(1x75cl) 2005Vinous (94+)
Deep red with ruby highlights. Distinctly purple aromas of blackberry, violet and menthol. Silky on entry, then considerably subtler and suaver than the Chateau des Ducs, with lovely finesse of texture and superb building fruit. Highly concentrated, young and impeccably balanced Volnay, finishing with sweet tannins and a whiplash of fruit. Much more accessible today than the Chateau des Ducs, but this too will reward extended cellaring.Inc. GSTSG$695.31 -
(12x75cl) 2005Vinous (89-92)
Good deep red. Discreet aromas of black cherry and minerals. Juicy, pure and fine-grained but a bit youthfully withdrawn in the middle palate. Then quite suave and palate-saturating toward the back, finishing with a fine dusting of tannins and a note of bitter chocolate. From redder soil, which gives a very fine Volnay style, says Lafarge.Inc. GSTSG$3,121.54 -
Vinous (90-92)
(from a mix of 40- and 60-year-old vines): Good bright red. Less showy on the nose today than the 1er cru, with a distinctly darker fruit character and strong spiciness. Then juicy and sweet but a bit youthfully dry-edged on the palate, with noteworthy definition to the flavors of black cherry and licorice. Finishes with very good length and backbone. This wine should benefit from the sweetening influence of a racking.Inc. GSTSG$203.37 -

The 2018 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has an absolutely glorious bouquet of perfumed black cherries, blueberry, potpourri and light violet aromas that are understated and yet focused and delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with a precise opening, and very harmonious and sensual. Pure, mineral-driven red fruit defines the effortless finish. Stunning.Inc. GSTSG$1,211.51 -

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Pitures comes from chalky soils strewn with small stones, and like last year, it will be only bottled in magnum. It has plenty of black cherry and blackcurrant fruit on the nose, lively and pretty, just a subtle black olive note developing in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with succulent ripe tannin, well structured with a sorbet-like freshness, the finish offering blood orange and tangerine among the red berry fruit. Superb. Grab one of those mags.Inc. GSTSG$507.02 -

The 2018 Volnay Les Pitures 1er Cru, which is only bottled in magnums, has wonderful detail and precision on a nose of black cherries and hints of cassis mixed with incense and iris petals. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins. Fleshy and generous, with a gentle grip on the linear and slightly meaty finish. Superb.Inc. GSTSG$767.71 -

The 2010 Volnay blossoms onto the palate with refined dark red berries. This is a supple, generous Volnay endowed with gorgeous inner perfume and terrific overall balance. A juicy, generous finish rounds things out in style.Inc. GSTSG$2,614.69 -
Wine Advocate (90-92)
The 2016 Volnay Village was reduced to a single cuvée just like it was back in 2012. It has a lovely, detailed bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry and crushed stone aromas. The palate is a mixture of Pommard’s structure and the elegance of Volnay, saline in the mouth so that you can feel the saliva flowing. I love the energy and vivid character of this Volnay that will give several years, possibly a decade of drinking pleasure.Inc. GSTSG$417.01 -
Vinous (89-91)
The 2017 Volnay Village has a playful, joyous bouquet with tart red cherries and crushed strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannin, brisk and breezy with the structure finally surfacing towards the finish. Enjoy over the next 12 to 15 years.Inc. GSTSG$1,534.68 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2018 Volnay Village comes from several parcels. It has a very pure bouquet of wild strawberry, cranberry and light crushed stone aromas, all delivered with fine delineation. The palate is very well balanced with chalky tannins that frame the open-knit, pure red cherry and strawberry fruit, leading to an elegant, persistent finish. Joyful.Inc. GSTSG$169.58 -
Vinous (89-91)
The 2019 Volnay Village, matured in used oak barrels, has such a pretty nose with red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit. Quite floral in style. The palate is well balanced with a rather sappy opening. Nice grip here with touches of pepper towards the persistent finish. Good structure, quasi-Pommard maybe.Inc. GSTSG$148.87 -
Vinous (89-91)
The 2020 Volnay Village is completely aged in used barrel. It has a transparent nose with lifted red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit with an underlying tertiary scent. The palate is more expressive than the aromatics with juicy ripe tart red cherries, quite citric in style with orange rind and a touch of bitter lemon enlivening the finish. This should drink well for up to 15 years, possibly more.Inc. GSTSG$524.81 -
Vinous (88-90)
The 2021 Volnay Village has a bright but classically-styled bouquet with tertiary, tobacco-tinged red fruit, the oak neatly integrated (though there is no new wood here.) The palate is medium-bodied, open and generous with grainy tannins, fine acidity and a saline finish. Maybe a little monochrome compared to other vintages, but it should give a decade's drinking pleasure.Inc. GSTSG$152.14 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)
Mid crimson purple. The nose is a little more restrained. Now some lively cherries on the palate with very good grip, a little bit of white pepper, with the fruit returning effortlessly behind. Smoothly charming. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Dec 2024.Inc. GSTSG$187.37 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (87-90)
Good deep red. At once more reserved and more precise on the nose than the normale, with hints of dark fruits and minerals. Tighter, fresher and more wound-up, with ripe, harmonious acidity. Comes across as riper than the regular village wine, and longer on the aftertaste. The vines that go into this cuvee are located adjacent to premier cru parcels in Volnay.Inc. GSTSG$1,857.14 -
Vinous (89+)
Saturated dark red with ruby highlights. Black fruit aromas show an almost liqueur-like ripeness. Deep flavors of dark berries and violet, given excellent cut by firm acidity. A serious, youthfully tight wine with a solid tannic spine. I'd give this a good eight years in the cellar. As good a vintage for this cuvee as I can recall.Inc. GSTSG$153.58 -
(12x75cl) 2006Vinous (88)
Medium red. Cool aromas of cherry and mint. Juicy, spicy and a bit imploded today, with hints of dark raspberry, mint and underbrush. Less obviously sweet than Lafarge's 2007s. Finishes with dusty tannins that may still be a bit tight from the bottling.Inc. GSTSG$1,873.49 -
Vinous (87+)
Good full red. High-toned, slightly piney aromas of cherry, spices and mint. Juicy, dry and penetrating, with the minty quality carrying through onto the palate. Finishes firmly tannic, with a saline nuance and slightly spiky acidity. I wanted a bit more verve.Inc. GSTSG$155.76 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2009 Volnay Vendanges Selectionnées is a selection of village-level parcels. This is a decidedly centered style of Volnay built on a solid core of fruit. It possesses plenty of mid-palate juiciness, while the fruit has enough sheer density to match the tannins on the finish.Inc. GSTSG$145.95 -
(6x75cl) 2011Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89-91)
Bright medium red. Cherry, earthy underbrush and a whiff of spicy oak on the nose; reminded me of Barbaresco. Dry and energetic in the mouth, with noteworthy lift and vinosity to the red fruit, spice and earth flavors. More structured and complex than the regular village cuvee, but its more serious tannic spine will probably call for a couple years of patience.Inc. GSTSG$713.30 -
(1x75cl) 2013Wine Advocate (93)
The 2013 Volnay Vendanges Selectionées comes from a selection of 50-year-old vines on more calcareous soils that tend to produce more "vin de garde" fruit than vines used for the Volnay Village. There was no 2012 produced by the domaine While it is adorned with similar scents as the Village, there is a greater sense of depth and intensity on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, more backbone than the Village Cru and a sense of symmetry toward the finish. Give this 5-6 years in bottle before broaching, and you will have a very serious Volnay on your hands.Inc. GSTSG$165.22 -
Jancis Robinson (17.5)
Terroir selection in the centre of the appellation just below the premiers crus. Sturdy, meaty nose warns against opening this too early. Pretty compact with very fine sandy tannins.Inc. GSTSG$1,415.69
