Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97-99)

(5-Star Wine) Cyrielle serves this wine last as it takes longer to eat its oak. A little bit of reduction related to the oak does indeed show. The barrel also expresses its tannins a little more forcefully at the finish. But these are details which will not affect the long term majesty of this wine which is showing an almost austere concentration of fruit. A marvellous wine but I do not think it will quite challenge the Chambertin. Tasted Nov 2019.

Decanter (100)

Rousseau Clos de Bèze is a blend of three plots that total 1.42ha. Cyrielle believes the wine shows better in its youth than Chambertin. Both wines, however, are vinified in the same way: destemmed, long maceration, gentle extraction and ageing in new François Frères barrels. The result is sublime: charming in its youth, with accessible, ripe notes of red and black fruits, spice, mineral and game, plus a velvety, dense texture that is firm but not forbidding. This has the substance to last fifty years if cellared well.

Vinous (98-100)

The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has an even more complex bouquet than the Chambertin - a quite profound, quite riveting cornucopia of red berry fruit, sous-bois and crushed stone all delivered with breathtaking delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, perhaps more saline than the Chambertin, wonderful acidity with real depth and structure towards the finish that already feels extremely persistent. Potential wine of the vintage, right here.

Decanter (99)

My red wine of the vintage. Comparing the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze in Rousseau’s cellar, the Bèze is generally better received in cool years, which is the case in 2021. It is spicier and more open, the aromas more voluptuous, with ripe red and black fruit, plenty of earthy, mineral depth of flavour and complexity, and a texture on the palate that is plumper, riper and more ‘exhibitioniste’, according to Cyrielle Rousseau.

Rousseau’s 1988 Charmes-Chambertin was superb. Deeply expressive, it blossomed on the palate with endless layers of flavor, stunning balance, and a note of sweetness on the long, lingering finish.

Vinous - Neal Martin (95)

The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a savoury, quite meaty nose underneath that carapace of red fruit, very well defined with rose petal and light peony scents. Quite mercurial in the glass. The palate is elegant, though delivers all the substance you demand from a Grand Cru, demonstrating more flesh than the 2009 Ruchottes-Chambertin, quite minerally and intense on the persistent finish. This is a "grower"—the more I come back to this, the more I fall for its charms.

Vinous - Neal Martin (95)

The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is more backward on the nose compared to the 2017, darker and blacker fruit by direct comparison, traces of autumn leaves on a muddy ground (to quote The White Stripes), fragrant and alluring. The palate has a ripe and almost opulent entry that has a touch more rondeur than the 2017 as you would expect. There is a core of sweet candied fruit here, hints of bouquet garni and bay leaf towards the structured and almost stocky finish. Again, like the 2017, it seems to have gained weight since I last tasted it and it deserves a higher score.

Vinous - Neal Martin (95)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a splendid wine for the vintage. This has a sensual bouquet with vibrant red berry fruit, wild hedgerow, rose petal and, as I wrote before, quintessential Rousseau in style. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied and armed with that killer thread of acidity. Vibrant and mineral-driven, it fans out gloriously towards the finish and has a long road ahead of it. Superb.

Vinous (94-96)

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a mixture of red and black fruit, beautifully delineated, hints of blood orange and crushed stone percolating through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, perfectly judged acidity, slightly granular in texture towards the finish that displays commendable weight and length. Again, there is just the right sapidity on the finish. Superb.

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
