did very well in 2015.Inc. GSTSG$278.93 -

We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
