Wine Advocate (93-95)Virgile Lignier regards this vineyard as the quintessential premier cru of the appéllation. The 2015 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Faconnières, which includes 40-50% whole bunches, has a very complex and sophisticated bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, very precise and detailed with black cherries, raspberry preserve, dried rose petals and tangible cold stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well-judged acidity that imbues this premier cru with heightened harmony and focus. It flows towards the finish with wonderful tension and frisson on the finish. This is an outstanding Morey-Saint-Denis from Virgile. |

Vinous (92)(13.2% alcohol; vinified with 80% whole clusters; from 70- and 53-year-old vines that produced 43 hectoliters per hectare): Good dark red. Offers another dimension on the nose, with its aromas of dark cherry, raspberry and soil lifted by floral high tones. Harmonious acidity gives lovely juicy definition and lift to the wine's intense cherry and dark raspberry fruit. Quite refined for a wine from this cellar. Really perfumes the mouth and rises on the finish, which features firm but smooth tannins and lovely lift. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Faconnières 1er Cru shows a little reduction on the nose; underneath there is red currant and cranberry fruit, and a touch of iodine emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, blood-orange-infused blue and blackberry fruit and a precise finish that just needs a little more length. Otherwise, this is very commendable. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Faconnières 1er Cru, which contains 70-80% whole bunches, has a perfumed and floral bouquet of violets and iris. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, very focused and perhaps the most sophisticated of all Virgile Lignier’s cuvées. He comments that this was closed 10 days ago but to his surprise has completely changed in recent days. On this showing, it will surely be the "must-buy" from Lignier-Michelot’s range. Superb. |

Burghound (93)(from a .72 ha holding of 60+ year old vines; 70% whole cluster). A background hint of reduction isn’t enough to overshadow the notes of liqueur-like dark berries, violet, spice and a subtle application of wood. There is fine volume, power and a taut muscularity to the mineral-driven larger-scaled flavors that aren’t quite as refined on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finish that is firm, balanced, long and youthfully austere. Patience absolutely necessary but if you have at least some, by all means consider this as well. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2023 Morey-Saint-Denis Faconnières 1er Cru, which contains 70% whole cluster, offers black pepper and pencil shaving scents on the nose that leans more toward the black side of the fruit spectrum. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite peppery and lively, but there is also a sense of elegance and Pinoté toward the lingering finish. There's good potential here. |

Vinous (92-95)(aging in 33% new oak; these vines just under Mazis-Chambertin are now 104 years old, according to Boillot): Bright ruby-red. Very ripe but youthfully brooding aromas of black cherry, licorice, menthol and stone. Then surprisingly fat, pliant and sweet in the mouth, with its dark cherry and black raspberry fruit displaying outstanding creamy depth and volume. Wonderfully rich, seamless and relaxed, finishing with utterly suave tannins and terrific length, if not yet quite the complexity of the Champonnets. But that will come with time. This wine struck me as more relaxed than Boillot's 2016s from frost-affected vines on the Côte de Beaune. A splendid Gevrey premier cru in the making. |
