Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Champlots is another of the more immediate wines in the range, bursting with aromas of pear, confit citrus, nutmeg and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, this will drink well young.

Bessin-Tremblay’s 2022 Chablis 1er Cru La Forêt—a wine that in less-favorable years such as 2021 and 2024 becomes an ingredient in Montmains bottling—has turned out nicely. Opening in the glass to reveal notes of fresh hazelnuts, acacia, fennel and citrus peel, it’s medium to full-bodied, intense and crisp, with tangy acidity and a long, sapid finish. Chablis purists will enjoy comparing this with Montmains.

Issuing from old vines in the middle of the historic part of Fourchaume, facing west/southwest, the 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume La Pièce Au Comte is superb. Matured in a combination of used oak (about one-third) with the remainder in stainless steel, it soars from the glass with a deep bouquet of grapefruit zest, Mirabelle plum, iodine and dried white flowers. It unites the perfumed generosity of the afternoon sun (it’s the first parcel the Bessins harvest) with classic Chablisien character, as it’s layered and concentrated yet racy and pure, with ample structuring extract and a long, saline finish. It’s a terrific wine, but with just 2,500 bottles made, it won’t be easy to find.

Cask sample. Oak shows a little more here in the aroma than on most of the Boisset whites. Mealy and spiced and a touch of vanilla. Really creamy and rounded, so generous and caressing but balanced by great freshness. Embryonically delicious with a long, piercing finish.

Cask sample. Deep-fruited and spicy, citrus and herbs. Finely creamy texture, deep, long and fresh with a slight sour note at the very end that seems to clash a little with the creamy, fruit-sweet aftertaste.

Mid smudgy crimson. Stunningly vibrant aroma of red cherry and peony (winemaker Grégory Patriat suggests violets). I'd be happy to wear this as perfume. Smells intensely sweet but also tart and tangy. All that on the palate, too. Firm, dry texture, layered super-fine tannins are almost chalky. Fabulous wine. If only I could afford to drink it! I am suggesting an early start date for the drinking window because I could actually drink this now though it is sure to have a very long life.

Jancis Robinson (18)

Light to mid crimson. Intoxicating, floral-layered red fruit with a touch of pepper. On the palate, entirely seductive with intense and pure dark-red fruits. Excellent combination of concentration, freshness and length. Then a savoury aftertaste all tangled up in the tannic elegance.

Mid cherry red. Less open than the Vosne-Romanée just tasted. Peppery and definitely spiced with a touch of oak and stems all tangled up in the aroma. A dark beauty as it opens in the glass. So elegant, embryonic and yet refined already. Fresh, appears subtle, and it is, but it's also powerful and long.

Cask sample. Subtle first impression. Ripe citrus and spice but impressionistic. As it opens, there's a rich creaminess. Rounded and full in the mouth. An unusual combination of gentle intensity.

Jancis Robinson (16.5)

Cask sample. So different from the creamy 'sweetness' of the Marsannay. More spicy, savoury, and a touch smoky. And no lack of pure citrus. Sour-fresh intensity on the palate balanced by tension from the acidity and still a rounded impression on the finish. Very long and slightly sour on the finish. Needs a little more time in bottle.

Jancis Robinson (17+)

Mid crimson. Darker-fruited than the Chorey and the Savigny, deep, pure dark fruit and some Nuits spice. Oak seems a little more marked on the nose and also on the palate. Open and surprisingly approachable but needs time for the oak to back off a bit. Long, dark, savoury finish.

Jancis Robinson (17.5)

Mid cherry red. Seductive, sweet-floral, perfumed. Open and expressive. Then deeper and more savoury on the palate. Super-fine tannins with lots of layers so that overall they are slightly chewy. Multilayerd, deeply fruited and very long. A harmonious beauty.
