Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Corton Grand Cru immediately announces a fascinating vintage. It is the most obviously overt of the reds. Ample and resonant in feel, the 2022 caresses the palate with dark red-toned fruit intermingled with scents of white pepper and crushed flowers. Time in the glass brings out its dynamic energy. The long, refined finish bristles with energy. In BondSG$1,730.00 -

The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a creamy, exotic white. Apricot, lemon confit, slate, white flowers and chamomile lend a good bit of flair. Oily and dense, with terrific balance, the Charlemagne is quite the looker. It explodes on the back with a rush of citrus and mineral-laced inflections that leave a lasting impression. In BondSG$1,765.00 -

The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru is absolutely exquisite, not to mention a significant step up in the range. Impossibly silky tannins and deep, penetrating aromatics give the Echézeaux its seductive personality. Medium in body and polished, with phenomenal balance, the Echézeaux shows how compelling the vintage is. There is no heaviness at all, nor any sign of a growing season marked by severe heat and drought. In BondSG$3,860.00 -

Whereas the Echézeaux is refined, the 2022 Grands Echézeaux is quite powerful. A firm spine of tannin gives the 2022 the explosive vertical feel of a skyscraper. Dark red fruit, licorice, incense and dried herbs begin to appear with time in the glass. The 2022 is a Burgundy for readers who can be patient. Some of the DRC 2022s will drink well on release, but the Grands-Echézeaux is not among them. It needs time.In BondSG$9,305.00 -

The 2022 La Tâche was very impressive out of barrel; still, at the time I preferred the Romanée-Conti. I am less certain of this judgement when tasting the wines in bottle. Admittedly it is splitting hairs, but to judge what they show today, the exquisite La Tâche may have edged ahead of even the Romanée-Conti at present. It is a serious wine, substantial and structured; less open than the Richebourg and showing more savoury and spice notes than overt primary fruit, yet it is a wine that is unbelievably dense with flavour and long on the finish. 26,724 bottles produced in 2022.In BondSG$25,500.00 -

The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru is quite powerful and explosive in the glass. Orange marmalade, marzipan, white pepper, tangerine oil and a kiss of French oak fill out the layers. Readers who can find the 2022 will want to grab it, as production will fall sharply for the foreseeable future now that one-third of the vineyard has been torn out in preparation for replanting in a few years' time. From there, it is likely that fruit from the replanted section will not go into the Montrachet bottling for at least several years. In BondSG$11,868.00 -

The 2022 Richebourg Grand Cru is magnificent. And I say that as someone who at times struggles to connect with this site. Not this year. Sepia-toned, ample and layered, with mind-blowing balance, the 2022 offers up an exotic mélange of black fruit, gravel, incense, licorice, new leather and whole cluster savoriness, all with its usual reserve of power. The 2022 is quite simply one of the best Richebourgs in recent memory. For those who can, don't miss it!In BondSG$4,970.00 -

Romanée-Conti can be a rather elusive, at times intellectual wine. There are no such issues with the 2022. Dark and powerful in feel, the 2022 Romanée-Conti has some of the brooding intensity of the Richebourg but delivers with a touch more grace, a touch more elegance. Savory and floral overtones weave through a core of dark-toned fruit in a Romanée-Conti that impresses with its substance and overall feel. Magnificent. In BondSG$29,570.00 -

The 2022 Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru is a real head-turner. What a wine! As is so often the case, Romanée St. Vivant is not an obvious wine, rather it is a Burgundy of detail, of understatement, of total class. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing. Silky tannins wrap around a core of red-toned fruit, mint, white pepper, blood orange and exotic spice. The long, resonant finish is impossibly elegant. Haute couture. In BondSG$1,760.00 -
Burghound (94)
(from a .41 ha parcel that is a direct continuation of the domaine's Richebourg vines; 2018 was the first vintage and it is vinified without sulfur; note that this is sold exclusively to French restaurants). A more restrained and not quite so floral-suffused combination somewhat grudgingly reveals its array of spicy and interestingly, black pepper-inflected aromas of various dark berries. There is first-rate intensity to the beautifully detailed and subtly stony flavors that terminate in a noticeably firmer and strikingly long finale. This is terrific, especially for its level, and a wine that will need at least a few years of keeping while retaining the potential to repay 12 to 15 of keeping. In BondSG$6,805.00 -
