The 2016 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru was perhaps the one grand cru that I felt was a little disjointed and did not quite deliver the vivacity of the Chapelle-Chambertin or Latricières. It includes 40% whole bunch fruit and was depleted by 30% because of the frost, but it just came across a little dolorous at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This feels a little foursquare and conservative and just needs more of the flamboyance and blue fruit you associate with this vineyard. The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru was cropped at just 20-22hl/ha due to the dryness. Today this is similar on the nose to the sample I encountered in London, though perhaps there is a small reduction at play. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine depth and plenty of mineralité; the 30% whole bunch imparts a pleasant pepperiness on the finish. That was a clever decision as the oak is deftly interwoven on the nose and allowing the noble terroir to come through. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, very harmonious with touches of orange rind and cedar towards the finish. Good full red. Aromatic but tight nose hints at minerals, spices, pepper and earth. Concentrated, sweet and fine, with a tight kernel of fruit compressed today by strong, sappy acidity. Bright, deep red. Aromas of raspberry liqueur, blueberry, menthol and musky herbs. Rich, chewy and dry; comes across as quite austere after the last couple of grand crus. But then Jeremy Seysses finds this quality to be reassuring in the context of 2007. I'm drawn to austerity in this vintage, he told me, adding that he plans to lay down magnums of this wine in his personal cellar, along with the Clos de la Roche and Echezeaux. The 2011 Bonnes-Mares is dark, powerful and racy. Some of the typical Bonnes-Mares structure is tempered in this vintage, making the wine a little more accessible than it usually is. Menthol, licorice, dried herbs, smoke and dark stone fruits blossom in a dark, virile Burgundy that should provide thrilling drinking for the next 30 years or so. Although I don't think the 2011 will take as long as most vintages to blossom, it will need at least a decade to start to open up. This is elegant and very refined, the exuberant predisposition of Bonnes-Mares discretely contained, buttoned-down for now. The palate is very well defined with lace-like tannin. Depth of fruit but you could miss it because of the lively fresh character. Lots of energy and a hint of stems as the wine opens. Fine, chalky tannins that melt on the finish. Towards the north of the Cote de Nuits, the chalky soils found in Chambolle Musigny can be credited for the signature elegance of these renowned wines. Although they might be lighter in colour and tannins, red wine from Chambolle does not lack for the purity and intensity of its fruit. The pinnacle of all of these qualities can be certainly be found in the two Grand Cru vineyards located in Chambolle, Musigny and Bonnes Mares.
