The 2012 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts from winemaker Sebastian Cathiard was showing some reduction like de Montille's Malconsorts: rather animally on the nose with a touch of rubber, missing the delineation it might have otherwise possessed. Returning after ten minutes, that feral aspect ebbs away. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and sweet tannin. It shakes off that reduction to reveal a nicely defined, quite voluminous finish that is bursting with red fruit. If it does pull through it will deserve a very good mark and I suspect it will do just that. |

Wine Advocate (96-98)As usual, there are three barrels of Cathiard's 2015 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, though whereas historically it was 100% new oak, there are two new and a single one-year-old barrel maturing this wine. It finished its malolactic in June. It has a very composed and pure bouquet that gains in volume with time, with aeration bunches of wilted violet. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannin, great structure and freshness here, the judicious use of new oak allowing the terroir to show through. It feels correct and strict on the finish, no bravura climax, rather finishing in more understated fashion and keeping you hooked. |

Wonderfully high-pitched aromas and flavors of sappy red fruits, Oriental spices, blood orange and bitter chocolate; it's rare to find this sort of perfume in 2009. Then compellingly sweet and sappy on the palate, saturating the mouth with flavor. A large-scaled premier cru that spreads out impressively on the finish, which features substantial but very fine tannins. Does this have the complexity and verve of the outstanding 2008? Cathiard believes this will be good young and old, but you'll need to forget the 2008, which is a real vin de garde |

Wine Advocate (94)Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts from winemaker Sebastian Cathiard was showing some reduction like de Montille's Malconsorts: rather animally on the nose with a touch of rubber, missing the delineation it might have otherwise possessed. Returning after ten minutes, that feral aspect ebbs away. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and sweet tannin. It shakes off that reduction to reveal a nicely defined, quite voluminous finish that is bursting with red fruit. If it does pull through it will deserve a very good mark and I suspect it will do just that. |
