Quite a classic wine for this hot and dry year. Excellent depth but also freshness, with convincing ripeness and a very long finish. Just medium to full body, with gritty tannins at the end. The fruit sweetness here is restrained. 60% new oak. Drink or hold.

  • Langoa Barton 2023 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 2023

    Wine Advocate (94+)

Notes of cassis, dark berries and cherries mingled with hints of pencil shavings introduce the 2023 Langoa Barton, a medium- to full-bodied, layered and fleshy wine with terrific depth at the core and classic structure rendered with contemporary polish. As readers will remember, the Barton family's new winery now permits for more precise, parcel-by-parcel winemaking as well as gentler handling of the fruit. It's a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

The 2016 Laniote St Émilion offers pretty, earthy red berry aromas on the nose, which is a little rustic but charming. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin; touches of black tea and allspice infuse the black fruit, leading to a rounded but, again, quite charming finish. Fine.

The 2019 Laniote Saint-Émilion has come together nicely in élevage. Crème de cassis, lavender, sweet spice, mocha and espresso give this mid-weight Saint-Émilion lovely flavor complexity and plenty of nuance. Laniote is not terribly complex nor structured, but it is quite attractive, especially for medium-term drinking.

  • Larcis Ducasse 2005 (1x300cl)
    (1x300cl) 2005

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

I’ve had many brilliant bottles of the 2005 Château Larcis Ducasse but it’s never shown as spectacularly as on this occasion. It’s a magical, phenomenal Saint-Emilion that couldn’t get any better. Stunningly pure crème de cassis, white truffle, white flowers, cedar pencil, and smoked earth nuances all emerge from this incredibly powerful, opulent wine that has the hallmark minerality, freshness and focus of this great terroir. Don’t miss this!
  • Larcis Ducasse 2006 (6x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (92)

Tasted both at the château and then blind at Farr Vintners' tasting, the 2006 Château Larcis Ducasse is maturing nicely, far better than the Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse that I tasted side by side. It has plenty of ripe black cherry, strawberry pastille and creme de cassis on the nose, quite opulent for the vintage and well defined. The palate is medium bodied with fine tannin cloaked in ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit; underlying all of this is a seam of cold stone that imparts freshness and satisfying tension on the finish. This is well worth seeking out and is performing at a much higher level than the 2006 Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarosse. Tasted February 2016.

Inky purple. Sexy black fruity cocktail on the nose, complicated by grapey, smoky and vanillin nuances. Rich, dense and suave with juicy, delineated blackberry and black cherry fruit complicated by minerals and fresh flowers. The smooth finish features spicy chocolate and plum flavors. Though concentrated and rich, this wine maintains a lovely graceful, high-acid quality that provides for maximum definition of its flavors. A beautiful wine and one of my sentimental favorites of the vintage.

  • Larcis Ducasse 2018 (12x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

The 2018 Château Larcis Ducasse checks in as 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc that comes from a gorgeous hillside terroir on the Côte Pavie, located between Château Pavie and Château Bellefont-Belcier. Aged 18 months in 60% new barrels, it offers a truly sensational bouquet of ripe blackcurrants, espresso roast, scorched earth, bloody meat, chocolate, iron, and bouquet garni. A massive, super-rich Saint-Emilion with a dense, concentrated, layered mouthfeel, it has building yet sweet tannins and incredible purity of fruit. Reminding me of the 2005 shortly after release, this heavenly juice offers astonishing richness and depth while staying flawlessly balanced and elegant. Sadly, there are less than 3,000 cases produced, but this monumental, legendary wine won't hit maturity for a good 8-10 years and will have 40-50 years of longevity if well stored. Hats off to Nicolas Thienpont and consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt for producing one of the wines of the vintage as well as one of the greatest young Bordeaux I've ever tasted.

It may not be the biggest, richest or most powerful wine in this tasting, but it is surely among the most delicious. The 2012 can be enjoyed now for its youthful fruit or cellared for several decades.
  • Larcis Ducasse 2015 (12x75cl)

    James Suckling (99)

The aromas to this are phenomenal with oyster shell, blackberries, iodine and black truffles. Full-bodied, layered and so refined and intense. Love the texture and intensity. Chalky. Amazing. Goes on for minutes. Try in 2023.

  • Larcis Ducasse 2016 (12x75cl)

    James Suckling (99)

The aromas here are so spellbinding with shitake mushrooms, wet earth and moss, as well as tree bark and, finally, dark fruit. The palate is incredible as it builds and grows with full body, but always tight and reserved. It shows so much depth and complexity. Please try not to touch this until 2025.

  • Larcis Ducasse 2017 (6x150cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)

The 2017 Larcis Ducasse is just as compelling from bottle as it was from barrel. Pliant and deep, with terrific fruit purity, Larcis possesses striking fruit purity and tons of resonance. Red cherry, blood orange, pomegranate, mint, spice, licorice and mocha infuse the 2017 with striking complexity as well as nuance. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this gem. Larcis is never one of the most obvious wines in Saint-Émilion, but it is often among the most regal. Best of all, Larcis remains one of the best values anywhere in the world.
