Ray Jordan (98)

Winemaker Brian Croser is pretty excited about this wine, and a quick sniff and extended sip, and I think I know why. Like the rest of Australia, it was a very small crop resulting in a wine of deep fruit concentration. Once again, the wine spent an extended time until February this year on full lees, allowing pick up of further complexity and textural mouth feel. The striking feature is the palate power and length. I have tasted many of these wines but I don’t think I have tasted better.

Decanter (99)

Owned since 2011 by Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw of Shaw & Smith Wines in the Adelaide Hills, the 20ha northeast facing Tolpuddle vineyard occupies a prime position in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. The pair saw the vineyard’s potential immediately, and have been producing exceptional single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir ever since. There was a particularly wet start to 2021 – one of the coolest on record – resulting in much smaller but more concentrated grapes. Harvested by hand, the grapes are whole-bunch pressed then aged in French oak for nine months. Vincenzo Arnese: The nose is fresh and ripe with incredible structure, showing quince, candied lemon peel, grapefruit juice and subtle oak. A lingering acidity completes the frame of this outstanding wine. Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW: A wonder of lightness and precision; a hedonistic mix of immediate restrained pleasure and long-term intellectual provocation. An amazingly subtle and complex finish. I adore this wine. Amanda Barnes: Aromas of gunflint, lavender, lemon peel and wet stones lead into a mouthfilling yet svelte wine with mouthwatering acidity and a long, savoury finish. Will cellar well for more than a decade. Nominated by Sarah Ahmed

Vinous (98+)

Luminous straw. Penetrating nuances of lime and guava join the lemon verbena, jasmine, mineral and white stone fruit aromas on the knockout, captivating nose. Then dense, complex and multilayered, offering profound flavors of fresh citrus fruit, sweet spices and talcum powder. Closes extremely long, clean and precise; this is a young white wine of utterly mesmerizing beauty. I find this to be one of the best young CSHs I have ever tasted; it is stylistically different but almost on the same quality level as the marvelous 2010 CSH. One sniff (never mind taste) and I was left almost speechless - and I’m not usually one who keeps his mouth shut when I recognize a truly great wine.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

Clear pale colour, a refined and chiselled nose. A little quality oak now emerges to flesh out the bouquet. The fruit is very evenly distributed across the palate, still with an oak presence, a little sandalwood, a good mix between fruit and acidity, and a fine long finish. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: November 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)

Full primrose. There is an initial richness which cannot quite hide the stones beneath, nor should it. Terrific energy at the back of the palate, more so than Romanée, with fine length and the saline touch last seen in the Perrières. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)

From three sources, all in the upper part. Glowing mid yellow. Lovely weight of fruit here, the oak lending a light coconut touch. There is a proper concentration behind, ripe enough as well, almost a petrol noted, and very persistent. Drink from 2026-2031.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)

Bright pale primrose, with a reductive nose. There’s a very significant weight to the fruit though, with good acidity behind, a little yellow fruit then a cushion of broad-based orchard fruit behind. A punchy, energetic finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023.

Falstaff (94)

Light, still slightly cloudy yellow-green, silver glints. A fragrant hint of fresh orange zest, fine yellow stone fruit, underpinned by a little mango and pineapple, mineral touch in the background. Full-bodied, fine fruit expression, tightly woven, silky texture, pleasant acidity, followed by soft notions of yellow tropical fruit on the finish. Length and potential for development.

Decanter (95)

Tasted from magnum. Although this was a vintage affected by botrytis, it's not really evident on the nose, which is vivid, herbal and smoky. It still displays explosive fruit, rich but fresh, spicy and zesty. It's full-bodied but very mineral, and any botrytis is now integrated into the palate. The finish is persistent but not aggressive. Overall, a magnificent demonstration of how these wines can age.

The 2001 Weissenkirchen Ried Achleiten Riesling Smaragd is very clear and fresh on the intense but botrytis-free nose, with herbal and floral tea aromas complementing the clear apricot notes. Pure, salty, fresh and very elegant on the palate, this is a gorgeous matured Riesling with great vitality and tension, still with good grip and a dry, straight character. Very salty. Great and ready to go for another decade or more. Tasted in Dürnstein, Wachau, September 2018.
