The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a vivid bouquet with red cherries, cranberry and violet scents, actually, quite Vosne-like in personality. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, quite poised and tense with a dash of spice on the finish. This is a delicious Chambolle that should give 12-15 years' drinking pleasure.

(Sweet spot Outstanding) Here the wood is no longer subtle though neither is it invasive on the ripe and layered aromas of violet, plum, earth and discreet sauvage nuances. The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes has turned out even better than I anticipated, unfurling in the glass with a magical bouquet of cassis, plums and blackberries mingled with dark chocolate, spices, sweet soil tones, licorice and black truffle. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's extraordinarily sumptuous and concentrated, framed by velvety tannins that caress the palate, and underpinned by lively acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish. • La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94+)

La Spinetta's 2014 Barbaresco Vigneto Valeirano is a dark, brooding wine. Because of its depth and overall structure, the oak element is less evident here than it is in some of the other wines. Smoke, licorice, tar, spice, black cherry and rose petal gradually emerge from a wall of firm, imposing tannins. Readers will have to be patient with the 2014, but it is a striking wine in the making. As is often the case, the Valeirano has a distinctive element of austerity and nerve.

So close to Bonnes Mares but so different. This is always refined, says Véronique Drouhin. Estate vines organically farmed. Picked 8 September. 40% whole bunch. Usually 7–8 barrels. Cask sample. Mid crimson. Seductively, delicately scented. Red fruits, not overly sweet-smelling, and a delicate dusty/mineral note. Refined, slim, harmonious and fresh. The length is amazing. Mouth-watering, pure and all tongue-tied on the palate but ready for a long life.

  • Joseph Drouhin Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 2020 (6x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)

Full pale lemon. The bouquet is attractive with an intriguing note of liquorice. Quite full on the nose, with a little warmth as well as body, then brought back in to a beautiful finish. Good acidity. A little tension behind, needs time. A wine currently showing in two halves, but which may very well develop positively from here. A conservative score for now. Tasted: November 2021

  • Joseph Drouhin Meursault 2018 (6x75cl)

    Jancis Robinson (16)

Fermented in oak, 18–20% new, as for most village whites. Cask sample. Intense fruit aroma with notes of clementine and ripe lemons and a light touch of spice. Ripe and spicy. Super-creamy, with some almond and quite obvious oak on the palate – obvious at the moment but there’s freshness underneath. Not very subtle but lots of pleasure. Plenty of volume in the mouth, quite a powerful wine.

  • Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanee 2018 (6x75cl)

    Jancis Robinson (17)

Cask sample. Mid cherry red. Stunning red-fruited perfume here. Floral and fruity in the extreme. Fine and finely chewy tannins, scented on the palate, with the dry character that it is hard to get in combination with this scentedness outside of the Côte d’Or. Pure, pretty but with depth as well. Long and moreish with the freshness to balance.

  • Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvee de Tres VV 2014 (12x75cl)

    Jancis Robinson (18)

Sweet, spicy nose. Very intense. Great polished tannins. Super-serious and bone dry. Tastes like essence of a wood-panelled room, somehow. (And I don’t mean wood panelling with TCA as in Middle Temple.) Very much for the patient.

  • Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvee de Tres VV 2015 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes is fabulous, blossoming in the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berry fruit, cassis, coniferous forest floor, incense, rose petal and wood smoke. On the palate, the wine is multidimensional, expansive and full-bodied, with fabulous concentration and depth and wonderful sappy energy, its ripe tannins cloaked in layer after layer of fruit. A beautiful Charmes-Chambertin, from some of the oldest vines in Burgundy.

  • Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvee de Tres VV 2017 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes has turned out even better than I anticipated, unfurling in the glass with a magical bouquet of cassis, plums and blackberries mingled with dark chocolate, spices, sweet soil tones, licorice and black truffle. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's extraordinarily sumptuous and concentrated, framed by velvety tannins that caress the palate, and underpinned by lively acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish. Pierre-Jean Roty compares it to the 2012 and 2009 renditions, which readers who follow this domaine will know is high praise indeed.

  • L'Arlot Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2020 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (95-97)

The 2020 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is beautiful on the nose with harmonious, very pure dark cherries, violet and peony, blackcurrants and touches of rosemary. You could just inhale this all day. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, fine acidity, taut and fresh with just the right amount of spice towards the finish. So much energy here, this will be difficult to resist in its youth.

Fine deep crimson colour, the thicker style of a Morey-side Chambolle, both on the nose and the palate. Quite firm tannins, a fair acidity and a mixed dark fruit which returns behind. Sound, though some other wines offer more joy. Tasted: November 2021

  • Louis Jadot (Gagey) Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

Medium red. Cool, subtly herbal scents of raspberry, licorice, black pepper and leather, plus a hint of medicinal menthol. Supple, spicy and fine-grained, conveying a subtle sweetness to its raspberry and spice flavors. Opens nicely to fill the mouth, but without leaving any impression of heaviness. Delivers lovely perfumed lift--and darker fruits than it showed a year ago in the barrel. Finishes fresh, classically dry and persistent, with a fine dusting of tannins. Not particularly backward in the context of this collection.

  • Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Celebration 2018 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92+)

Opening in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries and plums framed by a deft application of toasty new oak, the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Célébration (Maison Louis Jadot) is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit structured around rich tannins and succulent acids. It's a hearty, generous wine that should evolve nicely in the cellar. As usual, it's a blend of more than a dozen Beaune premiers crus.
