Wine Advocate (94-96)According to Marcel Bonneau on this visit, all of the 2012 wine will be bottled as Reserve des Celestins. Tasted from barrel, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins flirts with that fine line between deep, chocolaty richness and raisiny over-ripeness. This is full-bodied and powerful but silky at the same time. If it's bottled soon, it should be amazing. |

Wine Advocate (95+)Il Poggione is a Brunello superstar and a vintage like this reveals every reason why that affirmation is true. From the second the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino pours into the glass, you know you are in for something special. The wine is darkly saturated and rich in appearance. Absent are those slightly amber or browning hues you often get with Sangiovese in a hot vintage. Nor does the wine show flat or tired characteristics. Instead, the quality of fruit is vibrant and rich. This is a healthy, generous and exuberant Brunello with dark density and succulent fruit flavors that are followed by integrated spice and tobacco. The balance is impressive and one thing you get here is fresh acidity. This is not to be underestimated, because the acidity quota in the 2012 vintage across the appellation is not as high or evident as usual. This is one of the year's best Brunellos. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (89)The 2012 Cuvée Jean Gautreau is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc picked between September 28 and October 15. It has more definition and vivacity than the 2011, offering black fruit, tobacco and graphite notes; the Cabernet is clearly in the driver’s seat while Merlot gives directions. The ripe palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is perhaps the most modern in style of all the Cuvée Jean Gautreaus that I have tasted, yet there is panache here, and it feels long and tender in the mouth. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet. |

Wine Advocate (96)Up in the top handful of wines in the vintage (which should come as no surprise to anyone who follows this estate), the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, rich and layered Châteauneuf that doesn’t put a foot wrong. Made from 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and the rest Syrah, it offers blockbuster notes of blackberry, liquid-violets, spice and serious minerality to go with awesome mid-palate depth and layers of sweet tannin. Like the Cuvee Chaupin, it will be better in another handful of years and thrill through 2027. |

While long and gently structured still, there’s a finesse here that keeps me looking back to the glass for more, as the 2012 leaves the mouth watering with a tart cherry pit twang. Production was down around 30% in 2012, with a strict selection in the vineyards and a much earlier harvest that ended around September 15th. While drinking this today is certainly an option, there are still many years of evolution in store. |

Vinous (91)Inky ruby. Deeply pitched black and blue fruit aromas display very good clarity, picking up notes of star anise and smoky minerals with air. Supple and creamy on the palate, with intense blueberry and floral pastille flavors given lift by juicy acidity. Clings with strong tenacity on the smoothly tannic finish. |
