Vinous - Ian D'Agata (87-89)

Medium-deep ruby. Still quite closed nose slowly yields aromas of rhubarb, mint and dark plum, but conveys an impression of depth. More open on the palate, with a fleshy texture to the red cherry and spicy plum flavors. Finishes long and smooth, with a lingering note of black pepper and watermelon.

Wine Advocate (98)

A candidate for the -wine of the vintage,- the 2008 should have been purchased before it began to soar in value because of the significance of the number 8 in the Chinese culture (denoting good luck). Representing 40% of the production, this blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc offers aromas of high quality unsmoked cigar tobacco, lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, earth, cedar and asphalt. Full, rich and stunningly concentrated, I doubt it is inferior to the 2010, just more classic as well as slightly more forward and a degree weaker in alcoholic potency (12.5% versus 13.5%). The 2008 should be relatively drinkable in 6-10 years as it is already showing remarkable complexity and breed, and will last for 30-35 years...at the minimum.

Vinous - Neal Martin (96)

The 2008 Lafleur is a wine that I have tasted several times. It mirrored my previous encounters. There is still impressive fruit concentration on the nose, equally distributed between red and black, a hint of clove and just a touch of Italian delicatessen emanating from the Cabernet Franc. The palate has just melted a little since its obdurate infancy, although it is still quite linear and strict. You might argue that the 2008 Lafleur is a little charmless at the moment, but bottle age will sculpt and abrade this Pomerol into a very fine, if slightly aloof wine. (This was not shown at BI Wine & Spirit’s horizontal but a bottle was opened at a private dinner when I was in Bordeaux a few days earlier.)

The 2008 Latour has a more bold and concentrated bouquet compared to the Lafite-Rothschild, scents of blackberry, bilberry, iris, cigar humidor and cold wet stone that all surge from the glass. This is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with firm in tannin, a light marine influence infusing the black fruit, a little spice towards the finish with superb persistency. It is an authorative Latour as usual, one now beginning to enter its stride although naturally it will last for two or three decades with ease. (Tasted at BI Wine & Spirit’s annual 10-Year On tasting.)

A creamy nose promises a smooth opening, the scent of sweet-salt, hazelnutty crumble crust is mouth-watering. The palate is taut but tiny bubbles carry bright lemon zestiness to the tastebuds. It is this lemony serenity and clean-cut 2008 character that remains centre-stage throughout, with subtle autolysis in the background. Very elegant and lasting.

The 2008 Messorio is simply marvelous in this vintage. Layers of dark fruit take shape beautifully in the glass as this reticent Messorio shows off its pedigree. The 2008 is a decidedly inward wine that, once again, stands apart from some recent vintages. The 2008 is a mid-weight, refined Messorio endowed with tons of balance and sheer finesse. It will be a fascinating wine to follow in the coming years. The 2008 Messorio was aged for 14 months in the standard French oak barrique (75% new), a move away from the smaller barrels that had been used in past years.

(100% cabernet franc): Good full ruby-red. Knockout, extremely fragrantnose combines raspberry, strawberry, Oriental spices, bay leaf, violet and white pepper. Fine-grained, pure and penetrating on the palate, with outstanding density and great energy to the flavors of red berries, aromatic herbs and white pepper. The extremely long, perfumed,palate-staining finish features supple tannins that are in perfect harmony with the wine's fruit. Another great Paleo in the making: I love this wine's vibrant delivery of pure, unadulterated cabernet franc aromas and flavors. A great showing.

I don't remember a second wine of Mouton being so outstanding. This is really plummy and juicy on the nose with flowers and lots of everything. Full and velvety with a lovely texture. Long and very pretty. Plenty of chocolate and lightly toasted oak. Bright and exciting. Give it three or four years of bottle age.

Here the nose is notably tighter and more reserved with aromas of citrus blossom and zest, spice, smoke, fennel and hints of acacia that introduce big, muscular and wonderfully complex broad-scaled flavors that culminate in a long, focused and explosive finish of breathtaking length and intensity. This should reward at least a decade in the cellar and drink well for a similar period thereafter. This too is terrific and very Bâtard and like the Combettes, the '08 version is one of the very best young examples from Leflaive that I have ever seen.

Bright, deep red. Slightly reduced but already remarkably nuanced nose combines strawberry, raspberry, musky game, truffley underbrush and dried flowers. Silky and fat on entry, then builds on the back half, gaining in fullness, energy and power. Peppery, earthy spices add complexity to the savory, very long finish, which has the tannic clout to require 10 to 15 years of patience. Should be another in a growing collection of great Clos de la Roche bottlings from this domain.

Tondonia's reds have been on an upward curve recently and are now at the same level as the bodega's world-class whites. This is a fine, elegant, savoury, low-alcohol blend of Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha and 5% each of Mazuelo and Graciano, combining summer berry fruit, racy acidity, granular tannins and an earthy, balsamic undertone. Vinous (93)

Medium-deep red. Gorgeous floral nose and palate offer raspberry, rose petal, spices and minerals. Sappy, dense and deep, with terrific concentration and thrust to its tight kernel of fruit. Finishes with compelling energy and length, and an impression of weightlessness. A beauty.
