Good medium red. High-toned, liqueur-like aromas of blackberry, blueberry and smoky underbrush. Densely packed and broad, showing the sappiness and great energy of the vintage. Black raspberry fruit is complicated by iron and mocha notes. The dense finish features slowly rising persistence and surprisingly smooth tannins. This vineyard was originally planted in the 1950s but Mugnier replanted about half of the vines in 1987.Inc. GSTSG$6,398.08 -

Five barrels – about normal production. In middle of the vineyard. Terres rouges and blanches. It’s a small parcel so it’s assembled from the start. Fred thinks that inside each climat the magic is to have big diversity which makes the wine complex, rich and well balanced. Separating the soils seems erroneous to him. Very sweet and fresh and transparent with such life! He thinks it has taken on a personality so strongly in the last few years. Very fine and long. Charming. Polished cherry fruit.Inc. Bright medium red. Expressive aromas of raspberry, mocha, brown spices and underbrush. Juicy, fine-grained and light on its feet, offering a rare combination of soil tones, fresh red fruits, minerals, herbs and leather. Delivers terrific delineation without any impression of weight. Flavors of raspberry, coffee and saline minerality perk up the salivary glands on the vibrant, rising finish. Just a touch imploded today--and I suppose it's possible that this wine will further close down in bottle. But it's wonderfully expressive today.Inc. GSTSG$6,175.66 -

The 2015 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is excellent, opening in the glass with notes of peony, ripe cherries, briary fruits, potpourri, dark chocolate and coniferous forest floor—more wild in profile than Mugnier's other wines from Chambolle. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and deep, with impressive power and a long finish. This is quite a dramatic Bonnes Mares by Mugnier's standards, and the only criticism one could make is that it doesn't possess the ineffable sense of completeness that distinguishes his Amoureuses and Musigny. Discussing his Bonnes Mares, Mugnier notes that half of the vineyard was replanted in 1988 and a quarter in 1980. As these young vines reach age 30, he observes, they have become more Chambolle in character.Inc. GSTSG$3,083.51 -
Jancis Robinson (18.5)
In the middle of the vineyard. Terres rouges and terres blanches. Small parcel so assembled from the start. Barrel sample. Seductive aroma but in a much richer style than the Clos de la Maréchale. Smells deep and seductive. A perfume I would love to be enveloped in. Sour red cherry and a touch of orange as well as floral. Complex and expressive. Beauty of fruit purity on the palate, like biting into a perfect red cherry, crunchy but sweet and tangy. The tannins are spicy and refined. A complete wine with succulence, fine-boned structure and intensity though not apparently dense.Inc. GSTSG$1,715.20 -

The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a tightly-wound bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit, hints of wet limestone, quite strict and a little timid. The palate is framed by gritty tannins, quite saline and robust, though for me, this lacks the flow and harmony of the Fuées. I would like to see this after four or five years.Inc. GSTSG$1,640.34 -
(1x75cl) 2021Vinous (88-90)
The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a satisfying bouquet with beautifully defined red fruit, potpourri, orange zest and crushed limestone. The palate leaves a few questions to be answered however. It is light-bodied, a little skeletal, which is something you never expect from this habitually opulent Grand Cru. This slightly tapers towards its strict finish, as if the wine had been rationed by the 2021 growing season, dropping away rather rapidly. I must be parsimonious with my score because it is lapped by Mugnier's Premier Crus.Inc. GSTSG$2,152.64 -

Pale cherry-red. Tighter, higher-pitched aromas of cherry, strawberry, gunflint and spice; clearly fresher than the normale and the Fuees. Supple and sweet in the mouth, with spicy, fresh red fruit flavors. This offers much better clarity than the normale and the Fuees. Fresh on the finish, with finer, softer tannins. Lovely understated Chambolle. Perhaps Mugnier's most successful '95 and the best value by a wide margin.Inc. GSTSG$3,002.84 -

The 1996 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses was ethereal in its menthol, eucalyptus and pure ripe fruit. It was a totally seductive wine from start to finish.Inc. GSTSG$41,494.99 -
Vinous (93)
Bright red-ruby. Ripe, deeply spicy red fruit and mineral aromas. Superconcentrated and ripe, but with sharply defined, penetrating red fruit and mineral flavors. Every bit as dense as the Bonnes-Mares but finer and more vibrant. Offers an uncanny combination of texture and pure stony cut. Palate-staining finish features black raspberry and mineral flavors and suave, thoroughly buffered tannins.Inc. GSTSG$5,155.59 -
Vinous (93)
Medium red. Lovely perfumed nose offers raspberry, rose petal and minerals as well as hints of darker black cherry and blueberry. A distinct step up in density from the foregoing 2004s; silky, scented and almost lush for the year. Compellingly perfumed and vibrant wine. Finishes broad and long, with strikingly sweet tannins and lovely lingering perfume (a rapid succession of sensations is the way Mugnier puts it).Inc. GSTSG$12,422.16 -
Vinous (95)
Bright, dark red. Pure but subdued aromas of raspberry, minerals, rose petal and flinty stone. Wonderfully suave on entry, then vibrant and sappy in the middle, with pungent raspberry and crushed stone flavors boasting outstanding density and freshness. Mounts impressively on the back half, finishing with outstanding lift and perfume and broad, fine-grained tannins that reach the front teeth. Exciting wine.Inc. GSTSG$22,717.21 -

The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is endowed with an explosive bouquet and a multi-dimensional, textured core of dark fruit. The inner palate sweetness, richness and nuance here are all breathtaking. The finish seems to last into the next day. This is another spellbinding effort from Mugnier.Inc. GSTSG$6,189.65 -

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureses is sweet, layered and totally beautiful. At the same time, it is pretty clear the wine has already begun to shut down. With time in the glass, some of the typical weightless energy of Amoureuses comes through, but despite its considerable appeal, the wine is showing only a fraction of its ultimate potential. I imagine the 2009 will enjoy a long drinking window once it awakens from its current slumber. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.Inc. GSTSG$11,180.91 -

One of the clear highlights in the range, the 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is simply dazzling in the way it captures both the essence of site and the pure richness of the vintage. Layers of perfumed, silky red-fleshed fruit built to a gracious, textured finish full of the resonance and pure depth that is so typical of the year. Mugnier served the Amoureuses last among his 2012s in this tasting at the domaine, and it showed beautifully, even after the Grand Crus.Inc. GSTSG$3,400.69 -

Bright, dark red. Knockout nose combines raspberry, flowers and crushed stone. Utterly seamless on the palate, with its fruit sweetness perfectly countered by minerality. The wine's powerful stony underpinning gives it outstanding sappiness and inner-mouth tension. Offers a remarkable combination of thick, silky texture and energy. Finishes with thoroughly buffered, noble tannins and outstanding length. This should evolve slowly and gracefully for at least the next two decades.Inc. GSTSG$3,954.79 -

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with peony and iris flower permeating the black cherry and blueberry fruit, all beautifully detailed and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very pure in style with wonderful focus and silky texture. Maybe the 2017 might possess a little more length, but this has wonderful breeding. The mouth tingles with glee after the wine has departed. Tasted at the Domaine.Inc. GSTSG$4,669.10 -

A stunning bouquet of raspberries, rose petals, blood orange and sweet soil tones, deftly framed by a subtle touch of new oak, introduces Mugnier's 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses, a medium to full-bodied, supple and expansive wine framed by filigree tannins and racy acids, exemplifying the ideal of intensity without weight. Long and precise, this isn't as structured as the 2016 or 2015 renditions, and it will be open for business sooner. But the 2017 Amoureuses looses very little by comparison with those two brilliant wines.Inc. GSTSG$19,979.16 -

Mugnier's 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is thrilling, soaring from the glass with scents of peonies, blood orange, rose petals, raspberries, bergamot and Indian spices.
