    Wine Advocate (99)

The 2002 Brut Grand Cru Millésime is spectacular today, soaring from the glass with a complex bouquet of smoky pear, lemon, mandarin orange and peach mingled with smoke, praline, crushed mint and hints of wet chalk. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's deep and strikingly complete, with a textural attack that segues into a concentrated core framed by a vibrant spine of acidity and buttressed by chalky extract. • Feudi di San Gregorio Patrimo 2002 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (90)

One of the many very successful 100% merlot wines made in Italy today, this wine created an unbelievable stink a few years ago when it won a major award, and then someone pointed out that it couldn't legally have been made in that part of Campania as merlot wasn't an allowed grape variety there. All the controversy has since cleared up, leaving us with a monumental merlot that is held in high esteem everywhere. Almost black in color. Redolent of licorice, coffee liqueur, dark chocolate, overripe plum and red and bing cherry jam. Supple and silky enough to be enjoyable already; shows dark chocolate and roasted coffee bean notes as well as an attractive smokiness. Finishes extremely long, with massive tannins. A bit more finesse would only add to the pleasure of the experience.

  • Henri Giraud Argonne Brut Grand Cru 2002 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The first word that comes to mind in tasting Giraud’s 2002 Brut Argonne – which, as its name suggests, was initially raised in new Argonne oak barrels – is “sumptuous.” I cannot recall having previously tasted such an envelopingly and almost thickly rich Champagne. The selection of Ay Pinot Noir chosen here is more than capable of subsuming any overt influence that new oak might otherwise have bestowed on it. Lightly baked apple, quince, and marzipan inform the nose and silken, expansive, plush palate, accompanied by subtly resinous and smoky black tea. The combination of breadth, textural allure, and fine yet intensely active mousse is spine-tinglingly impressive, striking its balance between vinosity and effervescence at a remarkable high energy level. Hints of salt and iodine add interest, local color, and saliva-inducement to a powerful finishing wave of fruit and nut essences. I suspect one will be rewarded for following this 8-10 years down the pike; though I confess to lack of directly relevant experience.

  • Jacques Frederic Mugnier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2002 (1x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)

Good medium red. Complex, pure nose combines black raspberry, blackberry, herbs, mocha, licorice and rose petal. Very tightly wound today, even a bit lean, and hiding more than itÂ’s showing. Highly perfumed flavors of blackberry, licorice and fresh herbs. Finishes with very firm tannins and excellent length. Less sweet than the Chambolle samples, yet harmonious from the outset. I may be underrating this. Half of these vines were replanted in 1987, as Mugnier replaced a large-berried, thin-skinned clone that was particularly sensitive to rot.

  • Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (98+)

Krug's beautifully citrus colored 2002 Blanc de Blancs Brut Clos du Mesnil (ID 415068 - disgorged IV/2015) shows a deep, complex, very clear and precise if not etherial bouquet with citrus aromas intertwined with chalk and noble brioche notes in the background. Pure, profound and vibrantly fresh on the palate, this is a straight, athletic, very intense and expressive yet highly elegant and finessed Clos du Mesnil with a unique fresh fruit character! The 2002 reveals a great mineral structure and chalky texture on the palate. The highly complex, energetic finish reveals bracing freshness and vitality as well as the charm and creaminess from the vinification in barrels and possibly the dosage wine that seems to boost the Krug style. While terroir wine is the result of hands-off winemaking, Krug's Clos du Mesnil is perhaps a very particular Krug Champagne—it has great quality, style and complexity that is the result of the winemaking and the addition of the dosage wine. How the Clos du Mesnil would taste if farmed biodynamically, picked later and dosed with nothing but itself is a pointless question, but it hasn't left my mind since I tasted the paradoxical 2002, which is terribly fresh on one hand and also has this unique Krug reserve style. Notabene: This doesn't include the hypothesis that the wine could be any better. It would just be different and surely less Krug, which is not what we really want, do we? Tasted April 2018.

  • Jacques Frederic Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru 2002 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

Medium red. Immediately spectacular aromas of raspberry, baked bread and white truffle. Silky, thick and highly concentrated; densely packed, sappy and wonderfully sweet but seemed to go into a shell after five minutes in the glass. Finishes with a savory note of olive, almost invisible tannins and explosive length. A great showing today, although I can easily imagine this wine continuing to gain in aromatic precision and lift for another ten years.

  • Jean Francois Ganevat Cotes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Pere 2002 (1x75cl)

The Jean Francois Ganevat Cotes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Pere 2002 is a distinctively captivating wine, crafted with imagination and verisimilitude in the revered region of Cotes du Jura, France. This wine emanates from the vineyard of legendary producer, Jean Francois Ganevat. Noted globally for his commitment to biodynamic principles and low-intervention methods in winemaking, Ganevat meticulously hand-harvests Savagnin grapes, allowing them to mature for several years in oak barrels, and without topping. The result of this time-honoured process is an extraordinary wine, delectably rich and complex. Its bouquet of orchard fruits, citrus, honey and almonds is entrancing, whilst the palate reveals delightful nuances of vibrant acidity and profound minerality. The Jean Francois Ganevat Cotes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Pere 2002 truly embodies a fine wine experience that transcends the classic Chardonnay encounter.

  • Joseph Drouhin Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2002 (6x75cl)
  • Krug 2002 (1x150cl)

    James Suckling (100)

The much-anticipated 2002 has impeccable detail and depth with a lot of chalky, stony and flinty elements on the nose as well as a very fresh edge. The nose is very complex and wound up tight but presents itself as very integrated and compressed. There are aromas of lemon rind, lime juice and a lime custard all at once, complemented in turn by a super-restrained hazelnut-like edge. Undertones of brown mushrooms, chalky minerals and lemon leaf. The palate has a core of sizzlingly intense, concentrated chardonnay framed whitin a powerful phenolic structure that will underpin the future of this Champagne. Flawlessly fresh and as perfect as it gets. Give this time as it needs to settle: best from 2020 and then for another decade beyond.

  • Krug Clos d'Ambonnay Blanc de Noirs 2002 (1x75cl)

    Decanter (100)

The bouquet has a magnificent classicism to it, comprising notes of yellow fruits, spices including white pepper, flowers and a mineral edge. With aeration, scents of menthol emerge from the glass. The palate is upright in character, but elegant and crystalline, with a long, structured finish of chalky density. A Champagne having both thrust, tension and aerial lightness in which finesse and power are allies. A masterpiece. Krug Chef de Cave Julie Cavil said 2002 was 'the last classic year in Champagne, one without extreme elements and with optimal ripeness obtained step by step'.100% Pinot Noir from 0.68ha located in the village of Ambonnay. Dosage: 4g/l.

Good deep ruby-red. Currant, roasted plum and oak notes of chocolate and coconut on the nose. Then bright, pure and atypically powerful, with penetrating berry and mineral flavors. This densely packed wine was still in barrel and had not yet been fined. Builds impressively on the finish, showing rather fine-grained tannins and lingering fruit and mineral nuances.

Pale yellow. Pure aromas of apricot, orange and spices, with a tangy hint of marmalade. Generous and moderately thick, with lively, fruit-driven flavors of orange, lemon and apricot nicely framed by bright acids. Very silky and suave, in the style of the vintage's best examples. Slowly mounting, very fine finish.
