The 2018 Meursault Village opens in the glass with notes of crisp Anjou pear, white flowers, mandarin oil, bread dough and beeswax. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, it's lively and precise, with a delicate but tightly wound core and a bright, mineral finish. As usual, this cuvée derives from two lieux-dits: En l'Ormeau on the plain (which is also the source of Ente's Clos des Ambres and Sève du Clos bottlings) and Les Casse-Têtes on the hillside, the vines having been planted in 1952-1953 and 1998, respectively.

Vinous (88-90)

(12.2% alcohol with 4.4 grams of acidity; cropped at 28 hectoliters per hectare): Cool aromas of lime and spearmint. Then surprisingly dense and sappy in the mouth, with brisk lemon and lime fruit flavors accented by gingery spices. Quite dusty and tactile for such a low-octane wine: it's difficult to find this style outside of Burgundy. Finishes floral and persistent.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and textural, with an enveloping attack that segues into a deep, muscular core, concluding with a racy finish.

Burghound (92)

Outstanding. A slightly riper and notably spicier nose reveals liqueur-like notes of acacia, apple and lemon-lime. There is again excellent mid-palate density to the almost painfully intense medium-bodied flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract before concluding in a powerful and wonderfully long finale where a touch of bitter zest character appears. The straight Meursault is lovely but this offers just a bit more of everything.

Vinous (91-93)

(these vines, which Ente says are 120 years old, produced just 14 hectoliters per hectare in 2015): Very bright, pale yellow. Riesling-like reduction to the very pure aromas of pineapple and lemon oil. Rich and chewy in the mouth, with the wine's seamless yellow fruit flavors giving a sweet impression that's nicely countered by a flavor of dusty stone. Ente noted that the ancient vines that he replanted when he started here go into his basic Meursault cuvée. With its bulletproof fruit and underlying minerality, this is a wonderfully plush and complete Meursault in the making.

5 Star Wine. Pale lemon in colour. We know now what to expect from La Sève du Clos and the 2019 does indeed deliver a sensational bouquet, fully ripe, but beautifully nuanced and freshening up in the glass, to becomes more classic. Absolutely heart-stoppingly brilliant, with immense depth behind, fleshes out considerably, then wave after wave of balanced ripeness, returning to white stone fruit with just a little peachy top note. A wine to linger over indefinitely. Most definitely!

2014 was his first vintage of this wine. Vines were worked by his younger brother Benoît Ente. Tank sample. Bright citrus and spice that I thought might have been new oak (but isn’t) and the pure citrus fruit opens up to a bright light of intensity. Almost floral in its lifted scent, then more mineral and savoury on the palate. Super-complex and deep. Gentle in its creamy texture. Generous, rich, spicy and rounded yet still with a tight mouth-watering finish that pulls everything in like a belt. Amazing length.
