Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

(6x75cl) 2022```htmlExperience the exquisite Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Vv 2022, a testament to the distinguished terroir of Chablis' premier cru vineyards. Crafted meticulously from hand-selected Chardonnay grapes grown on the renowned Butteaux slope, this vintage showcases the finesse and purity characteristic of Louis Michel's estate. Fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve its vibrant minerality, the wine undergoes a delicate maturation process, allowing subtle influences of oak to enhance its complexity without overshadowing its innate elegance. The 2022 harvest benefited from optimal climatic conditions, resulting in a crisp acidity, nuanced citrus notes, and a lingering, refined finish. Louis Michel, celebrated for his unwavering commitment to sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques, delivers a Chablis that is both expressive and perfectly balanced. Ideal for pairing with seafood, poultry, or enjoying gracefully on its own, this 1er Cru exemplifies the pinnacle of Chablis craftsmanship.

Ripe yet fresh and bright aromas are comprised by notes of citrus, sea breeze and more prominent mineral reduction nuances along with an interesting hint of honey. There is better volume if less refinement to the denser and vibrant medium weight flavors that flash focused power on the lightly stony, rich, delicious and zest-inflected finale. This too would benefit from developing better complexity so a few years of keeping should prove helpful. In BondSG$269.00 -

There is complexity on the nose, weight and concentration on the palate, along with great acidity, all combined with the ripeness of fruit and mineral notes on the finish. Just bottled but still showing beautifully. Manager Guillaume Michel notes that his Montée de Tonnerre is 100% from Chapelot. This is a south-facing, homogenous parcel from the bottom of Chapelot to the mid-level.In BondSG$540.00 -

(from Montmains proper). This is aromatically similar to the straight Chablis with the addition of pretty floral top notes. The finer, and not quite as fleshy, medium-bodied flavors exude more evident minerality on the nicely energetic flavors that deliver fine length on the balanced finale. This appealingly dry but not really austere effort could also use better depth so a few years of cellaring should be beneficial. In BondSG$305.00 -

From another court-noué-impacted parcel that produces relatively small yields—35 hectoliters per hectare, to be precise—the 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Séchets is exhibiting notes of white flowers, lemon peel and beeswax mingling with oyster shell. It is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and racy, with a long, pungently intense finish. Together with Butteaux Vieilles Vignes, it’s one of the highlights of Michel’s premiers crus.In BondSG$1,698.74 -

(from vines between 35 and 50 years of age evenly divided between parcels of Mélinots, Châtains and Roncières). A touch of reduction blurs the nuance of the markedly more floral-suffused nose that reveals additional notes of shellfish and just sliced citrus. The sleek, well-detailed and more refined middleweight flavors aren’t as powerful or rich yet I like the balance and overall sense of harmony. This understated effort is a Vaillons of finesse. In BondSG$315.00 -

The vines here are aged between 50-80 years, and are planted on deep brown clay soil, interspersed with pebbles. A lovely example of Grenouilles, fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks only with some lees contact. Precise, focused and already very expressive, direct acidity but lots of purity. Will be bottled in May 2024 after 18 months or more.In BondSG$599.00 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2022 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru comes from two parcels on the north-facing part of the climat, 60- and 70-year-old vines. It has a poised and focused bouquet with hints of white peach and praline infusing the minerally scents. Very composed and understated at first before gaining more intensity. The palate is well-balanced with tangy marmalade and quince, lovely depth and cohesion, equidistant between classicism and the generous, almost tropical nature of the 2022 vintage. Highly recommended. In BondSG$570.00 -

A pretty mid purple, soft and elegant on the nose. Fills the mouth very well, with a good point of acidity, while staying true to its name of Charmes. Good length here. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$243.00 -

The purchased grapes come from ancient vines in Mâcon-Lugny La Perrière. Made in 350 litre barrels and bottled in July. Pale lemon and lime. Quite a pure elegant nose, a little more personality. A crisp rather than a fleshy style, well made. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,687.25
