Wine Advocate (92)The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques was cropped on October 12, entirely destemmed and underwent a 20-day maceration, spending 13 months in oak. It has a wonderful bouquet: very well defined with forest floor, soy and brambly red berry fruit. There is very good intensity here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good depth and harmony with a crisp, white pepper-dashed finish. There is already a sense of completeness here and will be well worth seeking out when released in the spring. It has the hubris to outperform both the Charmes-Chambertin and Clos-de-Bèze! |

Burghound (95)An elegant, pure and broad-ranging nose is composed of very fresh, cool and airy aromas of both red and dark currant, spice and earth scents where the wood treatment is admirably subtle if again not invisible. There is a lovely mouth feel to the attractively intense and well-concentrated flavors that coat the palate with dry extract before culminating in a refined, well-balanced and beautifully persistent finish. Like the Griotte this is an overtly robust and powerful wine that will require an even longer snooze in a cool cellar. |

Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is located in the lieu-dit of Mazis-Bas, between the vines of Bernard Dugat (Dugat-Py) and Domaine Maume. Matured in 90% new oak it has a fine clarity on the nose, the oak a little prominent, but that will meld together with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black fruit mixed with blueberry, vanilla and a slither of marmalade. This is quite opulent but it remains nicely controlled with a long finish that is in the same style as Bernard Dugat’s Mazis. This is a knockout wine from Roty, a vin de garde that demands considerable cellaring. |

Wine Advocate (91-93)Due to be bottled the following week, the 2013 Volnay 1er Cru les Champans has a flattering bouquet of redcurrant, cranberry and pomegranate fruit interlaced with undergrowth aromas that lend it a slightly rustic feel. The palate is medium-bodied with red cherries, orange rind and a hint of marmalade. It needs just a little more harmony on the finish but that should come with bottle age. The persistence at the moment is very promising…I can still feel this a minute after the wine has departed. |

Wine Advocate (97)Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 La Grande Rue Grand Cru has a backward and broody bouquet, very complex with hints of woodland, damp earth and fern filtering through the tightly wound red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and very fine, almost filigree tannins. The acidity is beautifully judged here -- very focused and refined, seamless towards the sophisticated finish. This is one of the best vintages of La Grand Rue that I have tasted, which is a considerable achievement given that this was not an exemplary growing season. Tasted September 2016. |

Burghound (93-96)Here the nose is restrained to the point of being all but mute and only aggressive swirling coaxes the grudging aromas of pear, white peach, apricot, acacia blossom and discreet menthol nuances. As is usually the case there is more size, weight and muscle to the medium weight plus flavors that possess a hint of bitter lemon on the massively long finish. What I find interesting about the 2013 Bâtard is not only that it is more elegant then usual but also that it manages to deliver so much volume and power without any appreciable weight. In a word, brilliant. |

Burghound (94-97)Like the Puligny villages the expressive nose plays right on the edge of exoticism with its dried yellow orchard fruit elements that add breadth if not necessarily elegance to the citrus, floral, spice and discreet herbal tea nuances. There is absolutely stunning intensity to the ultra-precise and stony flavors that are akin to rolling small rocks around in the mouth, all wrapped in a saline and kaleidoscopically complex finish that reminds me a great deal of a grand cru Chablis with its compact and linear finish. This is breathtakingly good though note well that it's going to require a long snooze in a cool cellar as this is nowhere near ready and I very much doubt that it will be young. |

Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Beaux Monts has great clarity on the nose, here veering more toward red fruit than the les Brulées, with subtle wet limestone and granitic scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied, very “gourmand” in the mouth, the kind of wine you don’t know whether to drink or eat (not in terms of texture but the flavors). There is a lovely meaty note that surfaces on the long finish. Tres bon vin! |
