Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

(1x75cl) 2022Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)
A sober yet fresh crimson ruby colour. Take the last two wines (Latricières and Chapelle), put them together, then add something intangible, et voila le Chambertin. A little white pepper to season the deep dark red fruit. Sensual yet with a superb tensile strength, despite relatively late harvest this stays entirely in red fruit, with more crushed strawberry than raspberry, the light seasoning of white pepper, and immaculate length. Not as immediately startling as their 2020 but very fine indeed. Infusion style! Superb. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted Dec 2023.In BondSG$1,698.74 -

(from Côte de Près Girots and Morein). A discreet but not invisible application of wood sets off aromas of slightly riper white and yellow peach with subtle Chablis influence, in particular iodine. There is again excellent volume to the sappy and beguilingly textured medium weight flavors that possess solid power if limited refinement on the citrus rind and quinine-inflected finish that is firm enough to repay mid-term keeping. In BondSG$1,698.74 -

5 Star Wine. Bottled November. Clear mid lemon. The nose is stricter than the 2023, more a classic Vaillons, with mineral purity, white fruit, plenty of flesh but nicely balanced by the lees work. Very long finish here, an exceptionally fine Vaillons. The aftertaste just keeps on delivering. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted Jun 2024.In BondSG$700.00 -

Appealing already, warm and with a sunny disposition on the palate, there is plenty of driving acidity to balance. Billaud explains that the white clay gives more power. Plenty of tension here. Will age. Not at all overripe. A fine example of Montmains with the vines averaging 35 years old. No barrels. In BondSG$410.00 -

Aged for 12 months in wood, then 6 in tank on the lees, which is the standard for all the grands crus. Light lemon yellow, a little oaky on the nose. Coconut too on the palate, but these aspects are just some top notes on top of a wealth of fruit with an excellent crystalline acidity. Very persistent. Drink from 2028-2038. The Preuses bottling benefits from 60 year old vines. Except for a flake of coconut the wood is less evident here. Tighter and tenser, a muscled grand cru, stopping short of spicy at the finish. The flavours are still expanding in the glass. Drink from 2028-2040. Tasted Jun 2024.In BondSG$1,070.00
