Mid crimson – not an eye-catching grand cru intensity of colour. Heady nose with the merest suggestion of decay. Masses of sweetness and still a bit of dusty tannin and introspection. The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has quite a meaty nose, featuring plenty of brambly red fruit, desiccated orange peel and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with a sorbet-fresh entry. This is a more zesty Chambertin, lively and even a little tart toward the finish. Does it convey the substance of this noble vineyard? I’m not convinced, and that is perhaps reflective of the vintage, yet after 15 minutes it seems to gain extra layers of complexity, and it's only then you realize that this is the real deal. It loses a bit of finesse and complexity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, lightly spiced, quite muscular in style with a flattering finish. The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru was one of a handful of crus out of sorts from barrel but now in bottle, I am happy to report that it is a completely different wine. It has a delectable bouquet with beautifully defined red berry fruit, wild hedgerow and wilted rose petal that unfolds so delicately in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crunchy red fruit, crisp and saline. There is just a touch of soy in the background that lends it an almost Oriental finish. It has a delectable bouquet with beautifully defined red berry fruit, wild hedgerow and wilted rose petal that unfolds so delicately in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crunchy red fruit, crisp and saline. There is just a touch of soy in the background that lends it an almost Oriental finish.
