Vinous (91-94)Red-ruby. Superripe aromas of black cherry and smoked meat; smells concentrated! Then sweet and quite penetrating on the palate, with a slightly tart and reserved character to its fruit, due in large part to the wine's rather powerful acidity. Finishes very pure and long, with plenty of flesh. This reminded me of a much more suave version of the Latricieres. |

Burghound (93-95)A cool and highly restrained nose of spice, plum, underbrush and animale notes displays an ample amount of wood influence. The driving minerality of the openly muscular and hugely proportioned flavors is patently obvious and it continues onto the mouth coating and breathtakingly long finish. I very much like the balance here and while it can't quite match the sheer depth of material evidenced by the Chapelle, it's close and like the Chapelle I would suggest that this is very definitely not a good candidate for early consumption. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has more amplitude on the nose compared to the Clos-de-Bèze, offering layers of red berry fruit, briar, tobacco and light roasted chestnut aromas. This is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin on the entry. Like the Clos-de-Bèze, the fruit is a little backward at the moment, though there is substance here. It feels tightly coiled, but the structure and density on the finish suggest that it should develop in bottle. Maybe a little more persistence on the aftertaste would not have gone amiss, though that is the leitmotif of the vintage. |

Vinous (96-98)The 2020 Chambertin Grand Cru has a magnificent bouquet with delineated redcurrant, raspberry and strawberry scents, quite pixelated in style, very focused and shimmering with tension. The palate is extremely well balanced with fine but firm tannins that frame some exquisite red fruit with real mineralité that just floods through on the finish. Brilliant. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru offers a touch more complexity and nuance than the Clos-de-Bèze with red berry fruit, orange rind, crushed stone and wilted rose petals. It's a little more delineated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, again, quite creamy in texture with a bit of new oak on the finish (though there is a prudent use of new wood - one new barrel out of three). Quite seductive, this should age well in bottle, though afford it four to five years at least. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to settle in the glass. The exuberant bouquet has brambly red berry fruit, briar and a tang of shucked oyster shells, gaining intensity in the glass, though it doesn't quite match the precision of the Clos-de-Bèze. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite muscular in style as it approaches its bold finish. Very good length and impressive power, yet my affection lies with the Clos-de-Bèze this year. |

Wine Advocate (97)Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine du Clos Frantin (Albert Bichot) has a dense, fruit-driven bouquet that does not possess the detail of Rousseau's Chambertin 2012. Wild strawberry mingles with cranberry and dried orange peel notes that gain intensity in the glass, but not quite the precision. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, citrus fresh in the mouth with touches of blood orange. Perhaps the true quality of this wine is unveiled because it is far superior than the recalcitrant nose. There is a touch of bitterness on the finish, but that merely lends this Chambertin tension. Extraordinarily long and vital, this was one of the huge surprises of the blind tasting. |

Burghound (92-95)There is hint of menthol on the overtly sauvage aromas of mostly cool and earthy red berry fruit. There is fine intensity and plenty of muscle to the almost pungently mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that possess outstanding persistence on the well-balanced finish. Note however that this is going to need a very long snooze in a cool cellar as this is very much built for long-term aging. Don't miss! |

Vinous (94-96)The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru was picked on September 7 and made with 50% whole bunch and 40% new oak. It has a very pure, generous bouquet with layers of red cherries, crushed strawberry and cranberry fruit and well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Very lithe and fresh, leading to a delineated finish that ranks alongside many others I have tasted. This is a superb Chambertin that will age with style. |

Wine Advocate (93)The 1988 Chambertin Grand Cru from Rousseau offers up a complex and pristine bouquet of red and black berries, grilled meat, wood smoke and cedary wood. On the palate, the wine is medium-full, with a firm but fine chassis of tannin and taut but integrated signature 1988 acidity—structural elements framing a Chambertin of great depth and intensity. This is not as ample or authoritative as the very greatest vintages, but in terms of balance, complexity and concentration, it doesn't miss a beat. |

Vinous (93)The 1998 Chambertin is one of the real surprises in this tasting. From a vintage that never got much of a look, Rousseau's Chambertin is a pure and total delight. It is not the most complex wine in the vertical, nor is it the most pedigreed, but it is absolutely exquisite, as all of its elements are in perfect balance. The plum, sweet tobacco, menthol and red cherry flavors, along with the wine's soft, open-knit personality, make the 1998 impossible to resist today. Readers looking for a vintage of the Rousseau Chambertin that is peaking will find much to admire in the 1998. |
