Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Hameau de Blagny from Domaine de Chérisey was showing more oak on the nose than the Sous le Puits from Jean-Claude Bachelet that was poured directly before it. It does not quite have the same terroir definition. The palate is slightly bitter on the entry with moderate weight; however, this bottle did not quite convey the mineralité expected. Another bottle that was offered at the domaine when I last visited and subsequently tasted at home showed much better than this, with far more nervosité and tension, a live-wire sense of energy you would expect from these vines that lie higher up the slope. My score reflects this second, more representative bottle.Inc. GSTSG$356.32 -

Deep red-ruby. Tight but tangy scents of black fruits, crushed stone, minerals and licorice, plus an exotic suggestion of white stone fruits. Wonderfully sappy, precise and energetic, conveying an impression of density without weight. This silky, refined wine is still a baby but its ripe, granular tannins and finishing juiciness suggest it will be a beauty with six or eight years of cellaring.Inc. GSTSG$261.14 -

Good dark red. Distinctly dark aromas of black fruits and violet. Brisk and penetrating, with a strong mineral spine accentuated by the use of stems. Vinous (90+)
(from Mazoyères-Chambertin; vinified with 80% whole clusters): Bright red. Reticent aromas of black cherry and licorice. Uncompromisingly dry on the palate but with noteworthy juicy intensity to the flavors of dark fruits and dried flowers. Not a particularly pliant or fleshy style--in fact a bit tough in the early going--but its rising perfume suggests that it will reward cellaring. Today the dusty tannins are accentuated by the influence of the stems, which limits the wine's sweetness.Inc. GSTSG$1,909.11 -

Spicy, firm-edged and tight; leaner and more imploded than the Charmes-Chambertin but already shows superb intensity and inner-mouth aromatic lift. The 2014 Beaune 1er Cru Grèves was fully destemmed. It has an earthy, damp woodland-scented bouquet that infiltrates the red berry fruit, perhaps just a little rustic for a Beaune Grèves, but full of character. The palate is medium-bodied with good density and edgy red fruit with earthy tones coming through on the slightly conservative finish. I probably just prefer the Beaune Perrières this year.Inc. Bright yellow. Very ripe aromas of lemon oil, grilled nuts, toasted bread and brown spices. Fat, rich and very ripe, with mineral and spice flavors accented by lemon zest, lime and lavender. This initially struck me as weightier and less classic than the 2015, but the wine's strong spine of stony acidity gives it terrific penetration and really frames and extends the fruit on the long finish. Still, this big, smooth wine is showing beautifully today. Winemaker Sieve notes that the south/southeast exposition of the vines gives this wine a crunchy fruit character along with considerable weight.Inc. GSTSG$761.37 -

(with an average age of 55 years, these vines produced 35 hectoliters per hectare in 2014): Ripe but tight nose hints at white peach, citrus fruits, flowers, rock and clove muted by sulfur, plus a touch of lichee. Very rich and thick, with the distinct creamy intensity of old vines, but not at all exotic in spite of the noteworthy sweetness to its stone and citrus fruit flavors. This wine really spreads out to saturate the palate on the long aftertaste, which features a lingering note of sweet macadamia nut.Inc. GSTSG$380.30 -

The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans was fully destemmed this year. I like the definition here, vibrant with red cherry and redcurrant that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied and tightly wound. It feels quite masculine with a chalky texture finish; there is good backbone and extraction. Give this 3-4 years so that it becomes less Pommard and more Volnay.Inc. GSTSG$862.63 -

The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts Christianne is vinified exactly the same way as the regular Malconsorts, and to be honest, I find that the aromatics are very similar. The difference is more on the palate with a touch more richesse and depth, but a similar taste profile. It just fans out with more conviction on the finish, although in a strange way I like the nervosité and detail of the regular bottling. It will be interesting to see how its develops.Inc. There are 8 barrels of the 2014 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru this year, five of them new. The bouquet demanded encouragement from the glass and it retains a sense of broodiness and introspection. This is holding everything back, although one can see that it leans more to the black side of the fruit spectrum compared to redder Corbeaux. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, quite succulent tannin, but as always there is real elegance and poise here. It clams up a little towards the finish, just leaves the door open ajar, but sufficient to notice its impressive structure with a tingle of black pepper on the aftertaste. It will need several years in bottle, but it will be worth the wait.Inc. GSTSG$780.33 -

The 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru, around three barrels this year, is matured in 100% new oak and includes around 30% to 40% whole bunch fruit. It has a very energetic bouquet with intense, compelling undergrowth/sous-bois aromas, with hints of tree bark tincturing the blackberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and the fruit here soaks up that new wood easily, allowing the wine to maintain fine delineation and poise. Only native yeasts have been used in this traditionally fermented Pinot Noir, resulting in an authentic expression of the varietal. Reflecting the vineyard's distinct terroir, the 2014 vintage offers a symphony of red fruit notes, musk, and spice, balanced with soft tannins and an elegant profile. This fine wine exhibits a refined complexity that promises a remarkable tasting experience, fully capturing the essence of a storied French vineyard - indeed, a testament to David Duband's wine-making prowess.

I probably just prefer the Beaune Perrières this year.In BondSG$172.00 -

Winemaker Sieve notes that the south/southeast exposition of the vines gives this wine a crunchy fruit character along with considerable weight. In BondSG$682.00 -

This wine really spreads out to saturate the palate on the long aftertaste, which features a lingering note of sweet macadamia nut.In BondSG$339.00 -

Give this 3-4 years so that it becomes less Pommard and more Volnay. In BondSG$732.00 -

(100% vendange entier; 35% new oak): Good medium red. Subdued aromas and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, earth and smoky minerality accented by hints of pepper and herbs from the stems. Broad, ripe and smooth but quite dry. Displays very good spicy energy, length and lift but the substantial dusty tannins leave the finish a bit clenched today. This slightly edgy wine will need patience. In BondSG$929.00 -

It will be interesting to see how its develops. In BondSG$3,020.00 -

It will need several years in bottle, but it will be worth the wait.In BondSG$706.00 -

Harmonious right to the finish; this is a very serious, very complex Chambertin with genuine aristocracy. In BondSG$1,675.00 -

(70% new oak; 15% vendange entier): Deep, bright red. Deep, smoky scents of dark raspberry, game and minerals. Juicy and very intense but youthfully imploded, conveying the sappiness of the vintage in spades. A wonderfully taut, mineral-driven Lavaux with a sappy, saline character to its dark berry fruit. Finishes rich and firmly tannic, with terrific lingering perfume. In BondSG$2,245.00 -

The 2014 vintage in Burgundy has been rung in with a great deal of local optimism and excitement. After three successive vintages of incredibly low yield and quantities, the growers of the Cote de Nuits were ready to welcome an easy vintage and the chance to make a bit more wine. Easy seemed to be the word on everyone's lips as the growing season presented few climatic challenges and viticultural decisions were by and large straightforward.
Tasting the wines from barrel, we quickly learned that the reds were easy to taste, forward and classical, while the whites were truly remarkable. More than one winemaker came forward to declare that 2014 saw the best white wines in a lifetime. Good levels of acidity kept the bundles of ripe fruit lovely, while the overall character of the vintage was in such good balance that the wines will be approachable from a relatively young age, while the best will age very well indeed.
In general the Cote de Nuits fared a bit better than the Cote de Beaune by virtue of having escaped the savage hail which effected the latter. As much as the hail devastated yields, it fortunately did not impact on quality and many producers managed to make some truly exceptional wines with great forward fruit and firm structure.
Overall this is a vintage with a lot to offer and for Burgundy lovers, it is one to celebrate. Each appellaton was true to style and the winemakers had room to impart their own subtle influence on the finish product. Freshness, flavour and verve are the keyword this year and they come together in bundles.
