The Fifty Finest Wines 2020 I tasted a large number of Californian wines this autumn and I found many of the wines (whites and reds) over-oaked, sweet, far too high in alcohol and generally out of balance. So, when successful wines put their hands up it was very encouraging. This amazing Cabernet had the very traits I associate with exceptionally expensive Californian red wines and yet, when I discovered its price, I couldn’t believe it. I far prefer this cuvée to the ‘Reserve’, which is £55. The key to this wine’s success is its balance. Every element is in perfect harmony. The fruit is pure and resonant, the tannins are classy and there is no weird-tasting oak whatsoever. Profound balance + a delicious flavour = a mention in the Finest FiftyInc. GSTSG$875.10 -
The Duckhorn Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 exhibits the pedigree of Napa Valley’s acclaimed wine terroirs. This sophisticated vintage, crafted by esteemed wine producer Duckhorn Vineyards, reflects their longstanding reputation for deftly blending premier dichotomous characteristics. Developed predominantly in a blend of French and American oak, the wine demonstrates an intriguing juxtaposition of robust intensity and delicate nuance. Enticing aromas of mulberry, blackberry and cassis harmonise with subtle undertones of savoury spice and dark cocoa. On the palate, beautifully balanced wine exhibits fine-grained tannins and remarkable structure, escalating into a prodigious, yet velvety finish. This exclusive vintage indeed echoes Duckhorn's unswerving devotion to crafting richly textured, sophisticated wines that embody the unique spirit of Napa Valley. The Duckhorn Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 transcends mere wine, offering a testament to time, tradition, and the ceaseless pursuit of quality.

The 2016 Belle Cousine is another absolutely gorgeous wine in this range from Hyde De Villaine. Ripe plum, mocha, new leather, spice, menthol and grilled herbs infuse the 2016 with striking complexity. Despite its considerable appeal, the 2016 is potent and massively tannic. Time in the glass gives a good idea of what will develop in time; readers should plan on being patient. The Belle Cousine is very clearly a special wine in the making.Inc. GSTSG$1,922.81 -

The 2019 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard comes from vines located just one ridge in from the Pacific Ocean and planted in 1995 at 1,200 to 1,500 feet in elevation, Medium ruby in color, it's scented of blood orange, cranberry and rhubarb, with nuances of turned earth, conifer, seaweed and mushrooms. The palate is medium-bodied with an abundance of silty tannins, appealing bursts of acidity, nuanced yet concentrated fruits and a long finish. It deserves at least another 2-3 years in bottle. 318 cases were made.Inc. GSTSG$2,460.13 -

Dried-floral nose, accented by notes of black cherries and a hint of lime leaf. Medium-bodied with tight tannins. Lots of freshness and brightness on the palate. There is depth and complexity, but it’s all in harmony. Paprika and allspice come through. Such a delightful wine, bridging intensity with freshness. Drink or hold.Inc. GSTSG$2,460.99 -

The 2016 Chardonnay is fabulous. A vivid, textured wine, the 2016 possesses remarkable finesse and intensity in all of its dimensions. Lemon oil and white flowers are amped up by the natural intensity of these old vines. The 2016 was fermented and aged in neutral oak, with no malolactic fermentation. Mayacamas is setting a new standard for what California Chardonnay can be. Don't miss it.Inc. GSTSG$1,252.28 -

The 2020 Syrah North Coast is an absolute delight. It offers up a whole range of floral and savory notes intermingled with red/purplish berry fruit. Fresh and vibrant, the North Coast Syrah is another gorgeous entry-level wine in this range. The North Coast Syrah is a blend taken from various sites, and is made with 100% whole clusters. Aging is done in concrete and neutral oak.Inc. GSTSG$707.41 -

The 2019 Syrah Sonoma Hillsides is once again the star of this range from Pax Mahle. Rich and exotic, with notable depth, the Hillsides is quite a bit brighter than the other Syrahs in the portfolio. Red cherry, plum, pomegranate, mocha, spice, leather and tobacco abound. The whole clusters are present, but nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. As always, the Hillsides is a blend taken from several sites, done with 100% whole clusters and aged in concrete. Every time I taste the Hillsides, I think the same thing: why doesn't Pax Mahle treat all his Syrahs this way?Inc. GSTSG$888.35 -

The 2016 Lytton Springs is a powerful, dense wine. Black cherry, plum, lavender, new leather, cloves, licorice and menthol flesh out. Deep, plush and richly textured, the 2016 Lytton Springs packs a real punch. The 23% Petite Sirah is felt in the wine's darkness and overall gravitas. There is more than enough richness and structure to support many years of fine drinking. What a gorgeous wine this is.Inc. GSTSG$1,203.19
