Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured entirely in new oak, was surprisingly closed on the nose, needing a bit of coaxing. It offers dark berry fruit, truffle and light violet scents, the latter becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit, blood orange, blueberry and crushed stone. It fans out towards the finish, perhaps the Beaumont with a bit more panache? Still, this is a lovely Echézeaux. In BondSG$9,750.00 -

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 1er Cru is matured entirely in new oak. It has a brutally backward bouquet that only reluctantly begins to unfurl. I almost asked Emmanuel Rouget to run upstairs and give my glass a decant! The palate is silky smooth on the entry, beautifully focused and citrus-fresh. Blood orange and hints of crème de cassis appear towards the crystalline finish. Superb. In BondSG$39,988.00 -

Fresh colour, lemon and lime, not massive at all in bouquet but I am learning not to expect that chez Sauzet. A broad beamed intensity on the palate, this almost seems uncouth after the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, but it still has its finesse. A light oatmeal touch from young (but not new) wood, and a great deal in reserve. A fine and impressive wine, though unlike in most cellars in 2022, I am leaning towards the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet today. But this will definitely work! Drink from 2030-2040. A mix from below Puligny and Meursault. Very pale in colour. A slightly waxy note to the nose, not quite in place. All in white fruit with a certain amount of nuance, indeed this continues extremely well through to the back of the palate, very appetising. Just the bouquet to put in place. A pure clear lemon colour. The extra weight of Montrachet is indeed apparent on the nose. Ripe pears. Perhaps this is a little less in the Sauzet style, not being from their own fruit, but it is impressive. The weight on the palate is profound, with certainly ripe fruit but also a point of minerality right in the middle, and good acidity. Almost a wine to eat rather than drink. It does indeed have the requisite very long finish. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,760.00
