Vinous (89-92)
(from 93-year-old vines): Bright red. Reticent aromas of redcurrant, cherry and leather. Concentrated and densely packed, but with lively minty lift to the savory red fruit flavors. A note of medicinal red cherry contributes to the wine's taut impression. Finishes complex, juicy and long, with considerably sweeter, more refined tannins than those of the Aigrots. The Lafarges pulled up one-quarter of these very old vines after the 2014 harvest and will replant them in 2017.They were really killed by the three years of hail, noted Frédéric Lafarge.Inc. Vinous (91-93)
The 2019 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru comes from the oldest vines at the Domaine, 98 years old, that produced small yields according to Frédéric Lafarge. It has a beautiful, very pure kirsch and crushed strawberry nose laced with orange pith. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy red berry fruit that hide the structure underneath. More saline than Lafarge’s other cuvées it is very grippy on the finish. Excellent.Inc. GSTSG$2,102.39 -

(6x75cl) 2018Vinous (89-90)
The 2018 Bourgogne Pinot Noir offers black cherries, raspberry and light floral notes on the nose, which is quite pure in style and finely delineated. The harmonious palate is underpinned by fine tannins and vivid red fruit on a finish so approachable that you could drink it directly from any one of its used barrels.Inc. GSTSG$374.31 -
(1x75cl) 2020Vinous (86-88)
The 2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir has quite a backward nose, darker fruit than some of its peers, though well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, good backbone here, also quite "strict" in style (in a Pommard kinda way). This might age better than you think.Inc. GSTSG$98.73 -
Vinous (85-87)
The 2021 Bourgogne Pinot Noir has an uncomplicated earthy, sous-bois-infused bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, but I find this a little dry on the finish at the moment. This needs a bit of a pep-up.Inc. GSTSG$295.83 -
(1x75cl) 2009Vinous (91-94)
The 2009 Pommard Pezerolles emerges from the glass with freshly cut roses, raspberries and sweet spices. This is an utterly refined Pommard. There is plenty of energy and vigor, but the fruit has more than enough pedigree and depth to stand up to the tannins. This is the estate's smallest cuvée; in 2009 there are only two barrels.Inc. GSTSG$622.28 -
(12x75cl) 2005Vinous (90+)
Deep, saturated red with ruby tones. Reticent but pure aromas of black cherry, bitter chocolate and mint. Sweet and silky on entry, then concentrated and lively in the middle, offering very ripe but vibrant flavors of blackberry, licorice and spice. Finishes very long, with a medicinal reserve and excellent thrust. Remains light on its feet in spite of the power of the vintage.Inc. GSTSG$2,761.84 -
Vinous (96)
Exotic notes dominated the 2002 Lafarge Volnay Clos des Ducs, especially in the bouquet. Both Volnays were open for business and drinking beautifully.Inc. GSTSG$645.17 -
(6x75cl) 2010Vinous (93-95)
The 2010 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs is built on a serious core of fruit. This is an especially powerful, structured Volnay that impresses for its depth and muscle. Dark tonalities of fruit meld into spices, licorice and menthol as the aromas and flavors gain volume in the glass. A plush, resonant finish rounds things out in style. This is an utterly impeccable Volnay from Lafarge.Inc. GSTSG$5,721.85 -
Vinous (95-97)
The 2017 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs is completely de-stemmed by hand this year, which took just over 30 hours according to Frédéric Lafarge. It has a very pure bouquet with redcurrant, wild strawberry, crushed stone and light rose petal aromas, more feminine than the Clos des Chênes but just as captivating. The palate is packed full of energy and vivacity, superb tension running from start to finish with the mineralité flooding across the entrancing finish. Outstanding. Very pure and given that nascent energy, a long-term prospect.Inc. GSTSG$364.69 -
(12x75cl) 2018Vinous (95-97)
The 2018 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs 1er Cru was de-stalked by hand, a practice incepted with the 2016 vintage. It demands more coaxing from the glass, but reveals wonderful violet-infused red currant, cranberry and wild cherry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins and great depth but gentle grip. This is your quintessential iron fist in a velvet glove. Wonderful spiciness lingers for more than 60 seconds on the finish. Stunning.Inc. GSTSG$5,006.33 -

Wine Advocate (94-96+)
The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs is liable to overshadow even the emblematic Clos des Chênes this year. Offering up a profound bouquet of blackberries, sweet spices, rose petals, orange rind, summer truffles and forest floor, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and immensely concentrated, with lively acids, abundant but almost imperceptible tannins and a long, saline finish.Inc. (12x75cl) 1997Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88-91)
Medium red. Brighter, more perfumed aromas of cherry, tobacco and leather. Less sweet and more serious in the mouth, with a larger structure and better clarity of flavor. But here the dusty tannins come across as less sweet. Frederic Lafarge, incidentally, prefers the Chateau des Ducs today, saying that it's more representative of the '97 vintage.Inc. GSTSG$7,595.99 -
Vinous (93)
Good dark red with ruby tones. Very sexy, mellow scents and flavors of raspberry, plum, spices and truffley underbrush. Wonderfully broad and full but fresh as well; at once tangy and savory in the mid-palate, spreading out to saturate the entire mouth. Very ripe but not particularly sweet, finishing with broad, dusty, very fine-grained tannins and terrific length. Frédéric Lafarge described 1999 as an immense vintage and he wasn't just speaking about yields, which in the case of this wine was a very reasonable 39 hectoliters per hectare.Inc. GSTSG$4,650.46 -
Vinous (93)
Good deep red-ruby color. Black fruits, violet and pepper on the nose, with a suggestion of oak spice. Large-scaled, lush and vinous, with full but juicy flavors of dark berries and violet. This, too, boasts lovely restrained sweetness. A wine of huge phenolic material, with the dusty tannins coating the entire palate. Here's a 2003 that calls for a good decade of aging and may well evolve in bottle for 20 years or more.Inc. GSTSG$339.62 -
(6x75cl) 2005Vinous (95+)
Full ruby-red. Pure, complex but restrained nose offers blackberry, black cherry, licorice, spices and black pepper. Wonderfully intense and vibrant, with a compellingly chewy texture and great thrust to the highly concentrated dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. The fine-grained tannins spread out to saturate the palate of this powerfully structured Volnay, with the wine's perfume lingering in the mouth for minutes. I asked Frederic when the estate last made a Clos des Chenes as good as this, and he replied that it's the best since the '61. Extended bottle aging may well bring an even higher rating. Volnay doesn't get much better than this.Inc. GSTSG$3,952.86
