Juicy berry fruits, leafy herbs, and earthy notes emerge from the 2018 Château Mauvesin Barton, and it’s medium-bodied, nicely textured, and elegant, with both nicely integrated acidity and tannins. It shines from its balance and freshness, yet still has the sunny fruit of the vintage.

Melanie Barton has now been in charge at Mauvesin-Barton for 10 years, and there is a real feeling of the wine having found its voice - a gentle, fruit-forward Moulis with finesse if not a huge amount of power. Delicate with vibrancy, plenty of blackberry fruits with well-defined but soft tannins, they have really done a great job in the vintage, a value pick and I can't remember tasting a better example of this wine during en primeur. They suffered badly from frost in 2021.

The 2021 Mauvesin Barton was picked from 30 September until 11 October and aged in one-third new oak. There is more Cabernet this year (52%) due to frost damage. It has a vibrant nose with black cherries, bilberry and perhaps more floral scents than I have encountered apropos previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, not a deep or powerful Moulis, yet well-balanced and surfeit with freshness, a pleasant bitter swerve on the finish.

The Grand Vin 2022 Château Mauvesin Barton is beautiful and well worth seeking out. Ripe red and black fruits, chalky minerality, and floral notes are just some of its nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, elegant, layered mouthfeel and beautiful tannins. I think you could safely put this up with the best to date from the château, and it’s going to evolve for 20+ years if well stored.

The 2005 Mazeyres is a tough wine to taste. Hard tannins and wild, gamy notes dominate the wine's balance. Mazeyres is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It may be that the vegetal qualities of Franc were too much for the wine's balance. This is an awkward showing,

The Cabernet Franc is especially notable in both the wine's flavor and structural profile. I would prefer to drink this perfumed, expressive Pomerol over the next decade or so. The 2017 is very nicely done. Tasted two times.

The 2018 Mazeyres is absolutely gorgeous. Bright, exquisitely perfumed and nuanced, Mazeyres shows just how attractive the best wines from Pomerol's sandier soils can be. Floral notes add lift to a core of red/purplish berry fruit, with striking textural depth and nuance that builds in the glass. Although quite accessible, Mazeyres also offers a good bit of depth while retaining its mid-weight personality. Tasted four times.

Mazeyres is not a big or obvious wine. Instead, it is a Pomerol that is all about understatement and class. As always, the Cabernet Franc is a strong marker.

The 2021 Mazeyres has a well-defined nose with vivacious red fruit tinged with blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite ferrous in style with just a little attenuation towards the finish. Drink over the next 10 years.

Typical of Saint-Estèphe, this wine is totally closed up. It is more tannins than fruit at this stage of its development. But it is obvious that there is fruit there, and that it will develop. But for now, it's a case of watch this space.
