The fruit profile is typically darker than the Lacoste but it is still vibrant, fresh and wonderfully concentrated. The palate is beautifully linear and balanced with excellent focus, mineral grain and a bit of muscle. 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot. The highest alcohol levels ever at 14% but you’d never know it and it’s still not a patch on some of the big bruisers this year. The 2018 Pinot Noir Far Coast Vineyard comes from a site not far from the Pacific Ocean, in the Sonoma Coast AVA, and it's one of the bigger, richer wines in the lineup in 2018. Deeper ruby-hued, with a stunning nose of ripe mulberries, Bing cherries, candied strawberries, spring flowers, and orange blossom, this is a spicy, medium to full-bodied, impressively concentrated Pinot Noir. Despite being from a cooler vineyard, it brings plenty of richness and sexy fruit, with a certain exotic character. I've always loved this cuvée (although I've always thought the Chardonnay was slightly more successful), but this might be the finest vintage I've tasted to date. Count me impressed. Deep garnet-purple in color, the wine needs a lot of swirling before it begins to release a whole complex melody of notes, one at a time to begin: tilled earth, followed by pronounced licorice, then crushed rocks, then the preserved plums. Eventually, it all comes together into a fascinating crescendo of intense crème de cassis, rose oil, wild blueberries and kirsch notes, giving way to quiet, persistent leitmotif scents of cinnamon stick, truffles and redcurrant jelly. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers all this and more, revealing tightly wound black fruit, red berry and exotic spice layers within a solid, wonderfully plush frame and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length and loads of earth and mineral sparks. This is a profound, highly intellectual, multilayered baby, which will require a good 7-8 years to begin to sing its incredible song, then should cellar a further 40 years at least. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with fleshy red berry fruit and a touch of white pepper and clove, dovetailing into a piquant, lively finish. The 2019 Hosanna is fabulous, just as it was from barrel. Inky, rich and explosive, the 2019 possesses off the charts fruit intensity. As always Hosanna leans towards the dark side of black/blue fruit. An exotic mélange of tar, gravel, licorice, incense and spice builds in the glass, filling out the layers effortlessly. Marc Kent's field blend from vineyards over 50 years old comprising Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca and Rufete, aged 16 months in used French barriques. Deep purplish crimson. Pretty ripe and luscious on both nose and palate with smoother tannins than many Douro reds – there is still some tannin but it's very ripe. Lots of work involved in this feat? Yet it definitely tastes of the hot stones of the Douro. Well done! Really rather gorgeous already. Clean, fresh, appetising finish.
