Produced only during the best years, it’s made from 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, the grapes coming from 45 of the finest lieux-dits in the region. 2013 was a late bloomer, with flowering only taking place in July after a cool spring. The summer was ideal with long periods of dry and warm weather. One third of the wine is aged in oak and there’s no malolactic fermentation. Vincenzo Arnese: Packed with elegant yet powerful aromas of ripe orchard trees that merge with brioche and dry cookies. Concluding with an intensely sapid finish, the 2013 isn't as overtly structured as the muscular, tightly wound 2012: rather, it's the 2013's alliance of cut and flesh, precision and charm that's so compelling this year. This is another banner vintage for what I consider the reigning champion of the region's tête de cuvée bottlings, and it will be worth an effort to acquire. |

Wine Advocate (94+)No 2013 or 2014 was produced of the old-vine selection, so I tasted the 2015 Propiedad, a pure Garnacha since 2010. But, as it's selected from old vines in five plots in different parajes—Valtomelloso, Valviejo, Las Mulgas and Corral de Serrano—it always has a small percentage of other traditional grape varieties. The vines range from 30 to 90 years old, and like the rest, they are organically farmed. The destemmed and crushed grapes fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and pigéage. It underwent malolactic in barrique and then matured in larger oak casks for 18 months. Again, there is a difference in precision, brightness and depth from la Montesa to this Propiedad. This is, in Palacios's mind, an old-vine cuvée from Alfaro. The palate combines juicy fruit with earthy tones, very fine tannins and balsamic, Mediterranean herbs and a tasty, almost salty finish. Transparent, subtle and delicious, with some hints of the wines from yesteryear. For Palacios, this should be the typical wine from Alfaro—and a very good one at that! 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2017. There will be no Propiedad in 2016; it's only produced in some vintages. |

The citrus & apple fruits are rich, long and as generous as the nose of the wine indicates they might be whilst this finishes with a moreish spray of chalky minerality at the last. A truly excellent Champagne with a promising future ahead. |

Displaying a strong, solid bead at the core of a pale-straw colour in the glass, it is immediately obvious that this is a cut above standard NV Champagne. The nose is at once powerful with ripe Granny Smith apples and seductive jasmine, tempered and restrained by pithier notes of grapefruit alongside an intriguing hint of chopped walnut. There is also a wonderfully generous depth of red currant fruit towards the back of the aromatic profile, conveying its predominance of Pinot Noir. The palate demonstrates its immediate quality once again with a very serious texture to the mousse which simply cannot be imitated, as well as a slightly prickly bead keeping the tongue alert to an attack of crisp apple and kiwi skin, moving into a gently sweet mid-palate before rounding off with a lick of oyster shell minerality. The skillful blending of Reserve Perpetuelle is a timely reminder that this is an art in which the Champenois have few rivals. The tension between rounded well-judged ripeness and austere, pitch-perfect acidity is something to behold, especially when we are used to paying significantly more to experience it. If Pinot is the guts and glory of this wine, Chardonnay is definitely the supporting arches, book-ending proceedings.

The citrus & apple fruits are rich, long and as generous as the nose of the wine indicates they might be whilst this finishes with a moreish spray of chalky minerality at the last. Displaying a strong, solid bead at the core of a pale-straw colour in the glass, it is immediately obvious that this is a cut above standard NV Champagne. The nose is at once powerful with ripe Granny Smith apples and seductive jasmine, tempered and restrained by pithier notes of grapefruit alongside an intriguing hint of chopped walnut. There is also a wonderfully generous depth of red currant fruit towards the back of the aromatic profile, conveying its predominance of Pinot Noir. The palate demonstrates its immediate quality once again with a very serious texture to the mousse which simply cannot be imitated, as well as a slightly prickly bead keeping the tongue alert to an attack of crisp apple and kiwi skin, moving into a gently sweet mid-palate before rounding off with a lick of oyster shell minerality. The skillful blending of Reserve Perpetuelle is a timely reminder that this is an art in which the Champenois have few rivals. The tension between rounded well-judged ripeness and austere, pitch-perfect acidity is something to behold, especially when we are used to paying significantly more to experience it. If Pinot is the guts and glory of this wine, Chardonnay is definitely the supporting arches, book-ending proceedings.
